Having an infant with congenital heart disease (CHD) may cause difficul-ties and changes in mothers’ life. This study was aim to explore the experiences and needs of Turkish mothers of infants with CHD. The study was carried out with the descriptive phenomenological method from qualitative research. The study sample included 18 mothers having infants in the age range of 0 to 2 years with CHD. The data were collected using a sociodemographic data form and a semi-structured interview form. The data obtained from the interviews were evaluated using the content and thematic analysis methods. Four main themes and sub- themes emerged from the qualitative data. “Effect of getting a diagnosis” with two sub-themes (emotional changes and a protective mother-infant relationship), “All emotions in one” with two sub-themes (fearing of death and torn between fear and hope), “Influences on a mother’s life” with three sub-themes (forgetting herself, getting away from siblings’ lives and relations with spouse), and stressors with three sub-themes (loss of control, physical care and unfulfilled needs). The results of the study provide insight into how Turkish mothers subjectively experience life after CHD. Mothers expected healthcare professionals to support and understand their experiences and needs. Healthcare profes-sionals need to create an environment for mothers to cope with emo-tional difficulties, gain knowledge and care skills, and adapt to their lives.

Discrimination of glutopeak test and mixograph parameters for evaluation of wheat flour supplemented with hazelnut skin, cross-linked starch, and oxidized starch

Hazelnut skin is a by-product produced from hazelnut processing. It can be used as a
nutritional supplement due to its high nutrient values. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the
dough properties of refined flour (RF) with the addition of hazelnut skin (HS), cross-linked starch
(CS), and oxidized starch (OS). Principal component analysis showed a positive correlation between
maximum torque, torque after maximum, and aggregation energy. Usage of 10% HS significantly
(p < 0.05) decreased the mixograph MID line peak value indicating a weaker dough. Random
forest (RFT) was conducted to classify the samples and to determine the importance levels of the
analysis parameters. According to the results, AE and mixograph MID line peak values were the
most discriminant parameters to distinguish the samples into groups. High-level HS alone caused
undesirable effects on the dough quality, yet the addition of modified starches could be used to
compensate for the undesirable effects. When used together, the interaction between hazelnut skin
and modified starches should be considered. Glutopeak provides a means for assessing the impacts
of additives such as hazelnut skin or modified starches on flour functionality.

Useful indicators and models for assessing erosion control ecosystem service in a semi-arid forest landscape
Vatandaşlar, Can; Yavuz, Mehmet
Forests provide a large array of ecosystem
services (ESs) such as wood supply, extreme natural
event prevention, and ecotourism opportunities. The
quantitative characterization of ESs is a crucial but
costly task for environmental managers. The aim of
this study was to develop easily applicable models
and indicators for assessing erosion control ES in a
semi-arid landscape. In order to accomplish this, 107
randomly selected plots were visited for field measurements
and topsoil sampling. Several parametric
tests were then used to analyze the field data. The
findings revealed that (i) normalized difference vegetation
index (NDVI), (ii) cover management (C)
factor of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation
(RUSLE), (iii) soil organic matter content, (iv) canopy
cover ratio, and (v) land use/land cover (LULC)
types could be used as useful performance indicators
of erosion control ES. Two regression models were
developed based on these indicators and compared
to RUSLE results for the study area. Using the first
model, we were able to estimate the soil protection
performance of different LULC types by NDVI at the
pixel level (R2
adj = 0.90, p < 0.05). The second model
estimated annual potential soil loss using NDVI and
ground slope values (R2
adj = 0.57, p < 0.05). Based
on the ES indicators framework, a practical approach
was proposed in this study for rapid assessment of
the soil erosion problem without running RUSLE.
Thus, environmental managers are expected to make
well-informed landscape planning decisions and
improve their ES provision application capabilities at
a reduced cost.
