For about 200 years, the impact of the West has been one of the most important factor on modernization of Turkey and shaping of its domestic and foreign policy. As Westernization policy was considered to be the only way to save the state during the last period of the Ottoman Empire, the impact of the West remained a dominant factor both in the building of the nation and in fundamental processes such as secularization and democratization during the Republic period; thus, Turkey took more concrete steps towards Westernization. At the same time, Turkish nationalism was always one of the cornerstones of Turkish policy in terms of Turkish modernization/Westernization, which one might advocate was a democratization process. This paper examines the politicization process of Turkish nationalism and the Western/Westernization perception during this process. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the approach of the Nationalist Movement Party, which is the biggest political representative of Turkish nationalism in TGNA in terms of the European Union-Turkey relations in recent history.
