Katiller üç sene gibi uzun bir sürenin ardından Mayıs 1879’da tutuklanmış ve yargılama sonunda 23 Mayıs 1880’de sekiz ile on beş yıl arasında değişen sürelerle ağır işlerde çalıştırılmak cezasına çarptırılmışlardır. Olay, Ermeniler tarafından Türk diplomatlara karşı işlenmiş ilk cinayet olma özelliği taşımaktadır.
