Age, gender, genetics, diet, smoking, and medications all play a role in the development of the disease. The most common symptoms are severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, and fatigue. Imaging studies, endoscopy and biopsy are used to diagnose the disease. Treatment includes the use of 5-aminosalicylic acid, corticosteroids, antibiotics, and immunomodulatory drugs. Patient education is critical in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.
