    Assessing the risk and effect of climate change with two-layer fuzzy logic-SWARA: A comparative practice in Turkiye

    Many factors such as population growth, development of industry/technology, and increase in production-consumption disrupt the ecological balance and cause climate change, which is a global problem. Determining the criteria that cause climate change is very important in finding effective solutions to the problem. In the study, the criteria were determined, weighted with a new method, Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA), and ranked according to their priorities with two-layer fuzzy logic model. The Fuzzy SWARA method allows the evaluation process, which becomes complicated due to the difficulties and factors experienced in decision-making, to be carried out more effectively and realistically. The risk and effect of climate change in Turkiye were evaluated regionally. However, the developed model also has a wide application area. Research findings revealed that the highest risk/effect of climate change have the Marmara and Central Anatolia regions. The lowest risk region is the Eastern Anatolia. Air pollution, population growth and deforestation have the highest weights. Important suggestions have presented especially for priority criteria. In this way, the factors that should be prioritized in climate change environmental problem solutions have been revealed and will make it easier for researchers and managers to provide more effective management.

    Comprehensive evaluation of hazardous solid waste treatment and disposal technologies by a new integrated AHP&MARCOS approach

    Hazardous waste management (HWM) deals with processing waste materials, and improper handling of this procedure might considerably harm human health and environment. It is crucial to employ the most appropriate treatment and disposal techniques while handling with waste materials as part of hazardous waste management so that potential problems can be minimized accordingly. Therefore, the weights of the criteria playing vital roles in solid waste management were determined by using AHP&MARCOS method, which is an integrated MCDM technique, and the most appropriate techniques to be employed in solid waste treatment and disposal were selected. The implementation took place in three phases; the first phase included brainstorming and literature review and the determination of the important criteria in the waste management (4 main and 12 sub-criteria) as well as the treatment (3) and disposal (7) methods to be employed; i.e, the alternatives. In addition, a decision-making group of 15 people was formed so that they could share their opinions based on their knowledge and experiences via the decision matrices while evaluating the alternatives according to the predetermined criteria. In the second phase, the decision matrices constructed based on the expert opinions were taken into consideration while determining weights/priorities of waste management criteria by employing AHP method. In the third phase, treatment and disposal methods were listed by using the decision matrices filled according to expert opinions, the weight values and the criteria. The criteria weights obtained by using AHP method revealed that "operation cost"was the criteria with the highest weight of importance while determining solid waste treatment/disposal methods. Similarly, among the obtained alternatives, the best solid waste treatment technique was found to be "physical treatment"and the best solid disposal technique "plasma arc". The present study is different from similar studies in the literature since the selection of treatment and disposal method was performed separately for all hazardous solid wastes (healthcare waste, municipality solid waste, etc.) for the first time. Moreover, the obtained results were evaluated by undertaking comprehensive analyses (sensitivity and comparison). The findings obtained in the present study are expected to make valuable contributions to the literature.

    Measuring zero waste consciousness: Development and psychometric properties of a multidimensional scale

    Escalating waste generation and resource depletion necessitate zero waste (ZW) approaches rooted in circular economy (CE) and sustainability. Successfully implementing these requires measuring individual ZW consciousness, yet valid, multidimensional scales are limited. This study addresses this gap by developing and validating the Zero Waste Consciousness Scale (ZWCS). The systematic process involved: (1) item pool creation from literature; (2) expert content validation (N = 6); (3) data collection from two distinct samples (pilot N = 462, validation N = 500) using a 5-point Likert scale and (4) exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for psychometric evaluation. EFA revealed a novel six-factor structure (‘Motivation and Awareness’, ‘Existing Infrastructure’, ‘Knowledge’, ‘Behaviour’, ‘Intention’, ‘Practice’) with 34 items, explaining 64.75% of total variance. CFA confirmed good model fit (χ²/df = 3.00, RMSEA = 0.07, CFI/TLI/IFI = 0.90). Reliability analyses showed high internal consistency. The ZWCS is a psychometrically sound, valid and reliable multidimensional instrument, filling a distinct gap for measuring ZW consciousness. This novel tool offers potential for research, evaluation and policy-making related to ZW, CE and sustainability.

    Renewable energy production in Artvin Çoruh University ANG Botanical Garden: Potential, application and challenges

    This study evaluates the capability of renewable energy sources (wind, solar and biomass) to meet the energy needs of Artvin Coruh University Ali Nihat Gokyigit Botanical Garden. As a result of the study, it has been determined that the wind speed in the region is insufficient for electricity generation from wind energy, as 0.0845 kW/h. In the analyses performed on the PVsol environment for the potential of a PV system, it has been concluded that 256.9 MWh of energy could be generated annually. The economic analyses resulted in the payback period of the PV system being calculated as 8.8 years. It was also suggested that the annual average of 3500-5000 kg of pruning waste could be utilised by elemental analysis and incineration or used for biogas production by anaerobic digestion together with food waste (27 tonnes/year). The study aims to raise awareness for on-site energy production by using local resources and thus reducing energy costs.

It has many advantages as well as some disadvantages. Commonly used fossil, hydraulic, wind and solar energy systems likewise have both advantages and disadvantages. The emission of nuclear radiation is the most important risk. If there is no radiation emission, it will cause a less bad impact even if an accident happens. Also, waste management will be easier. With the development of technology, the production of new generation reactors can ensure that some disadvantages are eliminated or minimized. When looking at the studies carried out in WOS, studies on nuclear energy are related to environmental issues (waste management and occupational health). However, more studies should be carried out on two problems (waste management and occupational health) that are important in the operation of nuclear power plants.
