Artvin yöresi doğu ladini (Picea orientalis (L.) Link.) ormanlarının ips typographus (L.) saldırısına maruz kalmasında ağaçların fizyolojik durumu, yetişme ortamı ve meşcere silvikültürel özelliklerinin etkisi
([y.y.], 2008) Sarıyıldız, Temel; Akkuzu, Erol; Tilki, Fahrettin; Tüfekçioğlu, Aydın; Güner, Sinan; Küçük, Mehmet; Aksu, Yaşar; Duman, Ahmet
This present project investigated the impact, extent and severity of bark beetle on Oriental spruce at tree and stand level through an extensive plot network on a portion of Hatila National Park in Artvin. In order to compare the behavior and effects of Ips. typographus on managed and unmanaged area, the Project was carried out in Hatila (unmanaged) and in Saçinka (managed) areas. Soil and stand characteristics of highly, moderately and not damaged (control) spruce stands on the north- and south-facing sites and at two slope positions (top slope-mean altitude 1700 m and bottom slope- 2100 m) on each aspect were determined in Hatila and Saçinka. The influences of aspect and slope position on bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) populations, body length and weight in Oriental Spruce (Picea orientalis) dominated stands in was only investigated in Hatila Valley National Park using pheromone traps. The effects of Ips. typographus damage on litter quality and decomposition rates of Oriental Spruce were also determined in Hatila. Results have showed that (1) bark beetle population, length and weight were significantly higher on south sapect and at top slope stands on each aspect. (2) soil and stands characteristics can be used as predictors of the vulnerability of oriental spruce stands to attack by Ips typographus, but the relationships between Ips typographus attack rates and site characteristics of spruce stands vary significantly according to aspect and slope position. (3) Ips typographus damage on Oriental spruce can accelerate litter decomposition rates by increasing N concentration and decreasing C:N and lignin:N ratios. With higher sand content and rainfall, this may result in leaching soil nutrients through the soil, and in turn this can influence nutrient cycling, soil productivity, soil chemistry, species dynamics and ecosystem development.

Artvin yöresi ormanlarında gerçekleştirilen bölmeden çıkarma ve yol yapımı çalışmalarından kaynaklanan zararların belirlenmesi üzerine araştırmalar
(TUBITAK, 2009) Erouğlu, Habip; Akkuzu, Erol; Sarıyıldız, Temel; Acar, Hulusi H.; Tilki, Fahrettin; Küçük, Mehmet; Yolasığmaz, Ahmet; Sönmez, Turan; Özkaya, Sinan
In this study, firstly, the efficiency and negative effects of logging were studied and effects of different logging techniques (with man power, tractor and skyline) on residual trees, seedlings and products were compared. Secondly, the effects of three timber logging techniques (skyline, tractor, manpower and chute system) on some physical properties and chemical properties of forest soil and. Permeability, moisture, water holding capacity, bulk density, fine and coarse soil and soil texture (sand, silt and clay) and organic matter, electrical conductivity, lime, P2O5, K2O, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Cu ve Mn content at two soil depths (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm) were determined at the loading, unloading, skid road, and undisturbed plots. Also, in this study the effects of forest roads on foliage discoloration levels of oriental spruce Picea orientalis (L.) Link by Ips typographus (L.), considering location, ground slope and ground surface type of the spruce stands was investigated. This part of study was carried out over two years (2006-2007) in Artvin-Hatila National Park, Turkey. A total of 480 spruce trees from 12 stands were sampled. The results showed that timber harvesting techniques resulted in damages to residual trees, seedlings, and timber products, but the degree of damages caused by the harvesting techniques was significantly different. The results show that in the region tractor and manpower can have an important influence on soil permeability, bulk density and the soil water balance and these techniques can significantly reduce soil organic matter and nutrients. It was noted in the field that these two logging techniques constantly removed the litter and humus on the forest floor. This reduced the amount of soil organic matter and nutrients. The removal of the organic matter and nutrients from the soil will also affect soil organisms which play an important role on organic matter decomposition rates. Besides, locations of the trees (down-slope, up-slope, and forest interior plots) and ground surface types of the area (rocky and non-rocky grounds) significantly affected the foliage discoloration levels, and mean foliage discoloration level of trees were highest in the down-slope plots followed by up-slope and forest interior plots. Mean foliage discoloration level of trees grown up on the rocky stands were significantly greater than those on the non-rocky stands, and mean stem volume of the trees with the foliage discoloration level 4 (death) were significantly greater than those with the other foliage discoloration levels (0, 1, 2, 3).

(Triveni Enterprises, 2008) Akkuzu, Erol; Güner, Sinan
Astudy concerning the effects of elevation and exposure of the spruce forests on defoliation levels of oriental spruce (Picea orientalis (L.) Link.) by Ips typographus L. wascarried outduring 2005 and 2006 in Artvin-Hatila National Park, Turkey. Nine spruce standswere selected at 3 zonesofelevations (1000-1350 m, 1350-1700 m and 1700-2000 m) and at different aspects to assess the role of elevation and exposure in the crown defoliation level and body length of beetles. Influence of bark thickness and trunk diameter at 1.3 m on the damage caused by the pestwas investigated aswell. The results of the study were as follows: (1) The mean defoliation level was highest at 1700-2000 m following by 1350-1700 m and 1000-1350 m. (2) The highest defoliation levels occurredonsouthernslopes following byeasternand northernslopesat 1700-2000 m. (3) Nostatistical differenceswere found in the mean barkthicknessbetween tree defoliation levels 1, 2, 3 and 4.(4) Mean trunk diameters of deadtrees(level 4) were significantly greater than thosewith defoliation levels 0, 1 and 2. (5) Mean body length of I. typographus at upper zones was significantly higher than those at middle and lower zones.

Effects of Ips typographus (L.) damage on litter quality and decomposition rates of Oriental Spruce [Picea Orientalis (L.) Link.] in Hatila Valley National Park, Turkey
(Springer, 2008) Sarıyıldız, Temel; Akkuzu, Erol; Küçük, Mehmet; Duman, Ahmet; Aksu, Yaşar
This study investigated the effects of Ips typographus (L.) damage on initial litter quality parameters and subsequent decomposition rates of oriental spruce tree species [Picea orientalis (L.) Link]. The needle litter was collected from highly damaged, moderately damaged and control stands on two aspects (north and south) and two slope position (top and bottom) on each aspect. The litter was analyzed for initial total carbon, lignin and nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and manganese) concentrations. The variability in nitrogen and calcium concentrations and ratios of C:N, lignin:N and lignin:Ca was significantly affected by the insect damaged levels. While nitrogen concentrations in needle litter increased with increasing insect damage (and consequently the ratios of C:N and lignin:N decreased), calcium concentrations decreased (and consequently the ratio of lignin:Ca increased). Aspect and slope positions explained most of the variability in carbon, lignin, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and manganese concentrations and lignin:P ratio between all studied stands. Litter decomposition was studied in the field using the litterbag technique. The litter from highly damaged stands showed highest decomposition rates followed by moderately damaged and control stands. The mass loss rates were significantly positively correlated with initial nitrogen concentration and negatively with C:N and lignin:N ratios. The effects of microclimate resulting from canopy damage on litter decomposition was also examined at the same time using standard litter with the same litter quality parameters, but they showed no significant differences among the insect damage levels indicating that alteration of the litter quality parameters produced by I. typographus damage played a more important role than altered microclimate in controlling needle litter decomposition rates. However, changes in microclimate factors due to topography influenced decomposition rates.

The impacts of timber harvesting techniques on residual trees, seedlings, and timber products in natural oriental spruce forests
(Academic Journals, 2009) Eroğlu, Habip; Öztürk, Ufuk Özcan; Sönmez, Turan; Tilki, Fahrettin; Akkuzu, Erol
The impacts of three timber harvesting techniques (manpower, skidder, and skyline) on residual trees, seedlings, and timber products were investigated in natural oriental spruce stands in Artvin, Turkey. Each of timber harvesting techniques was used in 5 different harvesting sites. The degree of damage caused by timber harvesting techniques in the residual trees, seedlings and timber products was calculated as based on injuring size. The results showed that timber harvesting techniques resulted in damages to residual trees, seedlings, and timber products, but the degree of damages caused by the harvesting techniques was significantly different. The highest level of damage was caused by manpower, followed by skidder and skyline harvesting technique. These results suggest that the damages caused by logging can be minimized by using proper timber harvesting techniques.

Ips typographus (l.)
