Öğe Challenges and technological requirements in landslide disaster search and rescue efforts: Türkiye Artvin landslide case study(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Usta, Galip; Gündüz, Fatma; Atalay, Ezgi; Torpuş, KemalDear Editor, Natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and rockfalls occur frequently in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye. As a result of the landslide in Artvin province on August 12, 2024, deaths occurred, and the international transportation route was closed. Artvin is a province with a high risk of landslide disasters. The main reasons for this situation include the fact that the region is sloped and exposed to too much rain. Landslides occurring in Artvin frequently cause various damages and loss of life. A landslide disaster occurred on August 12, 2024 at 03:15 in the Kıyıcık area of the Arhavi district of Artvin province. Due to the landslide, the Artvin-Rize highway, which is an international road, was closed to traffic in both directions. The landslide that occurred at the exit of the Kıyıcık tunnel in the Arhavi district caused the interruption of two-way transportation. It is said that 100 000 tons of soil mass moved in the area where the disaster occurred. At the same time, it has been determined that the risk of landslides continues in the region, and small slides occurred during the intervention works. In the success of search and rescue efforts, reaching the victim on time and starting the work immediately is an important factor. For this reason, it was reported that the relevant teams started working immediately to open the access road that was closed to traffic. By examining the PTS (License Plate Recognition System) records, it was determined that a vehicle entered the tunnel, but there were no exit images. Following this detection, search efforts were carried out in large quantities of soil. It has been determined that in detecting the vehicle buried under landslide, searches were conducted using new generation search devices with sensors, supported by the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration. Additionally, searches were conducted using drone systems and the Coast Guard teams searched from the sea. After the sensor search device detected the vehicle under the landslide, rescue efforts were carried out. Following search and rescue activities, the vehicle wreckage under landslide was reached and it was determined that 4 people had died.Öğe Evaluation of cable car accidents and rescue operations(Cambridge University Press, 2024) Usta, Galip; Torpuş, Kemal; Gündüz, Fatma; Atalay, EzgiDear Editor: A cable car is defined as a cable transport system in which carriers are suspended and pushed forward by one or more cables. Ropeways, which were first developed for freight transport in general, have started to be used for human transport, that is, for transport purposes in later times. In the literature, it is stated that the transport system with the cable car system is a comfortable, sustainable, and reliable transport system. However, due to the problems experienced in cable car lines, it has been evaluated that rare cable car accidents may cause serious consequences.Öğe Evaluation of Kahramanmaraş centered earthquake in Türkiye in terms of disaster crisis management: The case of AFAD x (Twitter)(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2025) Gündüz Zeybekoğlu, Fatma; Atalay, Ezgi; Torpuş, Kemal; Bekircan, Esra; Usta, GalipThe study aims to measure the effectiveness of AFAD's X account and to determine the role of social media in providing accurate information and coordination. In the study, tweets sent by AFAD between 01 January 2023 and 05 March 2023 are divided into periods before and after the earthquake. The tweets sent before and after the earthquake were compared. After the earthquake on February 6, 2023, it was discovered that AFAD's official X account actively communicated information and warnings. It has been established that the content sharing covers examples of solidarity, search and rescue operations, the number of individuals missing, shelter requirements, and evacuation management. Active use of social media accounts is important in disaster management. AFAD's X account can contribute to obtaining more information on pre-disaster preparedness. Analysis of trending words in post-earthquake communication strategies can be used to provide necessary information for disaster management and response.Öğe Evaluation of the effect of women's psychological power on disaster risk perception(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Gündüz Zeybekoǧlu, Fatma; Usta, Galip; Atalay, Ezgi; Torpuş, KemalObjectives In this study, we aimed to examine the effect of women's perceptions of psychological power related to gender roles on their disaster risk perceptions. Methods This cross-sectional and descriptive study was planned in a correlational design. The study was completed with 272 people who met the inclusion criteria. Data for the study were collected between February 21, 2024 and March 7, 2024. The Independent sample t test was used for the comparison of two independent groups and one way analysis of variance was used for the comparison of two or more unrelated groups. A Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between numerical variables. Results Women who had previously experienced a disaster were found to have higher scores on the strength/advocacy, threat, anxiety, and disaster risk perception scale than those who had not. A moderate positive correlation was found between the increase in women's perceptions of psychological power and their perceptions of threat, controllability, anxiety levels, and disaster risk perceptions, while a low negative correlation was found with their perceptions of fatalism. Conclusions It was concluded that women's psychological strength affects disaster risk perception. Psychological empowerment of women is thought to be important in ensuring disaster resilience.Öğe Flood disaster experiences of elderly individuals living in the western black sea region of Türkiye: a phenomenological study(BioMed Central Ltd, 2025) Atalay, Ezgi; Gündüz Zeybeyoğlu, Fatma; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, GalipThe increase in the elderly population, the issue of flood risk management and flood preparedness stands out as an important issue that needs special attention. This study aimed to evaluate the feelings and thoughts of the elderly individuals who experienced floods in Türkiye before, during, and after the floods, and to reveal how they were affected, their vulnerability, and coping capacities. In this regard, phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Purposive sampling techniques were used for this study. A semi-structured interview form, which was prepared by the researchers by reviewing the relevant literature and taking expert opinions, was used to collect the data. The data of the study were collected between September and October 2024. The study was carried out with 14 people based on data saturation. Within the scope of the study, three themes were created. These are (theme 1) elderly people's risk knowledge and their views on the preparation process, (theme 2) vulnerabilities and coping capacities of elderly individuals during disasters, and (theme 3) post-flood needs, social network relations, and lessons learned. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that elderly individuals were aware of local disaster hazards, but despite this, the elderly did not make individual disaster preparations. It was determined that elderly individuals do not have sufficient access to early warning messages before the flood disaster occurs. During the disaster, elderly individuals were trapped in water, exhibited risky behaviors, experienced fragility during the evacuation process, and suffered material and moral losses. In the post-disaster period, elderly individuals have some basic needs such as clean water, medicine, shelter, toilets, nutrition, clothing, and health care, and their neighbors and relatives provide support in meeting these needs. The results obtained from the study may contribute to increasing the flood response capacity for elderly individuals, a vulnerable group in disasters.Öğe Investigation of avalanche events occurring in Palandöken Ski Resort(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Atalay, Ezgi; Gündüz, FatmaThe aim of the study is to examine the avalanche events that occurred in Erzurum Palandöken Ski Resort. Palandöken’s topography makes it vulnerable to avalanches. Avalanches are the rapid and sudden flow of snow masses accumulated on slopes and are considered one of the natural disasters. Several avalanches have occurred on Palandöken Mountain, leading to tragic results. In 1974, six people were buried under an avalanche and rescue teams were injured in a secondary avalanche. In subsequent years, avalanches died four people in 1975, one person in 1976, and eight people on Dragon Peak in 1977. In 2006, one tourist died in an avalanche on Palandöken Mountain. The last avalanche disaster on Palandöken Mountain, which occurred on December 21, 2024, resulted in the death of an athlete from the Kocaeli Judo National Team of the Turkish Olympic Preparation Center. Palandöken, one of Türkiye’s leading winter tourism destinations, hosts international events but faces significant avalanche risks due to its topography. In order to reduce these risks, it is essential to establish avalanche early warning and monitoring systems, provide avalanche safety training for tourists and personnel, and implement infrastructure measures to reduce avalanche hazards.
