Öğe Evaluation of Kahramanmaraş centered earthquake in Türkiye in terms of disaster crisis management: The case of AFAD x (Twitter)(Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey Üniversitesi, 2025) Gündüz Zeybekoğlu, Fatma; Atalay, Ezgi; Torpuş, Kemal; Bekircan, Esra; Usta, GalipThe study aims to measure the effectiveness of AFAD's X account and to determine the role of social media in providing accurate information and coordination. In the study, tweets sent by AFAD between 01 January 2023 and 05 March 2023 are divided into periods before and after the earthquake. The tweets sent before and after the earthquake were compared. After the earthquake on February 6, 2023, it was discovered that AFAD's official X account actively communicated information and warnings. It has been established that the content sharing covers examples of solidarity, search and rescue operations, the number of individuals missing, shelter requirements, and evacuation management. Active use of social media accounts is important in disaster management. AFAD's X account can contribute to obtaining more information on pre-disaster preparedness. Analysis of trending words in post-earthquake communication strategies can be used to provide necessary information for disaster management and response.Öğe Evalution of volunteer motivations: Kahramanmaraş centered earthquakes(Ankara University, 2025) Usta, Galip; Torpuş, Kemal; Bekircan, EsraThis study aims to evaluate the motivation of volunteers in Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes in Türkiye and to provide a framework for increasing the well-being of volunteers and the sustainability of volunteerism. This research is cross-sectional and descriptive. The study's participants were volunteers who were at least eighteen years old and who had participated in the February 6, 2023, earthquakes in Türkiye. Sociodemographic form and volunteer motivation inventory were used as data collection tools. 414 volunteers who freely engaged in the earthquake disaster completed the data gathering instruments, and agreed to participate in the study made it complete. This study assessed volunteer motivation, which is an important source of social capital during disasters, according to a number of criteria. One of the scale's sub-dimensions, reciprocity scores, was shown to have a statistically significant gender difference. People who had encountered a calamity scored lower than those who had not, according to this study. Volunteer motivation was found to be impacted by disaster training. The reciprocity score, one of the scale's sub-dimensions, was shown to be correlated with the people's income levels. Individuals with low income levels demonstrated lower reciprocity scores than those with medium income levels, according to the findings. As a result of this study's findings, initiatives designed to encourage volunteerism in times of disaster should take into consideration factors like gender, financial level, and prior experience with disasters. It is advised to carry out more research using a mixed method design in order to assess other factors influencing volunteer motivation.Öğe Life satisfaction of university students surviving the 6th February earthquakes in Türkiye and the predictors thereof(Routledge, 2025) Kanbay, Yalçın; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Çınar Özbay, Sevil; Bekircan, EsraSurvivors of an earthquake disaster are at high risk of experiencing mental disorders, therefore their life satisfaction may be adversely affected accordingly. This study aims to examine the relationship between university students’ life satisfaction and social support, mental well-being, and psychological resilience levels. 449 students who were enrolled in higher education institutions in Türkiye and who experienced the earthquake disaster occurring on February 6th, 2023 participated in the study. The data of the study were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Research data were collected using the “Personal Information Form (PIF)”, “Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS)”, “Brief Resilience Scale (BRS)”, “Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale” and “Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)”. Research results revealed that the variables of social support, mental well-being, and psychological resilience together could explain 29% (R2 = 0.29) of the variation in life satisfaction. The model further indicated that the most effective variable on life satisfaction is social support. Life satisfaction improves in parallel with the increase in social support, mental well-being, and psychological resilience. Studies aiming to minimize the destructive effects of earthquakes and to improve the life satisfaction of individuals are of great importance in countries located in the earthquake zone.Öğe The effect of big five personality traits of prospective disaster risk managers on individual disaster resilience(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2024) Bekircan, Esra; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Kanday, Yalçın; Demiröz, Kader; Bulut, Enes; Çınar Özbay, SevilThis study aims to investigate the effect of the big five personality traits of prospective disaster risk managers on their individual disaster resilience. This study was conducted using a correlational research design. 200 students studying at state and foundation universities between April and May 2024 participated in the study. Personal Information Form, Five Factor Personality Inventory and Individual Disaster Resilience Scale were used as data collection tools. The data from the study were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling. The results of the study revealed that the personality traits of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to development have a significant and positive effect on individual disaster resilience. On the other hand, the sub-dimension of neuroticism was found to have a significant but negative effect on individual disaster resilience; individual disaster resilience was found to decrease as neuroticism increased. It was concluded that this study highlights the importance of personality traits for disaster management and psychological support practices. Accordingly, it was suggested that further research should focus on programmes that prioritise stress management and psychological therapy programmes, particularly for individuals with high levels of neuroticism, as well as disaster awareness and preparedness training for the general population.Öğe The effect of psychological first aid intervention on stress and psychological resilience in volunteers participating in 2023 earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey(SPRINGER, 2023) Bekircan, Esra; Usta, Galip; Torpuş, KemalThe aim of the study was to investigate the impact of psychological first aid intervention on stress and resilience in volunteers who participated in two significant earthquakes 2023 in Turkey. It is a single-blind randomized controlled trial to assess the effect of an online psychological first aid intervention on earthquake participants' stress and resilience levels. It was determined that the participants had a higher-than-average level of stress before the psychological first-aid intervention. The psychological first aid intervention group's stress level was shown to be considerably lower than the control group's. It is thought that online psychological first aid interventions should be provided for the psychological needs of the volunteers involved in disasters. A social benefit can be achieved by aiming to increase the psychological resilience levels of volunteers who take part in disasters and prevent psychological traumas.
