& Schiff.) Yapılan çalışmalar kapsamında, yumurta koçanları on bir farklı ilde kızılçam [Pinus brutia Tenore] meşcerelerinden toplanmıştır. Toplam 841 adet yumurta koçanı farklı yükseltilerden ve ağaçtaki konumuna (alt/orta/üst) göre elde edilmiştir. Toplanan koçanların laboratuvarda fırça yardımıyla pulları kaldırılarak sayım ve ölçüm işlemleri yapılmıştır. Koçan başına ortalama yumurta sayısı 194,7, tırtıl çıkış oranı %63,7’dir. Alt, orta ve üst yükselti basamaklarında ortalama yumurta sayısı sırasıyla 183,7, 197,8, 214,6, tırtıl çıkış oranı %60,1, %67,6, %71,9’dur. Ağaçtaki konumuna göre alt, orta, üst tepe kademelerine göre, ortalama yumurta sayısı sırasıyla 185,8, 167,0, 201,7 (ort=184,8), tırtıl çıkış oranı %67,0, %64,7 ve % 69,1 (ort: %66,9)’dir. Sonuçlarda ağaçtaki konum ve yükselti basamaklarına göre yumurta sayısı ve tırtıl çıkış oranlarında küçük farklılıklar görülmesine rağmen, yükselti basamaklarında yumurta koçanının ibre kınına olan uzaklığı haricinde, istatistiki olarak anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmamıştır (p>0,05).Öğe Diurnal surface fuel moisture prediction model for Calabrian pine stands in Turkey(SISEF - Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology, 2019) Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Çoşkuner, Kadir Alperen; Usta, Yetkin; Sağlam, Bülent; Küçük, Ömer; Berber, Tolga; Göltaş, MerihThis study presents a dynamic model for the prediction of diurnal changes in the moisture content of dead surface fuels in normally stocked Calabrian pine stands under varying weather conditions. The model was developed based on several empirical relationships between moisture contents of dead surface fuels and weather variables, and calibrated using field data collected from three Calabrian stands from three different regions of Turkey (Mugla, southwest; Antalya, south; Trabzon, north-east). The model was tested and validated with independent measurements of fuel moisture from two sets of field observations made during dry and rainy periods. Model predictions showed a mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.19% for litter and 0.90% for duff at Mugla, and 3.62% for litter and 14.38% for duff at Antalya. When two rainy periods were excluded from the analysis at Antalya site, the MAE decreased from 14.38% to 4.29% and R-2 increased from 0.25 to 0.83 for duff fuels. Graphical inspection and statistical validation of the model indicated that the diurnal litter and duff moisture dynamics could be predicted reasonably. The model can easily be adapted for other similar fuel types in the Mediterranean region.Öğe The effect factors on transition from surface fire to crown fire(Kastamonu Üniversitesi, 2009) Küçük, Ömer; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Dinç Durmaz, Bahar; Sağlam, Bülent; Baysal, İsmailForest fire is one of the main factors that have an effecting on vegetation dynamics. Forest fires generally start and develop on surface litter layer. Surface fires turn into crown fires under suitable fuel and weather conditions. Transition from surface fire to crown fire depends on surface fuel conditions intermediate fuel layer (load, horizontal and vertical fuel continuity, and fuel moisture content), crown crown fuel load and moisture content, crown base height, slope and wind. This paper reports on the factors effecting transition from surface fire to crown fire.Öğe Estimating crown fuel loading for calabrian pine and Anatolian black pine(CSIRO Publishing, 2008) Küçük, Ömer; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Sağlam, BülentFuels are of great importance in fire behaviour prediction. This paper deals with the prediction of aboveground foliage and branch biomass of calabrian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) and Anatolian black pine (P. nigra J.F. Arnold subsp. nigra var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder). The study was based on a total of 418 destructively sampled calabrian and black pine trees and saplings. As a result of the analyses, several regression equations were developed for predicting foliage, fine branch (<0.6 cm), medium branch (0.6-1.0 cm), active fuels (foliage+fine branch), thick branch (1.0-2.5 cm), and total fuel loading. The relationships between fuel biomass and tree properties were determined by multiple linear regressions, considering tree properties as the independent variables, and foliage, branch, active fuel and total biomass as the dependent variables. Tree properties included tree height, crown length, crown width, diameter at breast height and root collar diameter. Results indicated that foliage, branch and total biomass could all be accurately predicted based on the readily measurable and/or predictable tree characteristics. Of the fuel characteristics, crown length, crown width, and height were the three most significant predictors of fuel biomass. The results of this study will not only contribute to the prediction of fire behaviour, but will also be of invaluable use in other forestry disciplines.Öğe Estimating fuel biomass of some shrub species (maquis) in Turkey(TUBITAK Scientific & Technical Research Council Turkey, 2008) Sağlam, Bülent; Küçük, Ömer; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Dinç Durmaz, Bahar; Baysal, İsmailRegression equations were developed to estimate shrub fuel biomass of a maquis formation in western Turkey. The relationships between some shrub characteristics and live, dead, available (for consumption), and total fuel biomass were determined by simple/multiple linear regression. Measured biomass values for live, available, and total fuels varied from 0.70 to 6.74 kg m-2, from 0.78 to 3.03 kg m-2, and from 1.06 to 7.72 kg m-2, respectively. The results obtained indicated that shrub fuel biomass could be satisfactorily predicted using the regression equations generated. The resulting equations were able to account for 60% to 89% of the observed variation (P < 0.05) in the fuel biomass categories studied. The results of this study should be invaluable in many forestry disciplines, including ecology, protection, and managementÖğe Estimating Mediterranean stand fuel characteristics using handheld mobile laser scanning technology(CSIRO, 2023) Coşkuner, Kadir Alperen; Vatandaşlar, Can; Öztürk, Murat; Harman, İsmet; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Karahalil, Uzay; Berber, Tolga; Tunç Görmüs, EsraBackground: Accurate, timely and easily obtainable information on stand fuel is of great importance in the prediction of fire behaviour. Aims: The objective of this study is to measure several stand fuel characteristics with handheld mobile laser scanning (HMLS) in six fuel types for Mediterranean region, and compare the results with traditional field fuel measurements (FFM) in 35 different sampling plots. Methods: The measurements involved overstorey (the number of trees, diameter at breast height, crown base height, tree height, maximum tree height, stand crown closure) and understorey (understorey closure, understorey height) fuel characteristics, and ground slope. Correlation analysis and t-test were performed to examine the relationship between FFM and HMLS datasets. In addition, cross-validation statistics (RMSE, rRMSE and R2) were employed to evaluate the accuracy of the HMLS method. Key results: The results indicated strong correlations among all fuel characteristics. However, overstorey fuel characteristics were more favourable (r-values between 0.804 and 0.996, P < 0.01) than understorey (r-values between 0.483 and 0.612, P < 0.01). There was no significant difference between FFM and HMLS datasets in all fuel characteristics (P > 0.05). Conclusions: The results indicated that the HMLS was practical, cost-effective, time-efficient and required less labour as compared to traditional FFM in plot-level (i.e. 0.1 ha) inventories.Öğe Farklı eğim grubu ve nem koşullarında maki tipi yanıcı maddelerde yangın davranışının belirlenmesi ve coğrafi bilgi sistemleri kullanılarak haritalanması(TUBITAK, 2008) Sağlam, Bülent; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Küçük, Ömer; Durmaz, Dinç Bahar; Yolasığmaz, Hacı Ahmet; Sönmez, Turan; Akkuzu, Erol; Baysal, İsmail; Işık, TuncayYangına hassas ekosistemlerde, yangın davranışını tahmin etmek, yangın öncesi, yangın sonrası ve yangınla mücadele çalışmalarını içeren yangın amenajman planlamaları açısından hayati önem taşımaktadır. This paper deals with an experimental burning exercise conducted in the Mediterranean region in Turkey. A series of 18 experimental fires were carried out in tall maquis fuels in Asar District, Antalya, southwestern Turkey. The site was selected for its structural homogeneity. But, there was an apparent variation in the fuel loadings in different plots. Weather conditions were within reasonable ranges during the burns. Wind speed ranged from 4.8 to 14.4 km h(-1), relative humidity from 16 to 76% and air temperature from 23.7 to 36 degrees C. Of the fire behavior characteristics, rate of spread ranged from 0.38 to 7.35 m min(-1), fuel consumption from 1.57 to 3.05 kg m(-2), and fire intensity from 188.72 to 5906.48 kW m(-1). Rate of spread was related to wind speed, relative humidity, moisture content of live fuels and vegetation cover. Fuel consumption was related to fuel loading and wind speed, and fire intensity was related to wind speed, moisture contents of live fuels and mean vegetation height and vegetation cover. Results obtained in this study should be invaluable in fire management planning.Öğe Forest fires and birds(Kastamonu Üniversitesi, 2017) Baysal, İsmail; Uçarlı, Yasin; Bilgili, ErtuğrulAim of study: To present and discuss the behavior of some bird species and their habitat use during and after forest fires, and propose some suggestions for decision makers for forestry activities and management planning where forest fire intensively occur in forested areas. Area of study: Several forest fires that took place in different regions in Turkey in the last 10 years have been discussed. Some experimental fires conducted over the years were also included in the study. Material and Methods: Concerning the active forest fires; fire type, fuel type, characteristics of fire behavior were noted; head fire, flank and back fire observations were made and, after fire field observations and investigations were recorded. During and after the fire, bird species were observed in the field, identified and its behavior were recorded using binoculars, cameras and a video camera. Main results: Behavior of birds during and after fires were reported and discussed. It was observed that birds exploited the area instantaneously due to the sudden increase of food supply during the fire, and continued to utilize the area as the habitats became more suitable especially after fires. Research highlights: Fire affects living and non-living components of forest ecosystems. Birds are an important living component of the ecosystems that are both directly affected by fires and indirectly affected by changes in their habitats. Developmental stage (juvenile or mature), feeding habits and habitat use of birds are critical characteristics that are referred to in relation to the identification of benefits and losses due to firesÖğe Mega forest fires: causes, organization and management(TÜBA- Turkish Academy of Sciences, 2021) Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Küçük, Ömer; Sağlam, Bülent; Coşkuner, AlperenThe year 2021 is important in terms of forest fire history in our country. Because during the end of July to mid-August, when the weather conditions were unusual, fires that could be classified as "mega fires" took place. These fires are very fast-spreading, high-intensity and destructive fires. In cases where the moisture content of fine dead combustible material falls below 7% and the wind speed exceeds 25 km/h, the spread rate, intensity and the severity of fire increase significantly. One of the most important features of mega fires is that the spread of the fire is supported by multiple and long-range spotting. Such fires cannot be intervened directly in situations where flammable materials, terrain conditions and especially weather conditions do not allow. For this reason, when the weather conditions are unusual, the only possible suppression strategy for major fires should be to take precautionary measures to protect lives, important places and resources. In this context, it is a priority to implement measures related to the safety of life and property. In this section, the causes, organization and management of mega forest fires were evaluated, and suggestions made for practical applications. The causes of major fires and the factors affecting the magnitude of the damage of mega fires were evaluated in the context of the fire that affected approximately 55 thousand hectares of land in Antalya-Manavgat in 2021.Öğe Orman yangın yönetiminde etkili bir karar destek sisteminin kavramsal çerçevesi(Artvin Çoruh Üniversitesi, 2020) Coskuner, Kadir Alperen; Bilgili, ErtuğrulOrman yangın organizasyonları, yangınlarla mücadelede başarılı olabilmek için doğru, güncel ve kolaylıkla elde edilebilir bilgilere ihtiyaç duyar. Geliştirilen sistem tasarımı uygulamada kullanılabilecek şekilde hazır hale geldiğinde, orman yangınları ile mücadelede yangın yöneticilerine yangın öncesi, yangınla mücadele ve yangın sonrası planlamalarda önemli katkılar sunacak potansiyeldedir.Öğe Soil organic matter, soil pH and soil nutrient dynamics in forest stands after fire([y.y.], 2004) Altun, Lokman; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Sağlam, Bülent; Küçük, Ömer; Yılmaz, Murat; Tüfekçioğlu, AydınFires burn, spread and release energy. The process of burning not only helps increase the decomposition of organic matters but also causes the plant nutrients bound to vegetation and organic dead material to get into soil and inflicts changes on the physical and chemical properties of soil. Changes taken place in soils and their status over time are extremely important for the success of the vegetation that will establish on the site after fire. This study presents the results of a study conducted to monitor the changes in plant nutrients and soil’s chemical properties. In the study, soil organic matter, soil reaction (pH), salinity and soil nutrients were measured. Soil reaction, N and K slightly increased after fire and decreased gradually thereafter. Other nutrients gradually decreased after fire throughout the study period. As a result, it can be said that the effect of fires on soils in areas having little or no dead surface fuels are limited, yet important.Öğe Soil properties and root biomass responses to prescribed burning in young corsican pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) stands(Triveni Enterprises, 2010) Tüfekçioğlu, Aydın; Küçük, Mehmet; Sağlam, Bülent; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Altun, LokmanFire is an important tool in the management of forest ecosystems. Although both prescribed and wildland fires are common in Turkey, few studies have addressed the influence of such disturbances on soil properties and root biomass dynamics. In this study soil properties and root biomass responses to prescribed fire were investigated in 25-year-old corsican pine (Pinus nigra Am.) stands in Kastamonu, Turkey The stands were established by planting and were subjected to prescribed burning in July 2003. Soil respiration rates were determined every two months using soda-lime method over a two- year period, Fine (0-2 mm diameter) and small root (2-5 mm diameter) biomass were sampled approximately bimonthly using sequential coring method. Mean daily soil respiration ranged from 0.65 to 2.19 g Cm(-2) d(-1) among all sites. Soil respiration rates were significantly higher in burned sites than in controls. Soil respiration rates were correlated significantly with soil moisture and soil temperature. Fine root biomass was significantly lower in burned sites than in control sites. Mean fine root biomass values were 4940 kg ha(-1) for burned and 5450 kg ha(-1) for control sites. Soil pH was significantly higher in burned sites than in control sites in 15-35 cm soil depth. Soil organic matter content did not differ significantly between control and burned sites. Our results indicate that, depending on site conditions, fire could be used successfully as a tool in the management of forest stands in the study areaÖğe Some parameters affecting fire behavior in Anatolian black pine slash(TUBITAK Scientific & Technical Research Council Turkey, 2008) Küçük, Ömer; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Sağlam, Bülent; Şağdan, Başkaya; Dinç Durmaz, BaharThis study presents and discusses the results of a fire behavior study conducted in Anatolian black pine (Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold subsp. nigra var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder) slash. A total of 30 experimental fires were conducted over 3 years under varying weather and fuel loading conditions in aging slash. Relationships between fire behavior and fuel properties and weather conditions were determined with correlation and regression analyses. Spread rate, fuel consumption, and fire intensity were all related to fuel properties and weather, and ranged from 0.2 to 3.1 m min(-1), from 0.71 to 6.65 kg m(-2), and from 14.05 to 3961.46 kW m(-1), respectively. Fuel loading ranged from 1.56 kg m(-2) to 6.96 kg m(-2). Differences in fire behavior were clearly shown to be a function of wind speed, fuel moisture, slash age, and fuel loading. Results obtained in this study should be invaluable in overall fire management practices. However, its use should be restricted to the range of conditions within which the data were gathered.Öğe Spatio-temporal analysis of forest fire risk and danger using Landsat imagery(MDPI, 2008) Sağlam, Bülent; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Dinç Durmaz, Bahar; Kadıoğulları, Ali İhsan; Küçük, ÖmerComputing fire danger and fire risk on a spatio-temporal scale is of crucial importance in fire management planning, and in the simulation of fire growth and development across a landscape. However, due to the complex nature of forests, fire risk and danger potential maps are considered one of the most difficult thematic layers to build up. Remote sensing and digital terrain data have been introduced for efficient discrete classification of fire risk and fire danger potential. In this study, two time-series data of Landsat imagery were used for determining spatio-temporal change of fire risk and danger potential in Korudag forest planning unit in northwestern Turkey. The method comprised the following two steps: (1) creation of indices of the factors influencing fire risk and danger; (2) evaluation of spatio-temporal changes in fire risk and danger of given areas using remote sensing as a quick and inexpensive means and determining the pace of forest cover change. Fire risk and danger potential indices were based on species composition, stand crown closure, stand development stage, insolation, slope and, proximity of agricultural lands to forest and distance from settlement areas. Using the indices generated, fire risk and danger maps were produced for the years 1987 and 2000. Spatio-temporal analyses were then realized based on the maps produced. Results obtained from the study showed that the use of Landsat imagery provided a valuable characterization and mapping of vegetation structure and type with overall classification accuracy higher than 83%.Öğe The studies to support a fire danger rating system in Turkey(KASTAMONU UNIV, 2007) Küçük, Ömer; Bilgili, Ertuğrul; Sağlam, Bülent; Dinç Durmaz, Bahar; Baysal, İsmailForest fires are a primary damaging agent of Turkey's forests, and have a significant economic impact. Turkey has a Mediterranean climate, and over half (12 million hectares) of its forests are located in a coastal band area that is 160 km wide and 1700 km long. The band starts at the eastern Mediterranean coast and includes the Aegean and Marmara coasts. This band is a fire-sensitive region, with thousands of hectares burned annually. The value of a decision support system, such as the Fire danger Rating System (FDRS), is recognized in Turkey as a key tool in fire fighting and limiting economic impacts. However the information base to implement FDRS does not exist in Turkey. As a result, the study described in this paper was initiated to develop that information.
