Öğe The alpha-skew hyperbolic secant distribution with applications to an astronomical dataset(Nicel Bilimler Dergisi (Online), 2022) Korkmaz, Mustafa Çağatay; Toibourani, El-Fahad; Kioeye, Jean Yves Togo; Chesneau, ChristopheThis work demonstrates the attractivity of the alpha-skew hyperbolic secant distribution, a new skewed distribution based on the alpha-skew technique and the hyperbolic secant distribution. In the first part, we determine its main features, including its cumulative distribution function, modality, non-central moments, skewness, kurtosis, moment generating function and characteristic function. The remaining part is devoted to the model applicability in a statistical context. As a first step, the parameters are estimated by maximum likelihood estimates. Then, we perform a data fitting experiment and compare the values of the Akaike and Bayesian information criteriawith those of some other similar distributions. By considering an astronomical dataset and valuable competitors also based on the alpha-skew technique, the alpha-skew hyperbolic secant distribution turns out to be the best.Öğe A new alternative quantile regression model for the bounded response with educational measurements applications of OECD countries(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2021) Korkmaz, Mustafa Çağatay; Chesneau, Christophe; Korkmaz, Zehra SedefThis article introduces a new distribution with two tuning parameters specified on the unit interval. It follows from a ‘hyperbolic secant transformation’ of a random variable following the Weibull distribution. The lack of research on the prospect of hyperbolic transformations providing flexible distributions over the unit interval is a motivation for the study. The main distributional structural properties of the new distribution are established. The different estimation methods and two simulation works have been derived for model parameters. Subsequently, we develop a related quantile regression model for further statistical perspectives. We consider two real data applications based on the educational measurements of both OECD and some non-members of OECD countries. Our regression model aims to relate the desire to get top grades on certain young students in the OECD countries with some of their Education and School Life Index such as reading performance, work environment at home, and paid work experience. It is shown that the elaborated quantile regression model has a better fitting power than famous regression models when the unit response variable possesses skewed distribution as well as two independent variables are significant in the statistical sense at any standard significance level for the median response.Öğe On the arcsecant hyperbolic normal distribution. It is obtained by a novel transformation of a normal random variable involving the hyperbolic secant function and its inverse. The use of such a function in distribution theory has not received much attention in the literature, and may be of interest for theoretical and practical purposes. Basic statistical properties of the newly defined distribution are derived, including moments, skewness, kurtosis and order statistics. For the related model, the parametric estimation is examined through different methods. We assess the performance of the obtained estimates by two complementary simulation studies. Also, the quantile regression model based on the proposed distribution is introduced. The basic statistical properties of the newly defined distribution are studied. Parameters estimation is dealt and different estimation methods are assessed through two simulation studies. A new quantile regression model based on the proposed distribution is introduced. It is obtained by the transformation of a positive random variable following the Chen distribution with respect to the inverted exponential function. Basic distributional properties of the newly defined distribution are studied. Then, as a statistical model, we examine different methods of estimation for related parameters. We assess the performance of the obtained estimators by a complete simulation study. Subsequently, the quantile regression model based on the proposed distribution is introduced. It consists of applying the quadratic transmutation scheme with the unit Rayleigh distribution. The quantile regression model of the proposed distribution is developed, as well as the maximum likelihood estimation of the unknown regression model parameters. We consider a real data application that links a measure of the educational attainment of OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries with some of their Better Life Index such as life satisfaction, homicide rate, and voter turnout. It is shown that the proposed quantile regression model provides a better fit than well-known regression models in the literature when the unit response variable has skewed observations and outliers.Öğe The unit folded normal distribution: a new unit probability distribution with the estimation procedures, quantile regression modeling and educational attainment applications(River Publishers, 2022) Korkmaz, Mustafa Çağatay; Chesneau, Christophe; Korkmaz, Zehra SedefIn this paper, we develop a continuous distribution on the unit interval characterized by the distribution of the absolute hyperbolic tangent transformation of a random variable following the normal distribution. The lack of research on the prospect of hyperbolic transformations providing flexible distributions on the unit interval is a motivation for the study. First, we study it theoretically and discuss its properties of interest from a modeling point of view. In particular, it is shown that the proposed distribution accommodates various levels of skewness and kurtosis. Then, some statistical work is performed. We investigate diverse estimation methods for the involved parameters and evaluate their performance through two simulation studies. Subsequently, the quantile regression model derived from the proposed distribution is developed. Two real-world data applications of interest are provided. The first application is about the univariate modeling of the percentage of the educational attainment of some countries, which is one indicator of the education topic of the Better Life Index (BLI) of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. The second application is to explain the relationship between the percentage of educational attainment of some countries with one indicator of the work-life balance, safety, and health topics of BLI via median quantile regression modeling. For the considered data sets, the proposed distribution and quantile regression models show that they have better modeling abilities than competitive models under some comparison criteria. The results also indicate that covariates are (statistically) significant at any ordinary level of significance for the median response.
