    Evaluation and mapping of radioactivity and radiological risks in sediments before the nuclear power plant in Türkiye

    The main aim of this study was to investigated background levels of radioisotopes ¹³?Cs (Cesium), ²³²Th (Thorium), ??K (Potassium), and ²²?Ra (Radium) in all samples taken from two important rivers of the Sinop province prior to the nuclear power plant. The sediment samples were taken from the Karasu (80 km) and Kabalı (51.3 km) rivers at 2 km distances in July 2019, the month with the least precipitation, and in December 2018, the month with the most precipitation, before the nuclear power plant built in the Sinop province became active. The concentrations of ²²?Ra, ²³²Th, ¹³?Cs and ??K in the collected sediment samples were measured using a high purity germanium detector (HPGe). The activity concentrations of ²²?Ra, ²³²Th, ¹³?Cs and ??K in the sediment samples taken from the Karasu River in December and in July were in the range of 3.08–29.40 Bq/kg, 2.95–19.10 Bq/kg, 0.35–61.13 Bq/kg and 54.83–495.02 Bq/kg, respectively. In the sediment samples collected from the Kabalı River in December and in July, ²²?Ra, ²³²Th, ¹³?Cs and 40K activity concentrations were in the range of 5.79–25.65 Bq/kg, 3.35–19.55 Bq/kg, 0.97–7.23 Bq/kg and 141.66–446.77 Bq/kg, respectively. Some risk parameters were also calculated to assess radiological hazards. These values were found to be lower than the world averages recommended by international organizations. Based on all the results obtained, it can be concluded that the examined samples do not pose a radiological risk.

    Investigation and mapping of natural and artificial radioactivity in sediment samples from Borcka Black Lake, Artvin-Turkey

    All living creatures in nature are constantly exposed to ionising radiation, which is emitted from natural and artificial radiation sources. For this reason, it is important to monitor the levels of radioactivity in living spaces and visited areas. In this study, natural (U-238, Th-232, K-40) and artificial (Cs-137) radioactivity concentrations in sediment samples taken from Borcka Black Lake located on the Nature Park in Artvin province were determined using a high purity germanium detector (HPGe). It was determined that U-238, Th-232, K-40 and Cs-137 radioisotope concentrations in the sediment samples varied between 8.73 and 26.45, 7.01 and 22.98, 289.92 and 578.98, and 6.26 and 70.96 Bq kg(-1), respectively. Mean radioactivity concentrations were found to be 14.99 +/- 0.89 Bq kg(-1) for U-238, 13.85 +/- 1.10 Bq kg(-1) for Th-232, 473.67 +/- 14.21 Bq kg(-1) for K-40 and 35.06 +/- 0.96 Bq kg(-1) for Cs-137. In order to evaluate the radiological hazards, radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, absorbed dose rate in the air, the annual effective dose rate and excess life time cancer risk were calculated and compared with the values recommended by international organisations. As a result, it has been shown with this study that the radioactivity caused by the examined radioisotopes will not pose any health risk for the visitors of Borcka Black Lake.

    Investigation of radioactivity concentrations and soil-to-plant transfer factors in soil samples taken from different distance zones to the Metsamor nuclear power plant

    Monitoring radioactivity around nuclear power plants is important to avoid the risks of radiation. This study provides an overview of the radioactive emission impact on the near surroundings of the Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia. In this context, 29 soil samples were collected from the 40, 80, 120, 160 km radius areas determined in the direction of Iğdır province by accepting the Metsamor nuclear power plant as the center. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs in soil samples ranged from 7.90 to 23.44, 7.11 to 33.55, 132.54 to 502.69 and 0.33 to 17.61 Bq/kg, respectively. In addition, the radioactivity concentrations in some agricultural products and the transfer factors from soil to plant were determined. As a result, there is no significant radiological risk in terms of studied radioisotopes for people living in this region.

    Radioactivity in soils of Kosovo and radiological implications

    This study was carried out to determine the presence of the main radionuclides from natural and artificial radioactivity in the soil of Kosovo, using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The mean activity concentration for Ra-226, Th-232, K-40, and Cs-137 was 22.32 +/- 1.41, 22.14 +/- 1.31, 358.16 +/- 8.85, and 12.94 +/- 0.44 Bq/kg, respectively. Radium equivalent activity ranged from 47 to 100 Bq/kg. The mean of calculated values for the gamma index (I-gamma), external hazard index (H-ex), absorbed dose rate (ADR), annual gonadal dose rate (AGDE), annual effective dose rate (AEDE), and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were 0.61, 0.22, 40 nGy/h, 275 mu Sv/year, 49 mu Sv/year, and 170, respectively. In conclusion, the radiological parameters arising from the soil samples of Kosovo belong to the normal range of radionuclides, compared to those compiled by UNSCEAR from worldwide reports; therefore, health hazards are insignificant.

    Radiometric mapping and radiation dose assessments in sediments from Şavşat Black Lake, Turkey

    In this study, natural and artificial radioactivity concentrations in sediment samples taken from Şavşat Black Lake located on the Nature Park in Artvin were determined using a high purity germanium detector. It was determined that 238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs radioisotope concentrations in the sediment samples varied between 8.15 and 32.67, 5.83 and 33.08, 185.88 and 589.30, and 0.86 and 438.04 Bq kg?1, respectively. In order to evaluate the radiological hazards, some radiological parameters were calculated and compared with the values recommended by international organizations. The results showed that the sediments in the study area will not pose any health risk for the visitors of Şavşat Black Lake.
