Assessment of nutritional status, health perception, and adaptation to aging in older adults: A path analysis
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2025) Erkal, Emre; Erdem, Esma
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status, perceived health, and adaptation to aging of older adults and to examine the relationships among these variables. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included 386 older adults receiving care at the outpatient clinics of a public hospital in northeastern Turkey. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination, the Mini Nutritional Assessment–Short Form (MNA-SF), the Perception of Health Scale, and the Assessment Scale of Adaptation Difficulty for the Elderly. Statistical analyses included independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and path analysis. Results: The mean MNA-SF score was 11.52 ± 1.96; the mean health perception score was 48.07 ± 5.53; and the mean adaptation difficulty score was 0.99 ± 0.04. Health perception significantly predicted adaptation difficulty in older adults. MNA-SF scores varied significantly by age, body mass index (BMI), marital status, place of residence, and regular medication use (p < 0.01). Similarly, health perception scores differed significantly based on age, BMI, place of residence, educational level, income status, and the presence of chronic disease (p < 0.05). Adaptation difficulty scores also showed significant variation by age (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings revealed that 38.6% of participants were at risk of malnutrition, while 3.9% were malnourished. Although participants' overall health perception was moderate, their adaptation to aging was generally high. A more positive health perception was associated with better adaptation to aging. Targeted health and nutrition programs are recommended for high-risk groups, particularly older adults with lower socioeconomic status or those residing in rural areas.

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine stigma and attitudes in the relatives of patients with epilepsy and the factors affecting them. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 173 relatives of patients with epilepsy who were admitted to the neurology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Van Province, eastern Turkey, between April and December 2021. Individual information forms, the Epilepsy Stigma Scale Patient's Relative, and the Epilepsy Attitude Scale were used to collect the data. Results: The mean stigma score was 54.58 (standard deviation [SD] = 10.96), and the mean attitude score was 53.05 (SD = 8.14). A negative and significant correlation was found between stigma score and attitude score (r = -0.457, p < 0.001). It was found that stigma and attitude scores differed significantly in terms of education, hiding epilepsy, and the idea that epilepsy is related to spiritual thoughts (p < 0.05). Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was found that the relatives of patients with epilepsy were generally moderately stigmatized (64.8 %) and had moderate attitudes toward epilepsy. As the stigma increased in the participants, it was determined that they showed more negative attitudes toward epilepsy. The results indicated that relatives of patients with epilepsy who had one or more seizures per month experienced more stigma, and relatives of patients with epilepsy who did not take their medication regularly exhibited a more negative attitude toward epilepsy.

Purpose: This study was carried out to identify the attitudes toward epilepsy, health fatalism, and the factors affecting these in individuals living in Artvin in the northeast of Turkey. Method: This descriptive and cross-sectional study involved 1443 healthy individuals at a hospital in Artvin in northeastern Turkey between January and March 2020. An individual information form, an epilepsy attitude scale, and a religious health fatalism scale were used to assess their views. An independent sample t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score of participants' attitudes on epilepsy was 48.17 (standard deviation (SD) = 12.93), while the mean of their health fatalism score was 48.43 (SD = 17.41). There was a significant negative correlation between attitude scores and health fatalism (r = ?0.084, p = 0.001). Significant differences were found among attitude, health fatalism mean scores, and misconceptions associated with religion about epilepsy being a contagious, psychiatric, and incurable disease that should be hidden. Significant differences were additionally observed among attitude, health fatalism mean scores, and education, marital status, income, employment status, and presence of chronic disease (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was found that most individuals had moderate level attitude toward epilepsy and had high health fatalism. Individuals with a high degree of health fatalism were found to have more negative attitude toward epilepsy. Attitude was found to be more negative, and health fatalism was found to be higher in individuals with low education level, low-income level, who were married, who were unemployed, who had a chronic disease, and in those who thought epilepsy was a contagious, psychiatric, and incurable disease associated with religion that should be hidden. Implications: It is recommended that health professionals organize training programs to increase public understanding of epilepsy, improving individual attitudes toward the condition, and minimizing health fatalism

(W.B. Saunders Ltd, 2025) Erkal, Emre
Objective: This study determined the mediating role of knowledge about epilepsy in the relationship between attitudes toward epilepsy and health literacy in Turkey. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in Turkey with 4,393 participants. The sociodemographic form, Epilepsy Attitude Scale, Epilepsy Knowledge Scale, and Health Literacy Scale were used for data collection. Results: The participants’ mean attitude score was 57.05 ± 10.15, mean knowledge score was 7.70 ± 4.22, and mean health literacy score was 51.95 ± 9.61. Health literacy scores significantly predicted attitude (β = 0.498) and knowledge (β = 0.382) scores (p < 0.05). Knowledge scores significantly predicted attitude scores (β = 0.529; p < 0.05). However, health literacy (β = 0.346) and knowledge scores (β = 0.397) together significantly predicted attitude scores (p < 0.05). The knowledge score has a mediating role between health literacy and attitude score (β = 0.152; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Individuals had relatively positive attitudes toward epilepsy and moderate levels of knowledge and health literacy. Health literacy positively affected knowledge and attitude towards epilepsy. However, knowledge about epilepsy also positively affected attitude. Additionally, health literacy and knowledge of epilepsy together positively affected attitudes toward epilepsy. Knowledge about epilepsy mediated the relationship between health literacy and attitude toward epilepsy. In this context, it is recommended that programs to raise awareness and improve health literacy be organized, social sensitivity should be increased, and additional epilepsy research should be conducted.
