Öğe Analysis of mental health symptoms and insomnia levels of intensive care nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic with a structural equation model(Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2021) Kandemir, Didem; Temiz, Zeynep; Özhanlı, Yasemin; Erdoğan, Hatice; Kanbay, YalçınBackground: Faced with this critical situation and directly involved in the treatment and care of COVID-19 patients, front-line healthcare workers are at high risk in terms of mental health symptoms. Aims and Objectives: To determine the stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia levels of intensive care nurses during the pandemic with a structural equation model. Design: A multi-site survey study. Methods: The study was performed with 194 nurses working in the intensive care units of five hospitals in Istanbul in July 2020. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress-21 Scale and Insomnia Severity Index electronically. The data were evaluated with descriptive statistics in SPSS package program. In order to test the structural model and hypotheses of the research, path analysis was performed with LISREL statistical software program. A validation study for the suitability of these scales to the study sample was done by the researchers using the confirmatory factor analysis method. The study conforms to the TREND checklist. Results: In this study, the majority of the intensive care nurses had moderate to extremely severe depression (65.5%), anxiety (58.3%) and stress (72.3%) scores; in addition, 39.7% of the nurses experienced moderate or severe insomnia. Within the framework of a structural model; the effects of stress, anxiety and insomnia on depression, which is the dependent variable, were found to be statistically significant (p <.001). Conclusions: It was found that the majority of the intensive care nurses fighting COVID-19 on the front-line experienced stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia at levels ranging from moderate to extremely severe; in addition, it was determined that there is a positive relationship between stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression. Relevance to clinical practice: This study, in which we have determined the mental health symptoms and insomnia levels of intensive care nurses, who are in the front-line during the COVID-19 pandemic, constitutes the scientific basis for the effective coping strategies that the authorities will take in this subject.Öğe Content and quality of online videos about ostomy pouch changes: a descriptive study(NLM (Medline), 2022) Temiz, Zeynep; Kandemir, DidemBACKGROUND: Many health-related videos are available online. One type of health-related video is related to stoma pouch change. However, a system to evaluate the quality and content of these videos is lacking. PURPOSE: To evaluate the content and quality of YouTube videos on colostomy pouch change. METHODS: A descriptive study was carried out by searching for videos on March 15, 2021, using the key words "colostomy care," "colostomy bag/pouch change," and "ostomy bag/pouch change." A 5-point Global Quality Scale was used to evaluate the quality of the videos, and a 10-point scale was used to evaluate the content. The videos were classified as "useful" or "useless" according to their content and quality scores. RESULTS: A total of 128 videos were found; 94 videos met the criteria and were included in the study. The content of the 94 videos was examined by 2 independent researchers. The overall content score of the videos was 8.24 ± 1.56, and the overall quality score was 3.14 ± 0.97. A total of 66 (70.21%) videos were useful, and 28 (29.79%) videos were useless. The mean scores of useful videos for content (9.09 ± 0.83) and the average Global Quality Scale scores (3.53 ± 0.76) were significantly higher than those of useless videos (6.17 ± 0.90 and 2.25 ± 0.75, respectively; (P < .05). The results showed that 57.6% of the useful videos were uploaded by universities, professional organizations, and health care professionals, and 67.9% of the useless videos were uploaded by patients; the difference was statistically significant (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Results indicated that the majority of online videos evaluated were accurate. Most of these videos were uploaded by universities, professional organizations, health care professionals, or medical advertisers. Although there were many limitations to this study, the authors suggest that health care professionals can direct their patients to these sources after hospital discharge. However, future studies are needed..Öğe Determination of ıncidence and risk factors of perioperative pressure ınjury in surgical patients: a descriptive, prospective, and comparative study(Türkiye Klinikleri Yayınevi, 2022) Kandemir, Didem; Temiz, Zeynep; Aydın, Atiye; Yayla, Fatma; Özhanlı, Yasemin; Ayoğlu, TulühaObjective: This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors of perioperative pressure injury (PI) in surgical patients. Material and Methods: This descriptive, prospective, and comparative study was conducted with 101 patients who underwent general surgery in a training and research hospital in İstanbul between September 2018 and June 2019. Data were collected using the “Patient Data Form,” the “Braden Scale,” and the “International Pressure Injury Classification System.” Data were analyzed with parametric and nonparametric tests using the SPSS package program. The statistical significance level was taken as p<0.05. The necessary institutional and ethics committee permission was obtained to conduct the study. Results: In this study, it was observed that the incidence of perioperative PI was 12.9% (13/101) in surgical patients, and most developed after pancreaticoduodenectomy (38.5%). Preoperative hemoglobin and serum albumin levels, surgical time longer than 185 minutes, and intraoperative hypotensive episodes were found to be determinant risk factors in the development of PI (p<0.01). Conclusion: Surgical nurses should carefully evaluate individual and surgery-related risk factors and implement evidence-based interventions in the prevention of pressure injuries.Öğe The effect of listening to the sound of running water on pain and anxiety experienced during cannulation by hemodialysis patients: A randomized, controlled, open-label study(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2024) Sayılan, Samet; Aydın Sayılan, Aylin; Temiz, Zeynep; Kandemir, DidemIntroduction: This study was conducted to determine the effect of the sound of running water, which we had not previously encountered being used in dialysis patients, on invasive pain and anxiety experienced during cannulation. Methods: The research was conducted as a randomized, controlled study. A descriptive form, a VAS pain scale, and state–trait anxiety scales were used as a data collection form. The data were analyzed on SPSS version 22.00 for Windows software. The independent groups t-test was applied to compare descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, number, and percentage in independent groups, while categorical data were compared using the chi-square test. The effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable was tested using linear regression analysis. p values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The study was completed with 32 experimental and 33 control group patients. There was no significant difference in pre-intervention pain and anxiety between the groups. The pain levels of the patients after the first and 12th cannulations were significantly lower in the experimental group (p < 0.05). State and trait anxiety levels were also significantly lower in the experimental group at the 12th session (p < 0.05). Conclusion: We conclude that the sound of running water has a significant positive effect on pain and anxiety experienced during cannulation by dialysis patients. We recommend that clinicians apply such a simple method as listening to the sound of running water for reducing pain and anxiety during invasive procedures.Öğe Operating room nurses’ knowledge of and attitudes about pressure injury prevention: a descriptive cross-sectional study(2022) Kandemir, Didem; Özhanlı, Yasemin; Erdoğan, Hatice; Temiz, ZeynepBACKGROUND: Understanding nurses’ knowledge and attitudes might be important in influencing their behaviors of complying with pressure injury prevention measures in the operating room. PURPOSE: The aim of this descriptive and cross-sectional study was to determine operating room nurses’ knowledge and attitudes about pressure injury prevention. METHODS: This study was performed with 174 nurses working in the operating rooms of 5 hospitals in Istanbul between July and October 2020. The data were collected with the Modified Pieper Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test-MPPUKT and Attitude Towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument-APuP and analyzed with parametric and nonparametric tests using the SPSS 20.0 package program. The statistical significance level was accepted as P < .05. RESULTS: The total mean score of the MPPUKT of the operating room nurses was 32.72 ± 6.65, and the knowledge level of only 57.5% of the nurses was considered sufficient (MPPUKT score ? 70%); the total mean score of the APuP was 44.67 ± 3.10, and almost all (94.8%) had a satisfactory attitude (?75%). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between the knowledge and attitudes of the operating room nurses about pressure injury prevention (P = .000). CONCLUSION: This study has shown that the knowledge level of the operating room nurses was weak and their attitudes were satisfactory. It is recommended to improve the knowledge and attitudes of operating room nurses to prevent pressure injuries through effective in-service training programs. Pressure injury is defined as localized damage to the skin or deep tissues, usually on a bony prominence or in association with a medical or other devices.1 Any pressure injury that develops within 48 to 72 hours intra-, inter-, or postoperatively in a patient undergoing surgical intervention is described as a perioperative pressure injury, and the anatomical position is associated with the operating position.2-4 The incidence of perioperative pressure injuries ranges from 1.3% to 51%, and this rate constitutes 45% of all hospital-acquired pressure injuries.3,5,6 Pressure injury is an important indicator of international health care quality.1,3,7 These injuries are usually difficult to heal, painful, negatively affect the health-related quality of life of the individual,7-9 and increase length of hospital stay and health care costs.7,10 Thus, the ideal is to prevent the development of pressure injury4; diagnosis at its earliest stage is essential to allow planning for cost-effective care.9 Although a multidisciplinary team approach plays a key role in preventing pressure injury, nurses are at the forefront of this effort in most healthcare settings.9,11 Monitoring and maintaining skin integrity and preventing skin damage is the primary responsibility of the nurse.7,8,10 In this context, to provide safe and quality nursing care, nurses should routinely evaluate the surgical patient’s skin for the presence of pressure injury during the perioperative period.4 However, pressure injury prevention requires risk assessment that involves a complex interaction of care planning, implementation, and evaluation. To be successful, nurses must be aware of the risk factors associated with the development of pressure injury. In addition, the relevant elements of pressure injury prevention guidelines should be followed after the individual has been evaluated.8,9,12 In the literature, it is recommended to regularly evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals regarding pressure injury prevention and management to facilitate compliance with clinical guidelines and to identify potential barriers and facilitators when initiating quality improvement initiatives.13 Evaluation of nurses’ knowledge and attitudes about pressure injury prevention contributes to the identification of training needs, opportunities to improve practice and priorities, and helps develop organization-specific interventions.10,13 The relationship between knowledge, attitude, and practice is both complex and not fully understood. In addition, the literature states that there is a gap between nurses’ knowledge and evidence-based practices in pressure injury prevention.10 Understanding nurses’ knowledge and attitudes may be important in influencing the behavior of complying with pressure injury prevention measures that directly lead to pressure injury preventative practices in the operating room.4 However, although there are a few studies2,14,15 on surgical nurses in the literature, there is only one study4 examining the knowledge and attitudes of operating room nurses about pressure injury prevention. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine operating room nurses’ knowledge and attitudes about pressure injury prevention. Research questions were as follows: 1) What is operating room nurses’ knowledge level about pressure injury prevention? 2) What are operating room nurses’ attitudes about pressure injury prevention? 3) Is there a relationship between knowledge and attitudes about pressure injury prevention?Öğe Perioperative management of the suspected/confirmed COVID-19 patient(AVES, 2021) Kandemir, Didem; Temiz, ZeynepIn December 2019, several cases of pneumonia of unknown etiology emerged in Wuhan, China, and it spread worldwide, causing great concern. This disease was named Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization and declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Secondary transmission mainly occurs through contact with contaminated respiratory droplets or aerosolized virion-containing particles, and the virus is found in all body fluids such as the gastrointestinal tract, blood, saliva, and urine, extending the potential transmission routes, health during treatment, and care of suspected/confirmed COVID-19 patients. It worries that health workers may be widely contaminated. Therefore, it is very important that the surgical team is fully aware of the current situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, determines appropriate strategies against occupational exposure risk, and takes protective measures. Based on this, this review discussed with the aim of presenting a plan for the response of general surgery clinics to the current pandemic crisis and other pandemic events of similar magnitude, examining effective management strategies before, during, and after surgery of suspected/confirmed COVID-19 patients in the light of the literature, and suggesting measures that will help minimize risk.Öğe The mediating role of mammography self-efficacy in the effect of cancer attitudes on fear of breast cancer in women(Elsevier Inc., 2025) Kandemir, Didem; Yüksel, Serpil; Kanbay, Yalçın; Temiz, Zeynep; Altun Uğras, Gülay; Akyolcu, NerimanObjectives: To determine the relationship between the attitudes toward cancer and the fear of breast cancer of women aged 40 to 69 and to examine the mediating role of mammography self-efficacy in this relationship. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted involving 551 women between May and October 2023. Data were collected using the “Champion Breast Cancer Fear Scale,” “Cancer Measuring Attitudes Survey,” and “Mammography Self-Efficacy Scale.” Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 26.0, Process Macro program, and AMOS 24 package program. Results: The effect of attitude toward cancer on mammography self-efficacy, which is a mediating variable, was found to be negative and significant (P <.001). It was determined that the effect of mammography self-efficacy on the outcome variable, fear of breast cancer, was positive and significant. Furthermore, the direct effect of attitude toward cancer on the outcome variable, fear of breast cancer, was positive and significant (P <.05). Additionally, mammography self-efficacy was found to mediate the relationship between cancer-related attitudes and fear of breast cancer. Conclusions: This study has indicated that as women's negative attitudes toward cancer increase, their mammography self-efficacy levels decrease; that as breast cancer fears increase, mammography self-efficacy levels increase, and that as negative attitudes toward cancer increase, breast cancer fears increase. Additionally, the mediating role of the mammography self-efficacy variable in the relationship between attitude toward cancer and fear of breast cancer was found to have a low-magnitude effect. Implications for Nursing Practice: These results provide a valuable framework for developing educational interventions aimed at improving early diagnosis behaviors and emphasizing the importance of activating programs aimed at increasing self-efficacy and reducing barriers to access to mammography, especially in women with low socio-economic levels.Öğe YouTube as a source of information on breast cancer-related lymphedema exercises: A content, quality, and reliability analysis(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2024) Kandemir, Didem; Temiz, Zeynep; Aydın Sayılan, AylinThis descriptive study aimed to determine the content, quality, and reliability of YouTube videos on breast cancer-related lymphedema exercises. A total of 127 videos were independently assessed, with 103 of them categorized as either informative or misleading content groups. The content (mean score: 4.07 ± 2.29) and quality (mean score: 3.15 ± 1.46) of videos concerning lymphedema exercises were moderate, while reliability (mean score: 2.27 ± 1.64) was low. Among the 103 videos categorized using the content checklist, Global Quality Scale, and DISCERN reliability instrument, 57.3% (n = 59) were informative, and 42.7% (n = 44) had misleading information. The mean scores of the content, quality, and reliability of the informative content videos were substantially higher than the misleading content videos, and of videos uploaded by universities/professional organizations/health care professionals/medical advertisements were higher than the videos uploaded by other sources. Through this study, the researchers have unveiled that the content and quality levels of YouTube videos in lymphedema exercises were moderate, and the reliability level was low.
