Öğe An evaluation of the factors affecting risk management processes in the maritime sector(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Yıldırım, Umut; Toygar, ArdaÖğe An intuitionistic fuzzy-based model for performance evaluation of EcoPorts(Elsevier Ltd, 2023) Yalçın, Galip Cihan; Kara, Karahan; Toygar, Arda; Simic, Vladimir; Pamucar, Dragan; Köleoğlu, NilayThe EcoPort performance level serves as a basic indicator to determine the environmental status of a port and its achievement of certification standards. The European Sea Ports Organization has defined ten essential EcoPort criteria that contribute significantly to the assessment of EcoPort performance. The primary motivation for this study is to determine the importance of the criteria from the perspective of academics and chief officers, as well as to evaluate the EcoPort performance of six port authorities that comply with three basic certification standards for environmental management systems. The research methodology and application are conducted in four phases. In the first phase, experts, criteria, and alternative ports are identified. In the second phase, the importance levels of experts are determined using neutrosophic sets, while the criteria are weighted using the intuitionistic fuzzy weighting averaging operator. In the third phase, the alternative ranking order method accounting for two-step normalization (AROMAN) based on the intuitionistic fuzzy sets is introduced to evaluate the EcoPort performance of the ports. In the fourth phase, the results are supported by sensitivity analysis scenarios. The research results identified air pollution as the most critical criterion, while the Valencia Port Authority secured the highest rank in terms of EcoPort performance. Ultimately, this research contributes to the literature by developing and applying the new IF-AROMAN method for EcoPort performance evaluation.Öğe Artificial intelligence in port environmental management: A strategic analysis(ORDU ÜNİVERSİTESİ, 2025) Önal, Esma; Toygar, Arda; Tehci, AliMaritime activities play a crucial role in global trade. However, seaports cause various environmental problems, particularly pollution in coastal and urban areas. Artificial intelligence (AI) and its subfields, machine learning and deep learning have emerged as promising tools for addressing these problems, garnering increasing interest within the maritime sector. Nevertheless, existing studies in literature often focus on a limited scope and fail to incorporate environmental priorities in seaport operations. This study explored the potential of AI and its subfields to enhance resilience to environmental problems posed by operational activities in seaports. Ten port environmental priorities from the ESPO’s report were included as environmental indicators. The study was conducted in two phases. The first phase involved a systematic literature review of 117 sources from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. In line with the systematic analysis, the second phase was evaluated using a SWOT analysis. Thereafter, a series of strategic recommendations were formulated on the based on an analysis of both internal and external factors. The study provided twelve strategic recommendations for enhancing current practices. AI and its subfields has the potential to become a strategic tool for achieving seaport sustainability goals that align with environmental priorities.Öğe Assessing the stochastic behavior of fishing grounds footprint of top ten fishing countries(Elsevier B.V., 2023) Adalı, Zafer; Toygar, ArdaLife on the ocean floor needs a long time to reproduce and thrive. If consumption habits continue as they are, it is likely that more than one world's resources will be needed in the near future to meet the needs of a growing population. The fishing grounds footprint (FGF) is an important environmental indicator because it reflects the water area required for marine products produced. Moreover, reformative policies and urgent actions related to the FGF have been one of the leading priorities of governments to protect biodiversity, provide sustainability of fisheries and diminish water pollution. Therefore, this study employed the FGF per capita of the 10 countries producing and catching the most fish. Accordingly, the stochastic behaviors of the FGF of these countries were examined using three areas involving the traditional unit root test (ADF, KPSS, and PP), the residual augmented ADF unit root tests (RALS-ADF), and the Fourier unit root tests (FKPSS, FADF, and FFFFF-DF). The results will be an important resource for policymakers to develop inclusive strategies and policies for marine animals and ecological life.Öğe The changing structure of international trade: An evaluation of the liner shipping industry(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Toygar, Arda; Yıldırım, UmutThe emergence of COVID- 19 in the Republic of China, known as the worldwide production center, caused the rapid spread of its negative effects on international trade. But the real break came when the virus reached the size of a pandemic. The expansion of the measures taken within the scope of the virus in many countries of the world caused huge decreases in global trade volumes, creating a shock effect. Each crisis, which has caused shrinkage in global trade volumes from past to present, has also caused great losses in the liner shipping industry. After the 2008 financial crisis, which caused great destruction in international trade, the commercial activities of many container shipping companies stopped their activities. In the COVID- 19 period, which has similar features to the financial crisis, container shipping companies have developed many strategies to adapt to possible crises. For this reason, the study includes the evaluation of the strategies developed by container shipping companies and the implications for the results of these strategies.Öğe Compensation effect of wages on decent work: A study on seafarers attitudes(Elsevier Ltd, 2022) Yıldırım, Umut; Toygar, Arda; Çolakoğlu, CavitThe poor working conditions of the maritime profession have a negative impact on the physical and mental health of seafarers. The result of this causes a shortage of qualified seafarers. Many studies in the literature propose a high-paying employment strategy to overcome this shortage. However, only higher salaries cannot guarantee decent work conditions; other basic governing principles and rights within the working life have critical roles also. In this context, solely evaluating the effects of salary would fail to completely identify the underlying problem and prevent generalization of the study results to all seafarers. In this study, the dimensions of the Decent Work Scale (DWS) were included to examine the problem in a comprehensive manner. This was coupled by examination of the effects of the adequate compensation (AC) attitudes of the participating seafarers, all of whom were qualified according to the requirements of the flag state and working on merchant ships, on their decent work perceptions. The results indicated that the seafarers’ AC attitudes had an impact on their perceptions of some dimensions of DWS as safe conditions, access to healthcare, rest periods, and value.Öğe Effects of power distance on organizational commitment: a study on maritime faculty students(Galenos Yayıncılık, 2022) Yıldırım, Umut; Toygar, Arda; Tuncel, Ahmet LütfiThis study investigates the effect of power distance on the organizational commitment of maritime faculty students. The hypotheses developed in this context were analyzed using the structural equation modeling method based on data collected from 406 participants. The results from one-dimensional (1D) evaluation indicated that organizational power distance had a positive impact on the organizational commitment levels of maritime faculty students. However, there are several studies in the literature that show that this effect may lead to inconsistent results in 1D examination. These conflicting results necessitate a multidimensional analysis of the research. Evaluation of the sub-dimensions included in the study revealed that: (1) acceptance of power had positive effects on calculative and moral commitment, (2) justification of power on moral commitment, and (3) acquiescence of power on calculative, alienative, and moral commitment.Öğe Examining the effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on global supply chains(IGI Global, 2023) Toygar, Arda; Yıldırım, UmutConflicts cause significant losses of life and property, create environmental and socio-cultural changes, and lead to significant disruptions in global supply chains. The Russia-Ukraine conflict, occurring on Ukrainian territory, is still ongoing and its consequences are uncertain. This bottleneck in global food and energy supply, large increases in the costs of basic logistics services, such as international transportation and warehousing, come to the fore as the first consequences of the conflict. These developments prevent countries in many distinct parts of the world from reaching vital resources, such as food and energy. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on global supply chains. In this context, the relevant literature, sectoral publications, and reports from international authorities related to global supply chains were examined in a conceptual framework. The results of the study suggest that the conflict poses significant problems that will adversely affect global supply chains.Öğe Fear of COVID-19 in seafarers: Association with psychological distress(Galenos Publishing House, 2023) Toygar, Arda; Yıldırım, Umutince its inception, the coronavirus pandemic has caused serious social, economic, and health problems around the world. Seafarers have been identified as key workers in mitigating the negative impact of the coronavirus on global trade and ensuring the delivery of medical and hygiene supplies to regions in need. However, the complete closure policies implemented by certain countries have led to prolonged periods on board for seafarers with expired contracts and economic hardship for those unable to join new assignments. Seafarers who spend long periods on board a ship must deal with issues that may affect their psychological state. Therefore, it is important to identify the factors that cause seafarers to experience psychological distress and to develop relevant strategies to address them. The aim of this study was to determine the association between seafarers’ fear of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and psychological distress including symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. The questionnaire used the fear of COVID-19 Scale and the expression, Anxiety and Stress Scale), which have strong psychometric properties. Data were collected from 425 qualified seafarers working on international merchant ships and analyzed by structural equation modeling using AMOS-24. The results indicate that seafarers’ fear of COVID-19 is positively associated with symptoms of anxiety and stress but not with depression. Maritime companies, sectoral organizations, and policymakers should collaborate to reduce these associations among seafarers. A unified management approach improved access to health services, and regular mental health assessments can be effective solutions.Öğe In-depth exploration of challenges faced by women in the Turkish maritime industry: A qualitative study(IOS Press BV, 2024) Yıldırım, Umut; Nart, Senem; Akar, Sevda; Sarıalioğlu, Songül; Toygar, Arda; Vardar, Burak; Coşkun Kaya, Sultan; Sarı, MustafaBACKGROUND: Women are underrepresented in the maritime industry compared to men. This sector continues to perpetuate gender discrimination and stereotypes, often overlooking women's physical competence. OBJECTIVE: To explore the multi-faceted challenges faced by Turkish female officers, unveiling the different dimensions of these challenges, and providing a comprehensive understanding of their experiences. METHODS: In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 Turkish female officers actively working on seagoing vessels. The data were analyzed using MAXQDA software. RESULTS: The challenges faced by female officers were examined using content analysis. A total of 50 different codes were identified within 10 categories. The categories are gender inequality, violence, restriction of freedom, work-family conflict, mental health, physical differences, unsafe living space, insufficient communication with management, lack of psychometric testing and limited access to health services. CONCLUSION: By shedding light on the unique obstacles faced by female officers in Turkey, this study enhances our understanding of the underlying challenges and lays the groundwork for the implementation of effective policies and practices that promote the empowerment of women in the maritime industry.Öğe Investigation of empty container shortage based on SWARA-ARAS methods in the COVID-19 era(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Toygar, Arda; Yıldırım, Umut; İnegöl, Gani MustafaA shortage of empty containers has become a global crisis with more devastating effects than during previous periods when combined with various problems arising from the COVID-19, such as an increase in an imbalance of global trade between supply and demand, a decrease in the workforce, and restrictions by countries or regional quarantine practices. The absence of empty containers in regions where they are needed slows down industrial activities and locks the global supply networks, necessitating the use of alternative methods that are inefficient. Although this shortage causes many disruptions in global trade, solutions to the issue have not been studied in detail. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the issues caused by the shortage of empty containers and to rank the appropriate solutions. Four main criteria and sixteen subcategories used to define the issues, as well as a multi criteria decision model comprising five criteria for the solutions, were proposed based on information from the literature, sectorial publications, and expert opinions. The issues’ weighted order of importance in our proposed model was calculated using the SWARA (Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis) method; solutions were ranked using the ARAS (Additive Ratio Assessment) method. The results of the study revealed that the issues were ranked in importance as cost increases, uncertainty in the supply chain, volume loss, and increases in blank sailing announcements. Appropriate solutions were ranked as booking guarantee applications and information communication technologies, using shipper-owned containers, inducement calls, and E2E (end to end) delivery services.Öğe The psychological effect of compensation on decent work dimensions: a research on public and private school teachers in Turkey(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2021) Çolakoğlu, Cavit; Toygar, ArdaPurpose: The purpose of this work is to examine the psychological impact of adequate compensation, which is one of the dimensions of Decent Work Scale (DWS) evaluated within the psychology of work theory (PWT), on other dimensions of DWS in teachers working in public and private schools in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, DWS developed by Duffy et al. was used. In total, 175 private school teachers and 216 public school teachers participated in the study. The data were analyzed with LISREL 8.7 and SPSS 23.0 package programs. Findings: Considering the structural equation model formed by the sub-dimensions of the DWS and the path diagrams related to the model, it was seen that the “adequate compensation” dimension made a significant difference in “access to health services” on both public and private school teachers. In private school teachers, there is a significant relationship between the dimension of adequate compensation and “access to healthcare”, “physically and interpersonally safe working conditions”, “free time and rest” and “organizational values that complement family and social values”. However, a significant relationship was not found between the variables other than “access to healthcare” in public school teachers. According to the results of the “Independent Sample T-Test”, there is a significant mean difference between the perceptions of teachers working in public and private schools. When this difference is examined, it was seen that teachers working in public schools have a higher level of good job perception than teachers working in private schools. Research limitations/implications: DWS is a newly developed scale and has been used in a limited number of studies. It is a scale open to be developed and used with different sample groups. Originality/value: Application of DWS to teachers working in Turkey is one of the fundamental features that distinguish this study from other studies in this area. In addition, the evaluation of the psychological effects of the adequate compensation dimension, which is an important study factor, on the other dimensions of DWS adds originality to the study. It is predicted that this research will fill the deficiency in the relevant literature.Öğe Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Decent Work Questionnaire and its effect on job satisfaction(IOS Press BV, 2024) Çolakoǧlu, Cavit; Selek Öz, Cihan; Toygar, ArdaBACKGROUND: Work to develop a universal tool for the psychological evaluation and measurement of decent work is relatively new. In addition, the Decent Work Questionnaire, which evaluates decent work using a psychological approach, has not yet been adapted and validated in the Turkish sample group. OBJECTIVE: To adapt and validate the Turkish version of the Decent Work Questionnaire and to evaluate the effect of decent work on the job satisfaction among knowledge workers. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 906 knowledge workers. In the process of adapting and validating the Decent Work Questionnaire, the structural validity, internal consistency, convergent validity, divergent validity, and compatibility of the sample group data were tested. The effect of decent work on job satisfaction of knowledge workers was examined using structural equation modeling. RESULTS: The Decent Work Questionnaire was validated in the Turkish sample. The results showed that the reliability coefficients and dimensions of the Decent Work Questionnaire were highly satisfactory and consistent with the scale developers' study. According to another result of the study, decent work was found to have a significant and positive effect on Turkish knowledge workers' job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: This study will fill gaps in the literature and will also contribute to the evaluation of decent work in all areas of the labor market, identifying its shortcomings and contributing to the development of effective human resource policies.Öğe A quantitative study on the mental health of Turkish seafarers(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2022) Kınalı, Harun; Yıldırım, Ümit; Toygar, ArdaPhysically and mentally healthy seafarers with professional knowledge and skills are needed for maritime transportation to be safe and sustainable. Mental problems experienced by seafarers can lead to negative consequences, such as bullying, substance dependency, assault, murder and suicide. Accordingly, this study examined the effects of differences between the socio-demographic characteristics of Turkish seafarers on their depression, which is an important criterion for determining mental disorders. Data collected from 403 participants through quantitative research methods were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 and AMOS version 23.0. Although periodic physical and mental health checks are performed on seafarers, it was found from the analysis results that 33.2% of Turkish seafarers experience mental issues. Moreover, the study determined that the socio-demographic characteristics of seafarers made some differences in their depression levels.Öğe Requirements of digital management in the global supply chain: The case of container logistics(Peter Lang AG, 2021) Toygar, Arda; Nart, SenemÖğe Sustainable fisheries and the conservation of marine resources: A stochastic analysis of the fishery balance of African countries(Elsevier GmbH, 2024) Adalı, Zafer; Toygar, Arda; Karataş, Ayyüce Memiş; Yıldırım, UmutThe implementation of environmental management strategies is essential for the adoption of sustainable fishing practices and the conservation of marine resources. Management strategies can be developed by identifying common issues affecting fisheries and adopting suitable policies. This study examines the convergence hypothesis of the ecological balance of fisheries in 20 African countries from 1961 to 2018. In addition to the convergence hypothesis, the univariate stochastic properties of fishery balance are also examined. Within this context, second-generation panel unit root tests ignoring or considering the structural breaks are performed. The convergence hypothesis is tested for 20 African countries. This study will contribute to the development of standard, reliable, effective marine policies for fisheries and marine sustainability in African countries, bringing long-term benefits to the fisheries sector and marine ecosystems.Öğe Understanding the impact of global challenges on container shipping: A qualitative study in the COVID-19 era(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Toygar, Arda; Yıldırım, Umut; Nart, SenemGlobal challenges in container shipping can cause periodic disruptions and result in volumetric losses in supply chain operations, which can restrict commercial mobility. Throughout history, major disruptions have been the most significant drivers of change and progress. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the impact of these challenges to develop solutions. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of global challenges that have occurred in the COVID-19 era on container shipping. Qualitative research methods were used to form a study group of twenty-seven industry representatives. The challenges were conceptualized into four main themes. The results of the study showed that the strategic decision areas prioritized include prolongation of the transport time, port congestion, increased shipping cost, and global scale impact. This study allows the impact of global challenges on container shipping to be conceptualized and to identify criteria for decision-making methods.Öğe Work-family conflict and work alienation among seafarers: The mediating role of emotional exhaustion(Elsevier Ltd, 2023) Toygar, Arda; Nart, Senem; Yıldırım, UmutWorking on ships in challenging conditions and with limited social contact, seafarers are separated from their families for much of the year. Moreover, the recent global crises have restricted seafarers’ connections with the shore. The necessity to work away from family can cause emotional exhaustion and work alienation among seafarers. Today, when the demand for maritime transportation has reached the highest levels, it is important to identify the factors that lead to the alienation of seafarers, who are the building blocks of the sector in the profession. Therefore, this study investigated the mediating role of emotional exhaustion in the association between work-family conflict and work alienation among seafarers. The participants of this study were 360 seafarers. The researchers used structural equation modeling to analyze the proposed hypotheses. The results of the mediation model indicated a significant and positive association between work-family conflict and work alienation, with emotional exhaustion partially mediating this association. Therefore, the study found that higher levels of work-family conflict were associated with higher levels of emotional exhaustion and work alienation. The results provide a different perspective on the challenges faced by seafarers and have practical implications.
