Bu çalışmada, kitlesel olaylarda kullanılmak üzere belirlenmiş ve kabul edilmiş, “Simple Triage And Rapid Treatment” sözcüklerinin baş harflerinden oluşturulmuş START skalası hakkında bilgi verilmesi amaçlanmıştır.Öğe Challenges and technological requirements in landslide disaster search and rescue efforts: Türkiye Artvin landslide case study(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Usta, Galip; Gündüz, Fatma; Atalay, Ezgi; Torpuş, KemalDear Editor, Natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and rockfalls occur frequently in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye. As a result of the landslide in Artvin province on August 12, 2024, deaths occurred, and the international transportation route was closed. Artvin is a province with a high risk of landslide disasters. The main reasons for this situation include the fact that the region is sloped and exposed to too much rain. Landslides occurring in Artvin frequently cause various damages and loss of life. A landslide disaster occurred on August 12, 2024 at 03:15 in the Kıyıcık area of the Arhavi district of Artvin province. Due to the landslide, the Artvin-Rize highway, which is an international road, was closed to traffic in both directions. The landslide that occurred at the exit of the Kıyıcık tunnel in the Arhavi district caused the interruption of two-way transportation. It is said that 100 000 tons of soil mass moved in the area where the disaster occurred. At the same time, it has been determined that the risk of landslides continues in the region, and small slides occurred during the intervention works. In the success of search and rescue efforts, reaching the victim on time and starting the work immediately is an important factor. For this reason, it was reported that the relevant teams started working immediately to open the access road that was closed to traffic. By examining the PTS (License Plate Recognition System) records, it was determined that a vehicle entered the tunnel, but there were no exit images. Following this detection, search efforts were carried out in large quantities of soil. It has been determined that in detecting the vehicle buried under landslide, searches were conducted using new generation search devices with sensors, supported by the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration. Additionally, searches were conducted using drone systems and the Coast Guard teams searched from the sea. After the sensor search device detected the vehicle under the landslide, rescue efforts were carried out. Following search and rescue activities, the vehicle wreckage under landslide was reached and it was determined that 4 people had died.Öğe The effect of disaster preparedness literacy on individual disaster resilience(Cambridge University Press, 2024) Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Çınar Özbay, Sevil; Kanbay, YalçınThis study aimed to examine the effect of disaster preparedness literacy on individual disaster resilience and related factors. Results Women who had previously experienced a disaster were found to have higher scores on the strength/advocacy, threat, anxiety, and disaster risk perception scale than those who had not. A moderate positive correlation was found between the increase in women's perceptions of psychological power and their perceptions of threat, controllability, anxiety levels, and disaster risk perceptions, while a low negative correlation was found with their perceptions of fatalism. Conclusions It was concluded that women's psychological strength affects disaster risk perception. Psychological empowerment of women is thought to be important in ensuring disaster resilience.Öğe Evaluation of the opinions of volunteers involved in disaster on the use of social media(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Berkircan, EsraObjective The aim was to deeply examine the opinions of volunteers who took part in the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred in Türkiye on February 6, 2023, regarding the use of social media during the disaster period. Methods The study was designed as qualitative research. Because it was planned to examine the participant experiences in depth, the phenomenological design was employed in the study. Study data were collected from individuals who had earthquake experience through a semi-structured interview form between May 2023 and July 2023. Results In line with the data obtained, 2 themes were created: social media content and communication analysis and social media impact analysis and results. It was found that for information seeking, information sharing, or interaction during disasters, Twitter (X), Instagram, and WhatsApp were the most preferred social media platforms, respectively. Participants mentioned that posts related to disaster during times of disasters have an impact on their emotions. It was determined that the proper use and correct management of social media tools in times of earthquakes affect coordination and relief efforts. Conclusions It was concluded that the type of content shared during earthquake times affects both disaster victims and other individuals of the society positively or negatively.Öğe Evalution of volunteer motivations: Kahramanmaraş centered earthquakes(Ankara University, 2025) Usta, Galip; Torpuş, Kemal; Bekircan, EsraThis study aims to evaluate the motivation of volunteers in Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes in Türkiye and to provide a framework for increasing the well-being of volunteers and the sustainability of volunteerism. This research is cross-sectional and descriptive. The study's participants were volunteers who were at least eighteen years old and who had participated in the February 6, 2023, earthquakes in Türkiye. Sociodemographic form and volunteer motivation inventory were used as data collection tools. 414 volunteers who freely engaged in the earthquake disaster completed the data gathering instruments, and agreed to participate in the study made it complete. This study assessed volunteer motivation, which is an important source of social capital during disasters, according to a number of criteria. One of the scale's sub-dimensions, reciprocity scores, was shown to have a statistically significant gender difference. People who had encountered a calamity scored lower than those who had not, according to this study. Volunteer motivation was found to be impacted by disaster training. The reciprocity score, one of the scale's sub-dimensions, was shown to be correlated with the people's income levels. Individuals with low income levels demonstrated lower reciprocity scores than those with medium income levels, according to the findings. As a result of this study's findings, initiatives designed to encourage volunteerism in times of disaster should take into consideration factors like gender, financial level, and prior experience with disasters. It is advised to carry out more research using a mixed method design in order to assess other factors influencing volunteer motivation.Öğe Examination of factors associated with earthquake fear and coping strategies used(İnönü Üniversitesi, 2024) Usta, Galip; Torpuş, Kemal; Kanbay, Yalçın; Çınar Özbay, SevilThis study aimed to examine the factors associated with earthquake fear and coping strategies developed by people. The study data were collected using the "Personal Characteristics Form", "Fear of Earthquake Scale", and "Coping with Earthquake Stress Scale". In the study, it was found that females' level of earthquake fear is higher than that of males. Married individuals have a higher level of earthquake fear compared to single individuals. It was found that those who received disaster awareness training and those who wanted to receive disaster awareness training had lower earthquake fear mean scores. As the levels of seeking social support, using religious coping, and positive reappraisal increase, the level of earthquake fear decreases. It has been determined that seeking social support is more commonly used than religious coping and positive reappraisal to cope with earthquake fear. Social support has been found to be a significant factor in coping with earthquake fear.Öğe Flood disaster experiences of elderly individuals living in the western black sea region of Türkiye: a phenomenological study(BioMed Central Ltd, 2025) Atalay, Ezgi; Gündüz Zeybeyoğlu, Fatma; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, GalipThe increase in the elderly population, the issue of flood risk management and flood preparedness stands out as an important issue that needs special attention. This study aimed to evaluate the feelings and thoughts of the elderly individuals who experienced floods in Türkiye before, during, and after the floods, and to reveal how they were affected, their vulnerability, and coping capacities. In this regard, phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Purposive sampling techniques were used for this study. A semi-structured interview form, which was prepared by the researchers by reviewing the relevant literature and taking expert opinions, was used to collect the data. The data of the study were collected between September and October 2024. The study was carried out with 14 people based on data saturation. Within the scope of the study, three themes were created. These are (theme 1) elderly people's risk knowledge and their views on the preparation process, (theme 2) vulnerabilities and coping capacities of elderly individuals during disasters, and (theme 3) post-flood needs, social network relations, and lessons learned. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that elderly individuals were aware of local disaster hazards, but despite this, the elderly did not make individual disaster preparations. It was determined that elderly individuals do not have sufficient access to early warning messages before the flood disaster occurs. During the disaster, elderly individuals were trapped in water, exhibited risky behaviors, experienced fragility during the evacuation process, and suffered material and moral losses. In the post-disaster period, elderly individuals have some basic needs such as clean water, medicine, shelter, toilets, nutrition, clothing, and health care, and their neighbors and relatives provide support in meeting these needs. The results obtained from the study may contribute to increasing the flood response capacity for elderly individuals, a vulnerable group in disasters.Öğe Investigation of avalanche events occurring in Palandöken Ski Resort(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Atalay, Ezgi; Gündüz, FatmaThe aim of the study is to examine the avalanche events that occurred in Erzurum Palandöken Ski Resort. Palandöken’s topography makes it vulnerable to avalanches. Avalanches are the rapid and sudden flow of snow masses accumulated on slopes and are considered one of the natural disasters. Several avalanches have occurred on Palandöken Mountain, leading to tragic results. In 1974, six people were buried under an avalanche and rescue teams were injured in a secondary avalanche. In subsequent years, avalanches died four people in 1975, one person in 1976, and eight people on Dragon Peak in 1977. In 2006, one tourist died in an avalanche on Palandöken Mountain. The last avalanche disaster on Palandöken Mountain, which occurred on December 21, 2024, resulted in the death of an athlete from the Kocaeli Judo National Team of the Turkish Olympic Preparation Center. Palandöken, one of Türkiye’s leading winter tourism destinations, hosts international events but faces significant avalanche risks due to its topography. In order to reduce these risks, it is essential to establish avalanche early warning and monitoring systems, provide avalanche safety training for tourists and personnel, and implement infrastructure measures to reduce avalanche hazards.Öğe Life satisfaction of university students surviving the 6th February earthquakes in Türkiye and the predictors thereof(Routledge, 2025) Kanbay, Yalçın; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Çınar Özbay, Sevil; Bekircan, EsraSurvivors of an earthquake disaster are at high risk of experiencing mental disorders, therefore their life satisfaction may be adversely affected accordingly. This study aims to examine the relationship between university students’ life satisfaction and social support, mental well-being, and psychological resilience levels. 449 students who were enrolled in higher education institutions in Türkiye and who experienced the earthquake disaster occurring on February 6th, 2023 participated in the study. The data of the study were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Research data were collected using the “Personal Information Form (PIF)”, “Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS)”, “Brief Resilience Scale (BRS)”, “Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale” and “Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)”. Research results revealed that the variables of social support, mental well-being, and psychological resilience together could explain 29% (R2 = 0.29) of the variation in life satisfaction. The model further indicated that the most effective variable on life satisfaction is social support. Life satisfaction improves in parallel with the increase in social support, mental well-being, and psychological resilience. Studies aiming to minimize the destructive effects of earthquakes and to improve the life satisfaction of individuals are of great importance in countries located in the earthquake zone.Öğe The effect of big five personality traits of prospective disaster risk managers on individual disaster resilience(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2024) Bekircan, Esra; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Kanday, Yalçın; Demiröz, Kader; Bulut, Enes; Çınar Özbay, SevilThis study aims to investigate the effect of the big five personality traits of prospective disaster risk managers on their individual disaster resilience. This study was conducted using a correlational research design. 200 students studying at state and foundation universities between April and May 2024 participated in the study. Personal Information Form, Five Factor Personality Inventory and Individual Disaster Resilience Scale were used as data collection tools. The data from the study were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling. The results of the study revealed that the personality traits of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to development have a significant and positive effect on individual disaster resilience. On the other hand, the sub-dimension of neuroticism was found to have a significant but negative effect on individual disaster resilience; individual disaster resilience was found to decrease as neuroticism increased. It was concluded that this study highlights the importance of personality traits for disaster management and psychological support practices. Accordingly, it was suggested that further research should focus on programmes that prioritise stress management and psychological therapy programmes, particularly for individuals with high levels of neuroticism, as well as disaster awareness and preparedness training for the general population.Öğe The effect of psychological first aid intervention on stress and psychological resilience in volunteers participating in 2023 earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey(SPRINGER, 2023) Bekircan, Esra; Usta, Galip; Torpuş, KemalThe aim of the study was to investigate the impact of psychological first aid intervention on stress and resilience in volunteers who participated in two significant earthquakes 2023 in Turkey. It is a single-blind randomized controlled trial to assess the effect of an online psychological first aid intervention on earthquake participants' stress and resilience levels. It was determined that the participants had a higher-than-average level of stress before the psychological first-aid intervention. The psychological first aid intervention group's stress level was shown to be considerably lower than the control group's. It is thought that online psychological first aid interventions should be provided for the psychological needs of the volunteers involved in disasters. A social benefit can be achieved by aiming to increase the psychological resilience levels of volunteers who take part in disasters and prevent psychological traumas.Öğe The impact of ChatGPT on nursing education: A qualitative study based on the experiences of faculty members(Churchill Livingstone, 2025) Durmuş Sarıkahya, Selma; Özbay, Özkan; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Çınar Özbay, SevilBackground: Recent advancements in artificial intelligence technologies particularly ChatGPT have supported learning and fostered critical thinking in nursing education. Earthquakes, however, can exacerbate this intolerance and trigger a fear of earthquakes because their timing and location are unpredictable. This study aimed to examine the moderating role of gender in the impact of intolerance of uncertainty on earthquake fear. A descriptive and correlational research design was adopted. Data for the study were collected from different age groups (n = 555), including residents of 11 provinces in the Southern and Southeastern Anatolia regions of Türkiye, which were severely affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes. In terms of gender distribution, 71.2% of the sample consisted of female individuals, while the mean age was calculated as 41.1 ± 4.4 (Min = 18; Max = 79). Personal Information Form, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, and Fear of Earthquake Scale were employed as data collection tools. The data of the study were examined using SPSS 26 and AMOS 23 package software. The moderation analysis was conducted using the 'Process Macro' developed by Hayes. Regression analysis based on the bootstrap method was performed to determine the moderation role of the 'gender' factor on the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on the fear of earthquakes. Gender was found to significantly influence earthquake fear, with females exhibiting higher levels than males. Gender also moderated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and earthquake fear, such that fear increased across low, medium, and high levels of intolerance of uncertainty, but more sharply among females. These findings indicate that intolerance of uncertainty and gender are significant determinants of earthquake fear. These results highlight the importance of considering gender differences in designing psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing earthquake-related fear.Öğe The relationship between perceived hope for preventing climate change and climate change worry and environmental behavior(TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC, 2025) Yılmaz, Gürkan; Kanat, Mehmet; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, GalipThe study aimed to determine the effect of the perception of hope for preventing climate change on climate change worry and environmental behavior. The study was planned as descriptive, cross-sectional and relational. The study was conducted with 301 people who met the inclusion criteria. In the study, low-level positive relationships were found between the perception of hope for preventing climate change and low-effort behaviors (r = 0.282, p < 0.01), high-effort behaviors (r = 0.195, p < 0.01) and the level of pro-environmental behavior (r = 0.260, p < 0.01). It was found that the climate change worry levels of married individuals (Mean = 33.88, SD = 8.11) were significantly higher than those of single individuals (Mean = 30.39, SD = 7.77) (t = 2.385, p = 0.018). The climate change worry levels of female (Mean = 31.96, SD = 7.82) were significantly higher than those of male (Mean = 29.78, SD = 7.79) (t = 2.421, p = 0.016). It is recommended that the socio-demographic characteristics of individuals be taken into consideration when creating environmental and climate change action plans.Öğe The Turkish adaptation of the fear of earthquake scale(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2024) Usta, Galip; Torpuş, Kemal; Kanbay, Yalçın; Çınar Özbay, SevilThis study was conducted to adapt the Fear of Earthquake Scale to Turkish. The methodological study, in which individuals in the 15–65 age group were included in the study, was carried out between March–April 2023.
