Effect of fire intensity on the earlier post-fire succession in Pinus nigra Arnold stands of Taşköprü, Kastamonu
(2025) Yılmaz, Fatma Nur; Küçük, Ömer; Güney, Kerim; Sağlam, Bülent
This study investigates the post-fire vegetation development in black pine (Pinus nigra) stands, which are widely distributed in Kastamonu and are under threat from forest fires. To this end, sampling was conducted in 2017 in the Taşköprü and Bayam Forest Management Directorates, where fires occurred in 2003 and 2012. Sample plots (25 × 50 m) were established using the minimum area method in two regions affected by surface fires (low intensity) and crown fires (high intensity). To observe the temporal effects of high-intensity fire, a sample area from a 2003 fire site was also analyzed and compared using the Shannon diversity index and the Chi-square test. Results showed significant differences in the family Pinaceae and the life form cryptophyte. Although black pine was observed to remain the dominant species after the surface fire, one- and two-year-old species belonging to the Rosaceae and Fabaceae families were recorded during the early stage of vegetation. In areas with reduced canopy closure, species such as Cistus laurifolius, C. creticus, and Rubus sp. were observed. Species composition in the crown fire site closely resembled that of surface fire areas with broken canopy. Cistus laurifolius was the dominant species in crown fire areas, and the highest species diversity was found in the 2003 crown fire site.

(Turkish Science and Technology Publishing (TURSTEP), 2025) Yıldız, İlyas; Eminağaoğlu, Özgür
Solidago virgaurea L. subsp. virgaurea (SVSV) has long been used in traditional medicine for treating urinary tract disorders, nephrolithiasis, and inflammatory-related conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant capacities and phenolic profiles of SVSV extracts. Antioxidant activities were assessed using the FRAP and DPPH assays. Moreover, total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FCR). The advanced technique, a potentiometric sensor, was utilized for antioxidant assays and FCR. Phenolic composition in plant extract was determined by LC–MS/MS. Solidago virgaurea methanolic extract exhibited strong antioxidant potential with a FRAP value of 19.07 µmol TE/mg extract and a DPPH radical scavenging activity of 78.8% at 128 ppm. The total phenolic content was found to be 413.82 mg GA/mg extract. Compared to standards, SVSV methanolic extract showed higher DPPH activity (78.80%) than BHT (68.25%), BHA (49.06%), and Trolox (65.25%), and was the same as with gallic acid (78.55%). LC-MS/MS analysis revealed that the major phenolic compounds were trans-cinnamic acid (126.19 µg/g), chlorogenic acid (58.83 µg/g), and vanillin (26.17 µg/g), along with rutin (11.36 µg/g), gentisic acid (11.03 µg/g), and quercetin (2.47 µg/g). These findings demonstrate that SVSV possesses remarkable antioxidant capacity and a diverse phenolic profile, supporting its potential use as a functional food ingredient and natural source of antioxidants.

The effect of naphthalen-1-yl 2,4,6-trimethyl benzenesulfonate on micronutrient and elemental balance in Zea mays L. Under cadmium stress
(MİRAÇ OCAK, 2025) Gümrükçüoğlu, Abidin; Altuntaş, Cansu; Yetişsin, Fuat; Demiralay, Mehmet
Cadmium (Cd) stress disrupts nutrient and elemental homeostasis in plants, thereby inhibiting growth and threatening food safety. Exogenous treatments can mitigate the adverse effects of Cd while enhancing the uptake of essential nutrients from the soil. Although the newly synthesized antioxidant naphthalen-1-yl 2, 4, 6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (NTB) has demonstrated high free-radical–scavenging capacity in abiotic stress tolerance, studies of its effects remain limited; moreover, no research has examined NTB’s impact on the elemental composition of plants under Cd stress. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate for the first time NTB’s potential to improve micronutrient efficiency and restore elemental homeostasis by assessing its influence on nutrient uptake and elemental balance in maize seedlings exposed to Cd stress. Three-week-old seedlings were pretreated with 0.25 mM NTB and then subjected to 100 μM Cd stress. Compared to Cd-stress, NTB+Cd treatment increased manganese (Mn) content by 85.4%, zinc (Zn) content by 43%, iron (Fe) content by 10.4% and copper (Cu) by 14.5%. Elemental analysis revealed that, NTB+Cd treatment exhibited a 5.5% increase in carbon (C) content and a 3% increase in hydrogen (H) content, alongside a 7.5% decrease in nitrogen (N) content; these shifts raised the C: N ratio by 12.7% and lowered the H: C ratio by 2.8% compared to the Cd stress. Notably, S content was detected only in NTB-treated seedlings, reaching 2.4% in the NTB-only treatment and 2.7% in the NTB+Cd. These findings demonstrate that 0.25 mM NTB treatment can effectively alleviate Cd toxicity by enhancing micronutrient uptake and restoring elemental balance.

(Lukasiewicz Research Network, 2025) Akyüz, İlker; Ersen, Nadir; Bardak, Selahattin; Polat, Kinyas; Acar, Mustafa
Due to global warming and climate change, more importance has started to be attached to renewable energy sources as alternatives to fossil fuels. Wood pellets are among the renewable energy sources, and have been the subject of a growing number of studies. Therefore, developments and trends in research on wood pellets can be determined through bibliometric analysis of publications. This study explores the current status and "hot topics" of research on wood pellets using performance analysis and scientific mapping based on publications from 1980-2023. For this purpose, we carried out a bibliometric analysis of 758 publications in the Web of Science database scanned with the keywords "wood" and "pellets". The numbers of publications and citations on wood pellets have grown steadily over the years, with 67% of publications and 89% of citations coming in the last decade. A total of 2,294 authors from 884 organizations and six continents have contributed publications in the field of wood pellets. The University of British Columbia (Canada) and the United States Department of Energy (USA) were the institutions with the most numerous and the most cited publications. Sokhansanj Shahab from the University of British Columbia was the most active and most cited author. The published literature has focused on three topics: biomass, bioenergy, and combustion. As a result, this study will provide a general perspective for future research relating to wood pellets.

Excessive tree mortality is a global concern and remains poorly understood as it is a complex phenomenon. We lack global and temporally continuous coverage on tree mortality data. Ground-based observations on tree mortality, e.g., derived from national inventories, are very sparse, and may not be standardized or spatially explicit. Earth observation data, combined with supervised machine learning, offer a promising approach to map overstory tree mortality in a consistent manner over space and time. However, global-scale machine learning requires broad training data covering a wide range of environmental settings and forest types. Low altitude observation platforms (e.g., drones or airplanes) provide a cost-effective source of training data by capturing high-resolution orthophotos of overstory tree mortality events at centimeter-scale resolution. Here, we introduce deadtrees.earth, an open-access platform hosting more than two thousand centimeter-resolution orthophotos, covering more than 1,000,000 ha, of which more than 58,000 ha are manually annotated with live/dead tree classifications. This community-sourced and rigorously curated dataset can serve as a comprehensive reference dataset to uncover tree mortality patterns from local to global scales using spacebased Earth observation data and machine learning models. This will provide the basis to attribute tree mortality patterns to environmental changes or project tree mortality dynamics to the future. The open nature of deadtrees.earth, together with its curation of high-quality, spatially representative, and ecologically diverse data will continuously increase our capacity to uncover and understand tree mortality dynamics.

Aim of study: The white flowers of Osmanthus species have been valued for centuries in medicinal and aromatic applications due to their distinct fragrance and chemical composition. Among the 27 species distributed globally, Osmanthus decorus is the only species endemic to the Caucasus region, found in Russia, Georgia, and Türkiye. O. decorus has a distinct distribution area around Artvin but has not been sufficiently studied at the molecular level regarding its differentiation from other species. Material and method: This study focuses on identifying the molecular differences between Turkish O. decorus samples and other species while constructing their phylogenies. Phylogenetic relationships were analyzed using Bayesian inference with universal DNA barcode markers (nrDNA ITS and cpDNA matK). Main results: The nuclear and chloroplast data were consistent, and all Caucasian Osmanthus specimens clustered into a strongly supported monophyletic group. As a result of the Bayesian analysis, it was determined that O. decorus does not clearly separate from other species within the genus. Research highlights: According to the results of BLAST analysis, it was determined that the samples from Russia and Georgia, which are geographically close to the samples from Türkiye, were 100% matched.

Socio-economic monitoring and evaluation of Çoruh River watershed rehabilitation project in Türkiye
(KASTAMONU UNIVERSITY, 2025) Öztürk, Atakan; Demirci, Ufuk; Yılmaz, İnci Zeynep
Aim of study: It is aimed to monitor and evaluate the effects of activities such as afforestation, erosion control, and income generating supports within the scope of & Ccedil;oruh River Watershed Rehabilitation Project. Area of study: The study was carried out in 12 micro-catchments selected from Artvin, Erzurum and Bayburt Provinces located in the & Ccedil;oruh River Watershed in T & uuml;rkiye. Material and method: Two surveys were conducted. In the first stage, a survey was conducted with 1075 household representatives in a total of 61 villages. In the second stage, 11 socio-economic monitoring and evaluation indicators were determined under four monitoring aspects, and the final survey was conducted with a total of 455 people. Main results: The expected effect with the & Ccedil;RWRP has occurred in a total of 6 indicators, three from the socio-economic status aspect, one of each aspect as wood consumption, marketing of products, and awareness of rehabilitation project. There is a statistical difference between the initial and the final monitoring values due to the effect of the & Ccedil;RWRP. Research highlights: The percentage of households considering migration out of the village in the next five years decreased from 17.1% to 11.9% across the study area. It is important to repeat such studies in the following years to reveal the impact of this project in the medium and long term in aAmore realistic way.

Aphid species (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on medicinal-aromatic plants in Artvin (Türkiye)
(Plant Protection Central Research Institute, 2025) Akyıldırım Beğen, Hayal; Eminağaoğlu, Özgür; Görür, Gazi; Şenol, Özhan; Yüksel, Emrah
Medicinal and aromatic plants have recently gained popularity, contributing to the economic strength of countries or regions by increasing employment opportunities and representing the areas where they are grown, thus creating various tourism possibilities. However, exposure of these plants to insect groups consuming plant sap, such as aphids, in their natural or unnatural habitats can lead to product loss. There are 350 species of plants exhibiting medicinal-aromatic properties in Artvin province. In this study, medicinal-aromatic plant species distributed in the province were evaluated in terms of aphid population, and 80 aphid species were identified from 72 medicinal-aromatic plants. According to the data obtained from the fields, the highest number of aphid species were found on apple (Malus sylvestris), poplar (Populus nigra), plum (Prunus spp.) and oak (Quercus petreae) species respectively. Aphids were rarely found in medicinal-aromatic plants that give off a strong odor, such as thyme and mint, and it was observed that they did not form dense populations. It was determined that the identified aphid species generally formed dense populations on the leaf surface of fruit-bearing species while they fed on stems and leaves in annual species. To conclude, the study highlights the significant impact of aphid populations on the medicinal-aromatic plants in Artvin, underscoring the need for continuous monitoring and effective management strategies to protect the plants and the economic opportunities they represent.

Forest ecosystem services and local perception in protected areas: Evidence from the eastern black sea region
(Corvinus University of Budapest, 2025) İnanç Özkan, Sevim; Aksu, Güven
This study investigates local community perceptions of forest ecosystem services within protected areas of Turkey’s Eastern Black Sea region, focusing on socio-economic, cultural, and geographic influences. Surveys conducted with 200 participants across six conservation sites revealed high awareness of key services including air quality regulation, erosion control, biodiversity conservation, recreation, and cultural heritage. Perceptions varied significantly with age, education, income source, and proximity to protected areas. Opinions on environmental protection measures and local participation were mixed, highlighting a pronounced need for enhanced education and participatory governance. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating traditional ecological knowledge and local socio-cultural factors into management strategies to support sustainable conservation.

Assessing effects of forest fires on plant nutrients and biomass in northeastern Türkiye
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2025) Sağlam, Bülent; Uçarlı, Yasin; Aybar, Mustafa; Yılmaz, Fatma Nur
Forest fires have the potential to greatly impact both flora and fauna and are therefore one of the key regulators of ecosystem sustainability. The primary aim of this research was to assess the impact of forest fires on plant nutrients and weight in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests in the Northeastern Türkiye. Plant samples were collected from designated burned and control plots in the research region in May and August season. The weight of the plants was measured both after drying in an oven and after air-drying. Subsequently, the plant samples were analyzed to determine the levels of Ca, Fe, Mg, Na, K, C, H, N, and S nutrients. The results revealed that the levels of all nutrients were greater in the burned area compared to the control plots. Furthermore, Ca, Fe, Mg, H, and N content exhibited statistically significant disparities when compared to the control plots. The N% content in the burned area during the month of May was 5.57, while in the control plot it was 4.97. This study also demonstrated that prescribed fire may effectively enhance plant nutrients contents and a tool for sustainable use of forest resources.
