In Turkish culture, Köroğlu is an essential character found in epics, stories, performances, folk songs created by the people, and in today's secondary oral culture environment. Artvin is one of the prominent cities in the region in question. In the region has produced numerous ashiks and folk poets from the 1 7th century to the present day. In this respect, there is a rich cultural memory surrounding the art of the ashik. The folk song discussed in this article was collected in Artvin (Şavşat). In the Köroğlu narratives, alongside the central hero, the adventures of supporting characters (such as the Keleşes and women) also occupy an important place. Among these, Ayvaz is a significant supporting character in the Köroğlu narratives. Skilled in both heroism and the art of the ashik, Ayvaz is Köroğlu’s blood brother, deputy and adopted son. Furthermore, Ayvaz stands out from the others due to his qualities of bravery, loyalty, quick wit and self-sacrifice. Among the Köroğlu songs, there are quite a few praises of Ayvaz. The song “Haykırdı Çıktı Meşeden” discussed in this article is also an example of Köroğlu's depiction of Ayvaz's bravery. Consequently, the Köroğlu folk song entitled ‘Haykırdı Çıktı Meşeden’ is analysed in this article within its social and cultural context. Additionally, the vocabulary of the folk song has been examined; structural and musical analyses have been conducted; and performances of the folk song available online have also been evaluated. In this regard, the significance of the region where the folk song was collected within the Köroğlu melodies has been highlighted.
