Öğe Artvin yöresi potansiyel erozyon sahaları ile ağaçlandırma ve erozyon kontrol çalışmalarına genel bir bakış(Artvin Çoruh Üniversitesi, 2004) Göktürk, Aşkın; Ölmez, Zafer; Temel, Fatih; Öncül, ÖmerArtvin-Çoruh Vadisi boyunca toprak erozyonu ciddi şekilde devam etmektedir. Vadi boyunca içerilere doğru gidildikçe iklim karasala dönüşmekte ve giderek kuraklaşmaktadır. Arazi yapısının çok dik, engebeli ve eğimli olmasından dolayı büyük ölçüde erozyona maruz kalan bu alanlarda toprak ve bitki örtüsü arasındaki ekolojik dengenin devam ettirilmesi zorunludur. Bunun için potansiyel ağaçlandırma ve erozyon kontrol alanlarının tespiti yanlış arazi kullanımının önüne geçilmesinde ve erozyonun önlenmesinde önemli bir adım olacaktır. Çalışmamıza göre Artvin ilinde orman sınırları içinde kalan 153915 ha ve orman sınırları dışında kalan 55990 ha alanda ağaçlandırma ve erozyon kontrol çalışması yapılması gerekmektedir. 1992-2003 yılları arasında yılda ortalama 380.8 ha ağaçlandırma ve 1009.2 ha erozyon kontrol çalışması planlanmış, bunların sırasıyla % 35.4 ve % 104.5’i gerçekleştirilmiştirÖğe Artvin-Çoruh havzasında doğal olarak yetişen bazı çalı ve ağaçcık türlerinin fidan üretim tekniğinin araştırılması(Tübitak, 2006) Yahyaoğlu, Zeki; Ölmez, Zafer; Eminağaoğlu, Özgür; Temel, Fatih; Göktürk, AşkınBu çalışmada, Artvin-Çoruh Vadisi boyunca doğal olarak yetişen; Arbutus andrachne, Cistus creticus, Colutea armena, Cotinus coggyria, Cotoneaster nummularia, Crataegus microphylla, Crataegus monogyna subsp. azarella, Crataegus monogyna, Crataegus pontica, Crataegus pseudoheterophylla, Ephedra mqjor, Jasminum fruticans, Juniperus foetidissima, Juniperus excelsa, Juniperus subsp. oxycedrus, Paliurus spina-christii, Punica granatum, Pyracantha coccinea ve Rhus coriaria türlerinin tohumlarının çimlenme engellerini giderecek uygun yöntemlerin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Tohumlar türlerin olarak gösterdikleri alanlardan toplanmıştır.Öğe Britanya Kolumbiyası (Kanada) ormancılığında ağaç ıslahı(Orman Genel Müdürlüğü, 2024) Temel, FatihBritanya Kolumbiyası (BC), Kanada’nın en batısında yer alan ve Türkiye yüzölçümünün yaklaşık 1,2 katı büyüklüğündeki bir eyaletidir. BC’nin yarıdan fazlası ormanlarla kaplıdır ve ormancılık, enerjiden sonra Eyalet ekonomisinin en önemli ikinci sektörüdür. Neredeyse tamamı (%95) devlete ait olan bu ormanlardan her yıl yaklaşık 200 bin hektarı (ha) kesilmekte ve bunun %80’i yapay olarak gençleştirilmektedir. Yıllık fidan ihtiyacının %82’si Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus contorta var. latifolia ve Picea glauca x engelmannii türlerine aittir. Bunlar dâhil toplam 13 türde yürütülen ağaç ıslahı çalışmaları ile hacimde %20 kadar bir genetik kazanç elde edilmiştir. Gençleştirme çalışmalarında ıslah edilmiş tohum kullanılması yasal zorunluluk olup, oldukça sağlıklı işleyen bir tohum üretim ve kayıt sistemi ile ağaç ıslahı çalışmalarının sonuçları odun üretimine yansıtılmaktadır. Materyal olarak Doğu Ladini’nin Artvin ve Posof (Ardahan)’daki doğal yayılış alanı içinde 33 noktadan 3 veya 5 anaçtan açık tozlaşma ürünü kozalaklar toplanmıştır. Kozalak ve tohum özelliklerine ait karakterler (kozalak boyu, kozalak eni, elde edilen tohumların 1000 tane ağırlığı, tohum eni, tohum boyu ve tohum kanat uzunluğu) ölçülmüştür. Araştırma alanının coğrafik özelliklerine göre bu veriler değerlendirilmiştir. Kozalakların elde edildiği ağaçların bulunduğu yerin GPS yardımıyla koordinatları, denizden yüksekliği ve bakıları tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen istatistik analizlerine tabi tutulmuştur. Yapılan korelasyon analizi sonucunda tohum toplanan alanların yükseltisi ile bazı kozalak değerleri (kozalak eni ve kozalak boyu) arasında negatif bir korelasyon olduğu belirlenmiştir. Yükselti arttıkça kozalak eni ve kozalak boyu değerleri azalmaktadır. Ayrıca denizden uzaklık ile kozalak eni, tohum eni ve 1000 tane ağırlığı arasında yine negatif bir korelasyon olduğu tespit edilmiştir (p<0.05).Öğe Doğu Ladini'nin (Picea orientalis L. Link.) Link.) genetik yapılanmasının tanımlanması ve (2) bu yapılanmanın çevre etmenleriyle ilişkilendirilmesidir. Bunun için, Doğu Ladininin Türkiye’deki doğal yayılış alanı içinde 59 noktadan bir, üç ya da beşer anaçtan açık tozlaşma ürünü tohumlar toplanmış ve bu kozalaklardan elde edilen tohumların 1000 tane ağırlığı, çimlenme yüzdesi ve çimlenme hızı ile kozalak boyu ve çapı, bir kozalaktaki tohum sayısı laboratuarda belirlenmiştir. Daha sonra Trabzon-Of Orman Fidanlığında her ailenin (bir ağaçtan elde edilen tohumlardan yetişen fidanlar) her tekrarda 5 fidandan oluşan bir sırayla temsil edileceği 3 tekrarlı rasgele tam bloklar düzeninde bir ortak bahçe deneyi kurulmuştur. Fidanların kotiledon sayısı, hipokotil boyu, kök boğaz çapı ve fidan boyu gibi özellikleri belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca kozalakların elde edildiği ağaçların bulunduğu yerin GPS yardımıyla koordinatları, denizden yüksekliği ve bakıları tespit edilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler yukarıdaki amaçları karşılamak üzere varyans (ANOVA) ve korelasyon analizlerine tabi tutulmuştur. Örnekleme noktalarının değerlendirmeye katılan tüm değişkenler bakımından birbirlerinden farklılıklar gösterdikleri ve bu değişkenlerin örnekleme noktalarının coğrafi özellikleri ile önemli derecede ilişkili oldukları bulunmuştur.Öğe Doğu ladini’nde (picea orintalis) ıslah çalışmaları(Artvin Çoruh Üniversitesi, 2010) Temel, FatihDoğu Ladini (Picea orientalis L.) ülkemiz ormancılığının asli türlerindendir. Dünya üzerinde yerel bir yayılışa sahip olan bu tür ülkemizde 300 000 ha dolayında bir yayılışa sahiptir. Doğu Ladininde tohum taşıma bölgeleri (tohum transfer zonları) ortaya konulmuş olup, beş ana ve 18 alt bölge belirlenmiştir. Türün genetik çeşitliliğinin güvence altına alınması ve nitelikli tohum üretimi amacıyla iki gen koruma ormanı, 12 tohum meşceresi ve dokuz tohum bahçesi kurulmuştur. Bunların yanında 1950’li yıllardan itibaren Doğu Ladini’nde köken çalışmaları da yapılmış olup kökenler arasında çeşitli tohum, fide ve büyüme özellikleri bakımından farklılıklar ortaya konulmuştur. Bu çalışmalar Doğu Ladini’nin ıslahında iyi bir altlık oluşturmaktadır. Ancak Doğu Ladini’nin verimli bir şekilde ıslah edilebilmesi bakımından yeterli değildir. Doğu Ladini’nin karşı karşıya bulunduğu tehditler göz önüne alındığında (kabuk böceği, iklim değişikliği) hem türün geleceğinin güvence altına alınması hem de ormancılığımızda asli tür olarak kullanılmaya devam edilebilmesi için yoğun ıslah çalışmalarına ihtiyaç duyulacağı açıktırÖğe Effect of cold stratification treatments on germination of drought tolerant shrubs seeds(2007) Ölmez, Zafer; Temel, Fatih; Göktürk, Aşkın; Yahyaoğlu, ZekiAbstract: This study was carried out to determine effects of different durations (20, 40, 60 days and control) of cold stratification treatments on seed germination and to overcome dormancy in seeds of twelve different drought tolerant plants. The species used in this study were Arbutus andrachne L., Cistus creticus L., Colutea armena Bois. Huet., Cotinus coggygria Scop., Cotoneaster numullaria Fisch. and Mey., Elaeagnus angustifolia L., Jasminum fruticans L., Paliurus spina-christii Mill., Punica granatum L., Pyracantha coccinea Roem., Rhus coriaria L., and Ziziphus jujuba Mill. The seeds were sown in polyethylene pots under greenhouse and on seedbeds under open field conditions. Statistical design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Germinated seeds were counted and observed periodically for 90 days after sowing to determine germination percentages (GP) and germination rates (GR). While the highest GP were determined according to duration of cold stratification under greenhouse conditions for each species were 44.2% for 60 days, 2.5% for 20 days, 85.6% for 60 days, 13.5% for 20 and 60 days, 64.3% for 20 days, 11.2% for 60 days, 8.2% for 20 days and 14.1% for 20 days for Cotinus coggygria, Cotoneaster numullaria, Jasminum fruticans, Paliurus spina-christii, Pyracantha coccinea, Punica granatum, Rhus coriaria and Ziziphus jujuba respectively. The highest GP were 16.5% for Arbutus andrachne and 91.3% for Colutea armena for 20 days cold stratified seeds and sown under open field conditions. Furthermore, the highest GP were obtained from seeds of Cistus creticus (27.5%) and Elaeagnus angustifolia (56.2%) in control sowingÖğe Effects of some pretreatments on germination of bladder-senna (Colutea armena Boiss. and Huet.) and smoke-tree (Cotinus coggygria Scop.) seeds(Triveni Enterprises, 2008) Ölmez, Zafer; Yahyaoğlu, Zeki; Temel, Fatih; Göktürk, AşkınThis study was carried out to determine effects of pre-treatments including floating in hot water (100,C) followed by continual cooling for 24 hr in the same water, floating in tap water for 24 hr, submersion in concentrate (98%)sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and cold stratification for different durations (20, 40 and 60 days) and their combinations on seed germination and to investigate how to overcome dormancy of seeds of Colutea armena Boiss. and Huet. and Cotinus coggygria Scop. The seeds were sown in polyethylene pots in the greenhouse and on seedbeds under open field conditions. The statistical design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The highest germination percentage (77.19%), the best germination rate (16 days) and the highest growth rate (69.01%) were obtained from Colutea armena seeds that were submersed in sulphuric acid for 30 min and sown in the greenhouse. The pre-treatment of submersion in sulphuric acid for 20 min with cold stratification for 60 days gave the highest germination percentage (82.77%) and the highest growth rate (79.37%) in the greenhouse for Cotinus coggygria seeds. On the other hand, the best germination rate (9 days) was obtained from smoketree seeds that were cold stratified 60 days and sown under open field conditions, It can be stated that there is an affirmative effect of the greenhouse condition on germination percentage and growth rate values of the seeds used in this study.Öğe First Report of Swiss Needle Cast Caused by Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii on Douglas-Fir in Turkey(2003) Temel, Fatih; Stone, J.K.; Jhonson, RandiTwo 15-year-old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) test plantations at Artvin, in the eastern Black Sea Coast Region of Turkey, were inspected in July 2003. Trees in both plantations had yellow-to-brown foliage, and most trees retained only the current year's needles, resulting in sparse tree crowns. Numerous minute, black fruit bodies were present along the rows of stomata on the lower surfaces of needles from both plantations. Laboratory examination revealed that the fruiting bodies that emerged through the stomata were those of Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii [Rohde] Petrak, the causal agent of Swiss needle cast (SNC). Although low infection levels are relatively harmless, heavily infected trees lose all but the current year's foliage, with resulting average volume growth reductions of 23 to 52% (2,3). The pathogen occurs throughout the natural range of Douglas-fir in western North America, where it is native, as well as in eastern North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, where both host and fungus have been introduced (1,2). The pathway of introduction of the pathogen to Turkey is unknown. Douglas-fir is the only known host of P. gaeumannii, and the pathogen is not known to be seedborne. Where P. gaeumannii has been introduced outside of western North America, infected nursery stock has been considered the most probable source (1). However, the affected Artvin plantations were established with seedlings produced in Turkey by using seed obtained from various sources. Earlier Douglas-fir plantations in Turkey date from 1953 and were established by using seed originating from France. The possibility that the pathogen could have arrived with untracked Douglas-fir seedlings from outside Turkey imported by arboreta or private nurseries cannot be excluded. Alternatively, scattered Douglas-fir plantations could have served as links between the Artvin infestation and known infested areas in central and eastern Europe, with spread occurring via windborne ascospores, similar to the spread of the pathogen to Denmark from the British Isles (ca. 1930) (1). Presence of severe SNC infections in Douglas-fir test sites at Artvin could hamper efforts to use this species in operational forestry in Turkey. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of Swiss needle cast on Douglas-fir in western Asia. For. 17:86, 2002.Öğe Genetic variation in cold hardiness and phenology between and within Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations: Implications for seed transfer(DE GRUYTER POLAND, 2010) Kandemir, G. E.; Kaya, Zeki; Temel, Fatih; Önde, SertaçWind-pollinated seeds from 40 trees (half-sib families) were collected from each of six Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations in southern Turkey. Two-year old seedlings were evaluated for growth, phenology and cold resistance in a common garden experiment established in Ankara, located outside the species' natural range. Each family was represented with a six-tree row plot within each of the three replications. The below freezing temperatures (-15.2 degrees C) observed in January and February of 2000 were sufficient to observe visually-assessable-cold damage to the seedlings. The populations significantly differed in all traits under investigation except for second flushing in 1999. Populations originating from more inland and higher elevation areas were more resistant to cold than coastal low elevation populations. Families within populations were significantly different as regards all traits except HT00. Family heritability for bud burst was 0.40, and ranged from 0.12 to 0.37 for height, and from 0.20 to 0.23 for bud set. Final height of cold damage prone seedlings was shorter than cold tolerant seedlings. Families with early bud-set, later bud-burst and shorter second flush shoots suffered less from cold damage. Considering the expected climate change in the eastern Mediterranean, there is a potential for using this species outside its natural range, especially in sites experiencing more continental climate since it will be possible to move the species 200-300 m in altitude and 2-3 degrees in latitude.Öğe Genetic variation in height, diameter and second flushing in four-year old maritime pine progeny tests in Türkiye(2022) Atmaca,Cihan; Temel, Fatih; Taştan, Yusuf; Uzan Eken, BurcuA maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) breeding program was ini-tiated in Türkiye by selecting plus trees from plantations across the country. Quantifying genetic variation in growth traits is essential for this program. Four-year old trees from 140 open-pollinated maritime pine families were assessed for height (HT), root collar diameter (D) and number of shoots in the fourth growing season (S) in three progeny test plantations (Kefken, Gebze and Çatalca) in northwest Türkiye. Growth was greater in Kefken, followed by Gebze and Çatalca. Both indivi-dual tree (???????2 ) and family mean (???????2 ) heritability estimates were greatest for HT (???????2 =0.22 and ???????2 =0.77) followed by D (0.16 and 0.59) and S (0.08 and 0.45). While genetic correlation between HT and D was strong (???????????? =0.72), S was correlated moderately with HT (0.56) and weakly with D (0.11). Genotype × environment interaction was significant only for D. While modest genetic gains (up to 15.20 % over the average of family means) from selections at age four seem possible for growth, changes in patterns of genetic variation and interrelationships among the traits as the trees age remains to be explored in the future.Öğe Germination of Anatolian Black Pine (Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana) seeds from the Lakes Region of Turkey: Geographic variation and effect of storage(Academic Press, 2011) Temel, Fatih; Gülcü, Süleyman; Ölmez, Zafer; Göktürk, AşkınEffects of 10-year storage on germination of seeds in 191 Anatolian Black Pine trees from 23 populations in the Lakes Region of Turkey were investigated. Germination tests were conducted with both fresh (in year 1999) and stored (in year 2009) seeds and variation in germination was related to geographic features of the populations. Significant reductions in germination rate (from 79.93% to 30.68%) and germination percentage (from 95.99% to 58.41%) were observed after 10-year storage. Germination characteristics seem to be associated with humidity of population locations. Seeds from more inland (i.e., continental) populations germinated slower but attained higher germination percentage for both seed sets. Germination percentage of stored seeds is highest at elevations with high humidity. Greater attention should be given to environmental conditions of seed sources in storing Anatolian Black Pine seeds in the Lakes Region of Turkey as it is a very important tool in ensuring continuous seedling production and genetic conservation.Öğe Leaf size variation in natural wild cherry (prunus avium) populations in Turkey(Friends Science Publishers, 2018) Temel, FatihVariation in leaf size in relation to population location was investigated in 25 natural wild cherry (Primus avium L.) populations in Turkey. A total of 25 populations were identified across Turkey. In each population 20 trees were selected and 20 fully expanded leafs were collected from each tree. Petiole length (P) and lamina length (L) and width (W) were measured. All, but one, of the populations are in northern Anatolia, at elevations from 59 to 1900 m. Mean annual temperature and precipitation range from 4.1 to 13.9 degrees C and from 609 to 1051 mm, respectively. Climate types at each location range from humid to semi-arid. On population basis, large and significant amount of variation in L (9.75 - 13.62 cm), W (5.34 - 7.39 cm) and P (2.48 - 3.39 cm) were observed. Greater L and W values were observed in populations at lower elevations with higher mean annual temperatures. Similarly, increased precipitation was associated with larger leafs, but leaf size was significantly smaller at locations with higher precipitation between April to August. The populations can be grouped as inland and coastal based on the results of the hierarchical cluster analysis. More than 40% of the total variation in leaf size was explained by differences among populations and trees within populations. Until through genetic studies are conducted, variation in moderately heritable leaf traits can be used to discern P. avium populations for conservation purposes in Turkey. Elif; Önde, Sertaç; Temel, Fatih; Akar, Taner; Budak, Hikmet; Kaya, ZekiScald (caused by Rhynchosporium secalis) is one of the major plant diseases of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivation in central Anatolia and transitional zones of Turkey. Eighty barley germplasm consisting of 40 resistant and 40 sensitive lines provided by Central Research Institute of Field Crops were screened with six simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to assess the magnitude and pattern of genetic diversity, as well as to investigate potential use of these markers for efficient scald resistant breeding program in the future. Estimated genetic parameters indicated that scald resistant (He=0.43) and sensitive (He=0.40) barley lines still maintain large and similar magnitude of genetic diversity. However, genetic variation among the lines was higher in the sensitive lines (46%) than in the resistant lines (39%). Especially, the presence of high genetic diversity among resistant lines (e.g., R25, R39) suggests that this diversity could be an important drive in future scald resistant barley breeding programs. The results of this study also revealed that Bmag6 and Bmag206 as SSR markers could be utilized in pre-screening of large number of barley lines for future scald resistance breeding programs with reduced time, cost and labor.Öğe Monumental Castanea sativa Mill. Individuals on the Slopes of Genya Mountain, Artvin, Turkey(INT SOC Horticultural Science, 2009) Temel, Fatih; Özalp, MehmetAged trees are considered as a valuable source of information on the past ecological conditions and social life where they are found, and their documentation and preservation are vital for the continuity of benefits they provide. Nineteen Castanea sativa Mill. individuals on abandoned agricultural plots near Artvin city center (Turkey) were measured for diameter at breast height (DBH), circumference at breast height (CBH) and height. DBH and CBH ranged between 72 cm and 186 cm, and between 231 cm and 615 cm, respectively. The highest tree is 22.20 m tall and the shortest is 13.65 m. Estimated ages of the trees ranged from 135 to 342 years. With their size and age, these trees can be designated as monumental trees. Protection of these trees will help in conserving C. sativa genetic resources and in passing the information they hold in their annual rings to future generations.Öğe Population variation in drought resistance and its relationship with adaptive and physiological seedling traits in Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.)(TUBITAK Scientific & Technical Research Council Turkey, 2017) Kandemir, Gaye; Önde, Sertaç; Temel, Fatih; Kaya, ZekiVariation in drought resistance and its relationship with adaptive and physiological traits in forest trees are important in choosing suitable seed sources for reforestation and afforestation programs. A common garden experiment using 240 half-sib families originating from coastal and inland populations of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) in Turkey was set up with three replicates. The aims were to determine variation of drought damage, height growth, and phenology among populations and to investigate the relationship between drought damage and physiological traits (i.e. plant moisture stress and proline content). Three-year-old seedlings were subjected to drought treatment during the summer of 2000 and adaptive and physiological traits were measured. Except for bud burst, the majority of the variation resided between populations, leading to low heritability estimates for all traits. On average, inland populations were more resistant to drought and taller, with earlier bud burst and bud set times, than coastal populations. Proline content increased with higher drought damage, especially in cold-resistant and inland families. Inland populations are more drought-resistant than coastal populations. The results of the study demonstrate the possibility of selection for drought resistance for Turkish red pine at the population level.Öğe SSR belirteçleri yardımıyla Doğu Ladini (picea orientalis (L.) Bu amaçla toplam 29 (17 doğal koru, 10 tohum meşceresi ve 2 gen koruma ormanı) doğal populasyon örneklenmiştir. Örneklerden elde edilen DNA 15 adet SSR belirteci ile taranmıştır. Tüm populasyonlar için ortalama allel sayısı 14.47, etken allel sayısı 5.60, gözlenen heterozigotluk 0.53 ve beklenen heterozigotluk 0.70 olarak bulunmuştur. İncelenen populasyonlardaki genetik çeşitliliğin diğer ladin türleri ile karşılaştırıldığında orta düzeyde olduğu ve tohum üretimi amacıyla kullanılan populasyonların genel genetik çeşitliliği büyük oranda yansıttığı gözlenmiştir. Tohum meşcerelerinden elde edilecek tohumlarla gerçekleştirilecek yapay gençleştirme çalışmalarının türün genetik çeşitliliğini azaltıcı etkisi olacağı beklenmemekle beraber bu konu araştırılmaya muhtaçtır.Öğe Status of natural Turkish hazel (Corylus colurna L.) populations in Turkey(Artvin Çoruh Üniversitesi, 2017) Temel, Fatih; Arslan, Mustafa; Çakar, DenizLocation and climate information of 18 natural Turkish hazel populations in Turkey is reported. Populations are small (mean area = 206 ha) and are found at 700 m to 1600 m above sea level. Mean annual temperature is 8.83 °C and (range: 6.9 - 11 °C) and mean annual precipitation is 654.28 mm (range: 477 - 952 mm) at population locations. The species is of interest in Turkey for plantation in arid and semi-arid regions but only three of the 18 population locations are classified as semi-arid. The rest of the populations are located in more humid environments. The genetic structure of these populations should be determined and a comprehensive gene conservation program should be put in place. A through genetic testing (provenance and/or progeny tests) should be conducted to determine suitable seed sources and families for plantation in semi-arid environments.
