Trauma-informed care in pediatric oncology nursing
(John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2025) Çınar Özbay, Sevil; Gelin, Dilek; Durmuş Sarıkahya, Selma; Boztepe, Handan
Background: Childhood cancer is highly stressful and potentially traumatic for families. While trauma-informed care (TIC) aims to address these impacts, little is known about how pediatric oncology nurses understand and use TIC in practice. Method: This study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive design to explore pediatric oncology nurses' perceptions of trauma and trauma-informed care. Fifteen nurses with at least 1 year of experience working in a pediatric oncology unit in a city hospital in Türkiye were recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected between June and July 2025 through face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured interview guide based on the Trauma-Informed Care Pyramid, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis approach. Results: Five major themes were identified: (1) family- and child-centered communication and care, (2) understanding the health effects of trauma, (3) interprofessional collaboration, (4) understanding one's own history and reactions, and (5) screening and evaluation processes. Additionally, metaphor analysis revealed that nurses frequently described trauma as destructive objects, dark colors, natural disasters, harsh seasons, and bitter tastes underscoring perceptions of trauma as overwhelming and difficult to endure. These findings highlight both the potential for TIC integration and the current gaps in systematic training and organizational support. Conclusion: Pediatric oncology nurses recognize the effects of trauma and the need for psychosocial care, yet structured TIC practices remain limited. Integrating TIC principles into nursing education, strengthening team collaboration, and implementing systematic screening are key to improving holistic, family-centered care.

Does the perceived authentic leadership have a mediating role in the relationship between employees' emotional intelligence and self-compassion?
(UNIV WARSAW, 2023) Yalap, Osman; Gencay, Emre
Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to evaluate whether perceived authentic leadership has a mediating role in the relationship between employees' emotional intelligence levels and their self-compassion perceptions.Design/methodology/approach: All data in the research were obtained from 175 employees in 12 different tea factories. In the study, in which the descriptive and cross-sectional method was followed, the analysis of the data was made with Hayes' (2013) simple mediation analysis approach within the scope of structural equation modeling.Findings: The results of the analysis show that authentic leadership perceptions of employees are positively related to their emotional intelligence levels and self-compassion perceptions, and that perceived authentic leadership plays a mediating role in this relationship.Research limitations/implications: The research has some limitations. First, the findings obtained in the course of the analyses are not generalized to the whole population, as they are collected from a specific sample. It should be mentioned that the results were obtained from different institutions. It can be said that the perceived authentic leadership approach plays a role in the relationship between individual-oriented positive attitudes such as emotional intelligence and self-compassion. Therefore, lt is anticipated that the results obtained from the study contribute to the literature. In addition, handling the statistical aspect of the research only with the mediation analysis approach constitutes a separate limitation. Different statistical approaches can be adopted for future studies.Originality/value: This study presents a fragment of the results of structural equation modeling conducted for tea industry employees in Turkey on the topic of authentic leadership.

Kidney health awareness scale in adolescents: Theoretical form development study
(ISTANBUL UNIV, 2023) Metin Karaaslan, Mehtap; Kanbay, Yalçın; Çınar Özbay, Sevil
Objective: This study was conducted to develop a theoretical form based on the Lawshe technique to evaluate the kidney health awareness levels of secondary school students in light of scientific and objective criteria. Material and Methods: A question pool with 26 statements was created by reviewing the literature, and expert opinion (n:6) was taken to create a draft form. As a result of the expert evaluation, it was determined that six statements did not serve the purpose of the form and were removed from the study. The draft trial form with 20 statements was again submitted to expert evaluation (n:11). For construct validity and reliability, content validity criterion (CVC), content validity ratios (CVR), content validity index (CVI), Fleiss Cohen Kappa coefficient and Kendall's W goodness of fit values were calculated. Results: The content validity ratio was calculated for each statement in the trial form, and it was determined that all items in the form except item 14 were above the lower limit of 0.64. The content validity index was calculated for 19 items by taking the arithmetic mean of the content validity ratios, and it was determined that it was 0.89. Results showed that the construct validity of the trial form was statistically significant, as the CVI value (0.89) was higher than the CVC value (0.64). For the reliability of the form, the inter-expert agreement was examined, the Fleiss Kappa coefficient was calculated, and a value of 0.652 was obtained. Conclusions: As a result, this scale, whose validity and reliability are statistically accepted, can be used safely on secondary school students.

Disaster experiences of spontaneous volunteers: An evaluation on fires in the mediterranean region
(Ordu Üniversitesi, 2025) Demiröz Yıldırım, Sevda; Demiröz, Kader
Türkiye has been exposed to many natural, technological and man-made disasters throughout its history and these disasters have brought about various damages and losses. Especially in the last few years, various disasters such as earthquakes, floods and fires have caused continuous losses and damage in the country. One of these disasters is the largest and destructive forest fires in Turkey's history, which started on July 28, 2021, in Manavgat, Antalya and continued for 15 days in 17 provinces, affecting residential areas. It can be said that this disaster, in which local, national, international and voluntary resources were used, is an important example of cooperation, solidarity and organization for different actors. This study focuses on the experiences of spontaneous volunteers who actively worked in the fire areas during the 2021 forest fire. The sample of the study was selected among spontaneous volunteers who helped the intervention during the fire and participated in such processes as humanitarian aid, logistics and evacuation services behind the site. This study aims to provide suggestions for the problems encountered in the field in accordance with the experiences and experiences of the volunteers who come to the field in crises that may occur during disasters and emergencies. Phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The data obtained were analyzed with MAXQDA 2022 program. As a result of the analysis, three themes were identified: perception of volunteerism, intervention process, difficulties and recommendations. It was determined that the participants had the perception of volunteerism of being useful to society, serving, not expecting anything in return and helping and this situation affected them positively. Volunteers carried out activities’ preparation, coordination, logistic support, search and rescue and evacuation, fire extinguishing and cooling, humanitarian aid and logistic support during the intervention process. It was determined that they experienced difficulties in the disaster area in terms of ignorance and lack of awareness, presence of unintended people in the region and lack of coordination, which negatively affected the volunteers. Participants think that the difficulties encountered will be solved through social education, awareness raising and inter-institutional cooperation.

The moderating role of gender in the impact of intolerance of uncertainty on earthquake fear in Türkiye
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2025) Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip; Çınar Özbay, Sevil; Kanbay, Yalçın
Intolerance of uncertainty can be explained as individuals negative emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions to uncertain situations. Earthquakes, however, can exacerbate this intolerance and trigger a fear of earthquakes because their timing and location are unpredictable. This study aimed to examine the moderating role of gender in the impact of intolerance of uncertainty on earthquake fear. A descriptive and correlational research design was adopted. Data for the study were collected from different age groups (n = 555), including residents of 11 provinces in the Southern and Southeastern Anatolia regions of Türkiye, which were severely affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes. In terms of gender distribution, 71.2% of the sample consisted of female individuals, while the mean age was calculated as 41.1 ± 4.4 (Min = 18; Max = 79). Personal Information Form, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, and Fear of Earthquake Scale were employed as data collection tools. The data of the study were examined using SPSS 26 and AMOS 23 package software. The moderation analysis was conducted using the 'Process Macro' developed by Hayes. Regression analysis based on the bootstrap method was performed to determine the moderation role of the 'gender' factor on the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on the fear of earthquakes. Gender was found to significantly influence earthquake fear, with females exhibiting higher levels than males. Gender also moderated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and earthquake fear, such that fear increased across low, medium, and high levels of intolerance of uncertainty, but more sharply among females. These findings indicate that intolerance of uncertainty and gender are significant determinants of earthquake fear. These results highlight the importance of considering gender differences in designing psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing earthquake-related fear.

Flood disaster experiences of elderly individuals living in the western black sea region of Türkiye: a phenomenological study
(BioMed Central Ltd, 2025) Atalay, Ezgi; Gündüz Zeybeyoğlu, Fatma; Torpuş, Kemal; Usta, Galip
The increase in the elderly population, the issue of flood risk management and flood preparedness stands out as an important issue that needs special attention. This study aimed to evaluate the feelings and thoughts of the elderly individuals who experienced floods in Türkiye before, during, and after the floods, and to reveal how they were affected, their vulnerability, and coping capacities. In this regard, phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Purposive sampling techniques were used for this study. A semi-structured interview form, which was prepared by the researchers by reviewing the relevant literature and taking expert opinions, was used to collect the data. The data of the study were collected between September and October 2024. The study was carried out with 14 people based on data saturation. Within the scope of the study, three themes were created. These are (theme 1) elderly people's risk knowledge and their views on the preparation process, (theme 2) vulnerabilities and coping capacities of elderly individuals during disasters, and (theme 3) post-flood needs, social network relations, and lessons learned. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that elderly individuals were aware of local disaster hazards, but despite this, the elderly did not make individual disaster preparations. It was determined that elderly individuals do not have sufficient access to early warning messages before the flood disaster occurs. During the disaster, elderly individuals were trapped in water, exhibited risky behaviors, experienced fragility during the evacuation process, and suffered material and moral losses. In the post-disaster period, elderly individuals have some basic needs such as clean water, medicine, shelter, toilets, nutrition, clothing, and health care, and their neighbors and relatives provide support in meeting these needs. The results obtained from the study may contribute to increasing the flood response capacity for elderly individuals, a vulnerable group in disasters.

The mediating effect of academic procrastination on the relationship between nomophobia and netlessphobia in nursing students
(TUBA-TURKISH ACAD SCIENCES, 2025) Karagöz, Kevser; Çınar Özbay, Sevil
This study investigated the effect of 'nomophobia level' on 'netlessphobia level' in nursing students and examined the mediating role of 'academic procrastination behaviour' in this effect. This study was planned with a descriptive and correlational design. The study was conducted on 316 nursing students studying at the Faculty of Nursing between November and December 2023. Personal Information Form, F & imath;rat Nomophobia Scale, F & imath;rat Netlessphobia Scale, and Academic Procrastination Scale were used as data collection tools. The study found a strong positive correlation between the nomophobia score and the netlessphobia score (r =.795; p<.001) and a moderate positive and significant correlation with the academic procrastination score (r =.316; p<.001). 64% of the change in netlessphobia (R2=.79) is due to the direct effect of nomophobia. Students with high levels of nomophobia and academic procrastination had higher levels of netlessphobia than other students. In the study, academic procrastination mediated the relationship between nomophobia and netlessphobia. This means that academic procrastination acts as a link between nomophobia and netlessphobia, suggesting that the fear of disconnection from phones or the internet leads to procrastination, which in turn reinforces both phobias. Educating students about digital illnesses and developing awareness-based interventions to address nomophobia and netlessphobia may help to reduce academic procrastination.

Which factor ımpacts medical traumatic stress for pediatric patients: Scoping review
(W.B. Saunders, 2025) Çınar Özbay, Sevil; Semerci Şahin, Remziye; Akdeniz Kudubeş, Aslı; Durmuş Sarıkahya, Selma; Boztepe, Handan
Purpose: The objective of this scoping review was to systematically map, categorize, and synthesize the existing research identifying the factors associated with the development of medical traumatic stress in pediatric patients receiving clinical care. Methods: This review followed the methodological framework proposed by Booth et al. (2021) and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Six electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Scopus) were systematically searched until December 12, 2024. Results: Fourteen primary studies were included, covering diverse pediatric populations exposed to surgical procedures, intensive care admissions, chronic illnesses, oncological treatments, and severe infections. PMTS symptom frequency among pediatric patients ranged from 8.6 % to 60 % across studies. Key child-related risk factors included younger age, pre-existing emotional difficulties, hospitalization-related anxiety, and fear of death. Family-related factors such as parental PTSD symptoms, caregiver stress, and poor family functioning significantly influenced outcomes. Medical-related factors such as perceived life threat, emergency surgeries, repeated interventions, and hospitalization duration heightened PMTS risk. Socio-environmental influences, including low socioeconomic status, minority background, pandemic-related isolation, and social disruptions, further exacerbated vulnerability. Conclusion: Pediatric medical traumatic stress arises from a complex interplay of psychological, familial, medical, and socio-environmental factors. The findings highlight the critical need for trauma-informed, family-centered care approaches in pediatric healthcare settings. Clinical implications: The multidimensional nature of PMTS risk factors emphasizes the urgent need for early screening, trauma-informed pediatric care, and family-centered interventions tailored to the child's developmental, psychological, and sociocultural context.

Development of the generative artificial intelligence awareness scale for secondary school students in Türkiye
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2025) Semerci Şahin, Remziye; Özbay, Özkan; Çınar Özbay, Sevil; Durmuş Sarıkahya, Selma
The widespread adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education and daily life necessitates a deeper understanding of students’ awareness and attitudes. However, there is a lack of appropriate and psychometrically validated tools to assess these constructs reliably. This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of a newly developed scale measuring secondary school students' awareness of generative artificial intelligence in the Turkish context. This methodological study employed a cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational design. The research was conducted with 444 secondary school students aged 14–18. Data were collected using a Demographic Information Form and the Generative Artificial Intelligence Awareness Scale. The study followed a three-stage process in line with the STROBE checklist: (1) item development, (2) expert evaluation for content validity, and (3) construct validity and reliability testing. Construct validity was assessed using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses. Reliability was examined through Cronbach’s alpha, corrected item-total correlations, and split-half reliability analysis. EFA revealed a three-factor structure: Basic Knowledge of Generative Artificial Intelligence, Positive Attitudes Toward Generative Artificial Intelligence, and Concerns About the Impacts of Generative Artificial Intelligence, explaining 54.29% of the total variance. CFA supported the model, yielding acceptable fit indices (χ2/df = 3.792, RMSEA = 0.056, GFI = 0.905, CFI = 0.927, TLI = 0.919), indicating good model fit. The Cronbach’s alpha for the total scale was 0.946, with subscale coefficients ranging from 0.822 to 0.925. Corrected item-total correlations ranged from 0.512 to 0.733. Split-half reliability for the first factor showed strong consistency (Spearman-Brown = 0.891, Guttman = 0.887, correlation between halves = 0.804). The findings demonstrate that the Turkish version of the generative artificial intelligenceawareness scale is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing students’ knowledge, attitudes, and concerns about generative AI.
