Sonuç olarak, çalışmada Türkiye özelinde, yenilenebilir enerji politikalarının gelişimi bağlamında toplulukların katılımının önemi sürdürülebilir enerji geçişinin ekolojik ilkelerle uyumlu bir şekilde gerçekleştirilmesi gerektiği vurgulanmaktadır.Öğe Assessing the convergence of cropland ecological balance: A panel data analysis of 13 major agricultural countries(Bilingual Publishing Group, 2025) Şimşek, Orhan; Güler, İlkay; Özbek, Sefa; Naimoğlu, Mustafa; Adalı, ZaferThis study investigates the convergence hypothesis and stochastic dynamics of agricultural land use and ecological balance across 13 major agricultural countries from 1992 to 2022. The study's concentrated samples are Russia, the United States, the Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, China, France, Spain, Italy, Canada, Belgium, Indonesia, and India. The research uncovers notable variations in ecological balance by utilizing a comprehensive set of advanced panel unit root tests (Panel CIPS, CADF, Panel-LM, Panel-KPSS, and Bahmani-Oskooee et al.’s Panel KPSS Unit Root Test). The findings highlight significant improvements in Canada, contrasting with declines in the Netherlands, France, Germany, and the United States. The results indicate convergence in ecological balance among these countries, suggesting that agricultural practices are progressively aligning with sustainability objectives. The considered countries can determine and enact joint and collective policy actions addressing cropland sustainability. However, the univariate outcome also shows that the cropland ecological balance of Germany, China, France, Indonesia, and India does contain a unit root and stationary which means the presence of the constant-mean. The univariate actions from the mentioned governments will not promote persistent impact. Therefore, joint actions determined by the countries considered are recommended for the mentioned countries. However, the rest of the countries also enact local policies. The insights gained are critical for informing global sustainability strategies and aiding policymakers in developing effective measures to enhance agricultural practices and mitigate environmental impacts. This research provides a data-driven foundation for optimizing agricultural sustainability and supports international efforts to achieve long-term ecological stability.Öğe The role of economic growth and FDI in ecological footprint and the load capacity factor: Evidence from Türkiye(Technical University of Kosice, 2025) Güler, İlkay; Zhao, Xin; Memiş Karataş, Ayyüce; Aydınbaş, Gökçen; Adali, ZaferProposed sustainable economic development and growth have been among the leading and desired objectives of policymakers. Thus, various investigations have been conducted, considering different social, political, and economic factors to lessen environmental degradation and improve biocapacity. Within this context, Türkiye is one of the most essential cases because of its location and role in the global supply chain, emerging countries' members, and the severity of the environmental situation. Thus, the study employs the Fourier ARDL, FADL co-integration tests, FMOLS estimations with Fourier Terms, and Fourier Toda-Yamamoto analysis to investigate the role of economic growth and FDI in ecological footprint and the load capacity factor along with considering some control variables over the period between 1982 to 2021. As a result of the investigations, it is concluded that the economic growth, the FDI, and the remaining variables do not promote impact the load capacity factor. However, the considered variables pressure the environment when the ecological footprint is regarded as the environmental indicator, and the pollution haven hypothesis holds for Türkiye. To reverse and mitigate the harmful effects of economic activities, efforts, and policies should be made toward environmentally friendly forms of production, trade, FDI, and renewable energy sources.Öğe The investigations for the causality connection between exports and energy consumption(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2023) Adalı, Zafer; Mammadova, Simuzar Sultan; Mazanova, OfelyaThe current challenges experienced by all nations promote the trade-off between the increase in economic performance and the protected environment. The investigation based on the energy economy has become an irreplaceable topic to determine the correct path for minimizing the trade-off cost. Within this scope, this study has been performed to investigate the causality nexus between the exports indicators (aggregated exports and the ICT exports) and the energy consumption (renewable and nonrenewable energy consumption of the selected five emerging countries. The Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality analysis is performed on the annual data between 2000 and 2014. As a consequence of the evidence, it is documented that there are various causality relationships between the exports and the energy consumption indicators in the light of the performed analysis at different lags. However, the role of nonrenewable energy consumption is more active in the economies of the considered countries. According to the evidence, it is recommended for the emerging countries to invest and allocate more funds to renewable energy resources to diminish the role of nonrenewable energy resources in the economy.Öğe Testing the short, medium, and long-term effects of shocks on ecological balance(Springer, 2023) Yılancı, Veli; Adalı, Zafer; Çelik, Orkun; Bari, BilginEcological balance is an indicator of environmental degradation, which is computed as the difference between biocapacity and ecological footprint. In this study, we examine whether the effect of shocks on the ecological balance is permanent or temporary in the EU-15 countries, considering the period from 1961 to 2018. The application of unit root tests, with and without a Fourier function, indicates that the effects of shocks are temporary in only four countries. To reveal the persistence of shocks at different frequencies, that is, the short-, medium-, and long-run, we decomposed the ecological balance series by using the Discrete Wavelet Transform method. The unit root test results show that the effects of shocks are temporary in all countries in the short-run. However, the results also show that the shocks are temporary in nine countries in the medium-run and ten countries in the long-run. Thus, the implemented policies to balance ecology are not effective in the short-run but are effective in only six countries in the medium-term and in only five countries in the long-term. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering different frequencies when testing the effectiveness of empirically implemented policies. Regarding policy implications, this study suggests focusing on medium- and long-term environmental policies rather than short-term ones.Öğe Assessing the stochastic behavior of fishing grounds footprint of top ten fishing countries(Elsevier B.V., 2023) Adalı, Zafer; Toygar, ArdaLife on the ocean floor needs a long time to reproduce and thrive. If consumption habits continue as they are, it is likely that more than one world's resources will be needed in the near future to meet the needs of a growing population. The fishing grounds footprint (FGF) is an important environmental indicator because it reflects the water area required for marine products produced. Moreover, reformative policies and urgent actions related to the FGF have been one of the leading priorities of governments to protect biodiversity, provide sustainability of fisheries and diminish water pollution. Therefore, this study employed the FGF per capita of the 10 countries producing and catching the most fish. Accordingly, the stochastic behaviors of the FGF of these countries were examined using three areas involving the traditional unit root test (ADF, KPSS, and PP), the residual augmented ADF unit root tests (RALS-ADF), and the Fourier unit root tests (FKPSS, FADF, and FFFFF-DF). The results will be an important resource for policymakers to develop inclusive strategies and policies for marine animals and ecological life.Öğe Proposal of fishing load capacity curve and testing validity: Evidence from top 20 countries with highest fisheries production by panel data approaches(Elsevier Ltd, 2023) Pata, Uğur Korkut; Kartal, Mustafa Tevfik; Adalı, Zafer; Karlilar, SelinThis study investigates the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) and the proposed Fishing Load Capacity Curve (FLCC) for the top 20 fishing countries. To this end, the study applies second-generation panel data approaches (panel LM cointegration test, common correlated effect mean group, and Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test) for the period between 2000 and 2018. In this way, the study contributes by proposing the FLCC hypothesis, which implies that fishing load capacity (biocapacity of fishing areas divided by the footprint on those areas) first decreases with rising per capita income and then increases above a certain level of wealth. Such an approach can provide a good environmental assessment of fisheries sustainability because it considers both supply and demand aspects of water resources. The results demonstrate that both the EKC and FLCC hypotheses are valid, that fisheries production affects the quality of fishing areas, and that container port traffic has no effect on fishing load capacity.Öğe Su tüketimi ile tarım, sanayi, turizm sektörleri ilişkisi üzerine panel nedensellik analizi(Doğuş Üniversitesi, 2025) Şimşek, Orhan; Aydınbaş, GökçenSu tüketimiyle sektörlerin gerçekleştirdiği faaliyetler arasında bir bağlantı kurulması mümkündür. Bu noktada verilebilecek en önemli politika önerisi ise akıllı tarım, sanayi ve turizm teknolojileri ile su tüketiminin kontrol altına alınabileceğidir.Öğe Exploring the impact of globalization, economic complexity, urbanization, and real income on environmental degradation in E-7 countries(EGE UNIV, 2025) Şimşek, Orhan; Güler, İlkay; Özbek, Sefa; Adalı, Zafer; Naimoğlu, MustafaCurrent society has been centered on the edge of calamity induced by environmental degradation. Providing comprehensive scientific evidence and designing reliable and accurate policies have been irreparable initiatives to mitigate and reverse the effects of environmental degradation and harmonize the economy with nature. Within this addressed objective, the study explores the impact of globalization, economic complexity, urbanization, and real income on CO2 emissions, the ecological footprint, and the load capacity factor in 7 Emerging countries (E-7). The study provides comprehensive evidence regarding environmental degradation and environmental quality by handling three environmental-related indicators. The second- generation panel methods involving Durbin-Hausman panel cointegration LM Panel Bootstrap Cointegration Test AMG and CCEMG estimators and Dumitrescu and Hurlin Panel Causality Test are performed on the data spanning from 1995 to 2020. According to the investigation, the explanatory variables are cointegrated with three dependent variables. The study proves that renewable energy and globalization are pivotal factors in lessening environmental degradation and enriching environmental quality. However, urbanization and economic growth impair the environment of E-7 countries, while economic complexity is found to be a statistically significant factor for all environmental-related variables.Öğe Exploring the grazing land footprint’s stochastic behavior in the top dairy and meat-producing nations(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2025) Adalı, Zafer; Yeter, Fatih; Çoban, Mustafa Necati; Sarı, SacitThe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of influential and easily understood sustainability principles. SDG2 defines Zero Hunger, which is once again a key goal in the SDGs. A sustainable food system depends on the grazing land footprint, one of the elements of the ecological footprint. For food security to be maintained, the grazing land footprint has to be taken into consideration. In order to provide adequate global food systems and mitigate climate change, research on the stochastic features of grazing land footprint is crucial. The goal of this research is to look at the stochastic characteristics of the grazing land footprint in 13 nations that produce almost two-thirds of the world’s milk and meat. The study includes data for 13 nations over the years 1961–2022. Several unit root tests are conducted to provide more precise data about the effectiveness of the policy shocks, including whether or not they allow for repeated, smooth structural breakdowns. The results show that because the series is prone to following its long-term trends, shocks cannot lead it to diverge from those trends. Thus, any shocks brought on by policies cannot have a lasting effect on the series. However, the series includes a unit root. The unit root tests have made it clear that any policy shocks would have a long-lasting effect on the series and that policymakers may set a goal for the series. Policy suggestions have been provided for the investigated nations in conjunction with these results.Öğe Analyzing the impact of economic growth and FDI on sustainable development goals in China: Insights from ecological footprints and load capacity factors(Frontiers Media SA, 2025) Güler, İlkay; Naimoğlu, Mustafa; Şimşek, Orhan; Adalı, Zafer; Özbek, SefaThis study investigates the impact of economic growth and foreign direct investment (FDI) on China’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), specifically Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15). It examines ecological footprints and load capacity factors (LCFs) in cropland, fishing, forest, and grazing land using Fourier bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration analysis and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) estimators. The study covers the period from 1979 to 2022. Key findings reveal that while GDP and FDI often exacerbate environmental degradation, urbanization and value-added agriculture, forestry, and fishing (FAFGDP) improve sustainability in some areas. The study confirms the pollution haven hypothesis for most models, suggesting that China’s legal and regulatory frameworks may inadequately mitigate FDI’s adverse environmental effects. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is not supported as GDP growth generally increases ecological footprints. However, trade openness and urbanization show positive influences on environmental sustainability. Policy recommendations include enhancing energy efficiency, promoting renewable energy, implementing green technologies in agriculture and urban development, and revising FDI policies to incentivize environmentally friendly practices. These strategies are crucial for achieving China’s sustainable development goals and mitigating the pressures of human activities on natural resources.Öğe Examining the relationship between globalization and sustainable migration in OECD countries(Politechnika Lubelska, 2025) Nar, Mehmet Şükrü; Nar, MehmetThis study examines the relationship between migrant stock and economic-political-social globalization index values. The study uses annual data from the United Nations Migration Report, International Migration Statistics, International Migration Report and KOF globalization index for 27 OECD countries for the period 2012-2022. In the study, the sustainable migration relationship and globalization data in OECD countries are analyzed with the panel ARDL method. According to the results of the analysis, a 1% increase in economic globalization in the long run increases the migration burden of countries by 0.60%. Similarly, a 1% increase in political globalization increases the migration burden of countries by 0.06%. A 1% increase in social globalization decreases the migration burden of countries by 0.48%. The findings show that reducing social differences between countries has a decreasing effect on the migration burden of countries. However, as economic and political globalization increases, the migration burden also increases. In an economically and politically globalized world, focusing on increasing social equity and justice to manage the migration burden will contribute to the creation of more balanced and sustainable migration policies.Öğe Exploring the grazing land footprint's stochastic behavior in the top dairy and meat-producing nations(SPRINGER, 2024) Adalı, Zafer; Yeter, Fatih; Çoban, Mustafa Necati; Sarı, SacitThe Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of influential and easily understood sustainability principles. The effects of financial pressure policies on economic growth: The case of OECD countries(Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, 2024) Nar, MehmetIn this study, the effects on economic growth of financial pressure policies applied in OECD countries are examined. For this purpose, the "financial pressure index (FPI)" was calculated by using 10- year data for 2010-2020 from 37 OECD countries and "growth rates" were obtained. The FPI was calculated using (i) loans extended to the private sector, (ii) loans extended to the central government, (iii) interest payments and (iv) inflation rate data. In calculating FPI, first of all, the data was standardized. Following the standardization process, the data was weighted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to calculate the FPI. After weighting the data, each standardized value was aggregated by multiplying it by its own weighted value, and the final FPI was ultimately calculated. Economic growth rates were calculated as a percentage of GDP. Finally, the analysis was carried out by comparing the calculated FPI with the economic growth rates. According to the results of the analysis, the coefficient of FPI was statistically significant (p < 0.05). In this context, every 1-point increase in FPI reduced GDP by 0.178 points.Öğe Sustainable fisheries and the conservation of marine resources: A stochastic analysis of the fishery balance of African countries(Elsevier GmbH, 2024) Adalı, Zafer; Toygar, Arda; Karataş, Ayyüce Memiş; Yıldırım, UmutThe implementation of environmental management strategies is essential for the adoption of sustainable fishing practices and the conservation of marine resources. Management strategies can be developed by identifying common issues affecting fisheries and adopting suitable policies. This study examines the convergence hypothesis of the ecological balance of fisheries in 20 African countries from 1961 to 2018. In addition to the convergence hypothesis, the univariate stochastic properties of fishery balance are also examined. Within this context, second-generation panel unit root tests ignoring or considering the structural breaks are performed. The convergence hypothesis is tested for 20 African countries. This study will contribute to the development of standard, reliable, effective marine policies for fisheries and marine sustainability in African countries, bringing long-term benefits to the fisheries sector and marine ecosystems.Öğe Charting sustainable future on energy security, financial development, natural resources and economic output for Turkey(John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2024) Çoban, Mustafa Necati; Adalı, Zafer; Özkan, Oktay; Alola, Andrew AdewaleThe achievement of 16 out of the 123 sustainable development goals (SDGs) indicates the vast task ahead for Turkey. Addressing the aspects of ecological sustainability via the trend of the ratio of biocapacity to ecological footprint, this study seeks to examine whether energy security, financial development, natural resources and economic expansion drive Turkey's load capacity factor. By implementing quantile-on-quantile and its Granger causality dimension, the results largely affirm the statistically significant effect of energy security on the load capacity factor in all quantiles. Although this impact is weak, it is significantly positive, thus indicating that the country's energy security profile is advancing its ecological sustainability. Similarly, globalization positively impacts the load capacity factor by a strong dimension. Conversely, financial development and economic growth exert a significant but negative effect on the load capacity factor in most quantiles, which reflects the undesirability of these indicators on the country's environmental sustainability drive. Specifically, the negative effects of financial development and economic output on the load capacity factor are mainly in the middle to higher quantiles (0.4–0.95) and lowest quantiles (0.05–0.3), respectively. The results of this study can guide the development of intuitive and robust energy efficiency and energy security-related policies.
