In this study, the complete mitochondrial genomes of the Egyptian mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon) from Turkiye and the small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata) from Iraq are analyzed for the first time to explore their genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships within the Herpestidae. The mitogenomes are similar in overall organization and size (16,660 bp in H. ichneumon and 16,761 bp in U. auropunctata), with variations primarily found in the D-loop (control region), which influences genome length through repeated motifs. The Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian Inference (BI) phylogenetic analyses using complete mitochondrial genome and cytochrome b (CYTB) sequences reinforce the previous findings on Herpestidae phylogeny. Results support the division of Herpestidae into two subfamilies (Herpestinae and Mungotinae), confirm the monophyly of Urva, and highlight the paraphyly of Herpestes. Based on the complete mitogenome sequences, the Iraqi U. auropunctata specimens are clustered with Japanese and Fijian specimens, indicating low level of intraspecific variation. Herpestes ichneumon is clustered with the Galerella sanguine based on the mitogenome sequences. Additionally, H. ichneumon haplotypes are grouped into three haplogroups (Iberian, Levantine, and South African) based on the CYTB sequences, reflecting regional genetic differentiation. Molecular dating estimated Herpestidae diverges from Eupleridae similar to 30.76 million years ago (Mya), with subfamily divergence occurring in the Early Miocene (similar to 19.87 Mya). Within Urva, species begin diverging around 12.5 Mya, with U. javanica and U. auropunctata separating similar to 4.67 Mya. Recent divergence is also noted between H. ichneumon specimens from Turkiye and Lebanon (similar to 150 Kya) and among U. auropunctata populations from Iraq, Japan, and Fiji (similar to 600 Kya), supporting ongoing intraspecific diversification within both species. This study provides valuable insights into the phylogeny and evolutionary history of two mongoose species by comparing the structural and organizational features of their mitogenomes from biogeographically related regions, along with phylogenetic and evolutionary dating analyses based on complete mitogenome and CYTB sequences.Öğe Effects of fat ratio and cooking method on the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a semi-dry fermented sausage(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2025) Kırkyol, Mine; Akköse, Ahmet; Kaban, Güzin; Kaya, MükerremThe study examined the effects of fat ratios (10, 20, and 30%), cooking methods (hot plate and barbecue), and cooking degree (raw, rare, medium, or well) on the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and some physicochemical properties in a semi-dry fermented sausage, heat-treated sucuk (HTS). While the pH value increased depending on the cooking degree, moisture and fat contents decreased as the cooking degree increased. Fat ratio, cooking method, and cooking degree significantly affected the moisture retention, fat retention, and cooking yield of the samples (p < 0.01). The levels of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and total PAH4 (benzo[a]pyrene + benzo[a]anthracene + benzo[b]fluoranthene + chrysene) increased depending on the fat ratio and cooking degree. Moreover, barbecuing caused higher BaP and PAH4 formation. Similar results were also obtained for total PAH8 and PAH16 contents.Öğe Physicochemical characterization and bioactive profile of wild Demir Apple (Malus sylvestris) from the Eastern Black Sea Region(WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH, 2025) Çelebi, Zeynep Berin; Tunca, Erol; Kesemen, Ali Murat; Kolaylı, SevgiThis study characterized the physicochemical properties, bioactive composition, and antioxidant capacity of the wild Demir apple (Malus sylvestris), an endemic genotype from the Eastern Black Sea region. The formulation of these plans is governed by various criteria, encompassing population, topography, land slope, aspect, climatic conditions, transportation, and opportunities for health and education. In T & uuml;rkiye, the zoning plan governed by Law No. 3194 is developed around zoning islands, incorporating various criteria during its formulation. Within such plans, transportation networks are established through primary and intermediate roads, which are designed not according to private property boundaries but in response to the configuration of zoning islands and site-specific land conditions. Consequently, this study investigates the necessity of determining road widths with varying characteristics-such as population, precedent, height, and construction coefficient-to optimize both traffic flow and pedestrian safety. By utilizing the Least Squares Method (LSM), main road widths are treated as correction coefficients; the constant width lengths, length coefficients, and all relevant criteria of zoning blocks are expressed separately as constants and unknowns, with their relations examined. The results provide an evaluation of road network design, emphasizing that the determination of ideal road width is a critical factor in enhancing the performance of zoning plans, offering place- and evidence-based guidance to strengthen long-term functional efficacy and urban resilience.Öğe From home to health: The effectiveness of otago exercise program via telerehabilitation on fall-related outcomes in older adults(ROMANIAN ASSOC BALNEOLOGY, 2025) Şimşek, Kubilay; Alptekin, Hasan Kerem; Hatık, Sefa Haktan; Pehlivanoğlu, Berkay ErenThis study aimed to investigate the effects of the Otago Exercise Program (OEP), delivered via telerehabilitation, on pain, walking speed, lower extremity muscle strength, fear of falling, anxiety, quality of life, and balance in older adults with a history of falls. A total of 45 participants aged 65-78 were randomized into three groups: Face-to-Face Otago Exercise Group (FFOEG, n=15), Telerehabilitation-Based Otago Exercise Group (TBOEG, n=15), and Control Group (CG, n=15). The intervention consisted of 45-minute sessions, three times per week, for eight weeks. Evaluations were performed at baseline, 4th week, 8th week, and 4 weeks post-intervention using the Numeric Pain Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, 30-Second Sit- to-Stand Test, Falls Efficacy Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, WHOQOL-OLD, and Tinetti Balance and Gait Test. No significant difference was found in demographic variables between the groups (p>0.05). Intra-group analyses showed significant improvements in both intervention groups in most outcomes (p<0.05). Between-group comparisons revealed significant differences in favor of TOEG for fear of falling and balance (p<0.05). These findings support the effectiveness of OEP and suggest that telerehabilitation may be a viable alternative for delivering fall-prevention exercises to older adults in hard-to-reach areas.Öğe Molecular phylogeny of medicinal-aromatic plant Osmanthus decorus from Artvin, Türkiye(KASTAMONU UNIVERSITY, 2025) Akyıldırım Beğen, Hayal; Eminağaoğlu, Özgür; Şeker, Perinçek Seçkinozan; Selçuk, Ahmet Yesari; Yakın, Batuhan Yaman; Tekiner Aydın, Nasibe; Saral Sarıyer, Ayşegül; Sarıyer, EmrahAim of study: The white flowers of Osmanthus species have been valued for centuries in medicinal and aromatic applications due to their distinct fragrance and chemical composition. Among the 27 species distributed globally, Osmanthus decorus is the only species endemic to the Caucasus region, found in Russia, Georgia, and Türkiye. O. decorus has a distinct distribution area around Artvin but has not been sufficiently studied at the molecular level regarding its differentiation from other species. Material and method: This study focuses on identifying the molecular differences between Turkish O. decorus samples and other species while constructing their phylogenies. Phylogenetic relationships were analyzed using Bayesian inference with universal DNA barcode markers (nrDNA ITS and cpDNA matK). Main results: The nuclear and chloroplast data were consistent, and all Caucasian Osmanthus specimens clustered into a strongly supported monophyletic group. As a result of the Bayesian analysis, it was determined that O. decorus does not clearly separate from other species within the genus. Research highlights: According to the results of BLAST analysis, it was determined that the samples from Russia and Georgia, which are geographically close to the samples from Türkiye, were 100% matched.Öğe Assessing effects of forest fires on plant nutrients and biomass in northeastern Türkiye(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2025) Sağlam, Bülent; Uçarlı, Yasin; Aybar, Mustafa; Yılmaz, Fatma NurForest fires have the potential to greatly impact both flora and fauna and are therefore one of the key regulators of ecosystem sustainability. The primary aim of this research was to assess the impact of forest fires on plant nutrients and weight in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests in the Northeastern Türkiye. Plant samples were collected from designated burned and control plots in the research region in May and August season. The weight of the plants was measured both after drying in an oven and after air-drying. Subsequently, the plant samples were analyzed to determine the levels of Ca, Fe, Mg, Na, K, C, H, N, and S nutrients. The results revealed that the levels of all nutrients were greater in the burned area compared to the control plots. Furthermore, Ca, Fe, Mg, H, and N content exhibited statistically significant disparities when compared to the control plots. The N% content in the burned area during the month of May was 5.57, while in the control plot it was 4.97. This study also demonstrated that prescribed fire may effectively enhance plant nutrients contents and a tool for sustainable use of forest resources.Öğe Methylpiperazine-based 1,2,4-triazole derivatives as potent DNA gyrase b inhibitors with promising broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity(Pleiades Publishing, 2025) Uygun Cebeci, Yıldız; Keşkek Karabulut, Yasemin; Ceylan, ŞuleAbstract: The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical threat to global health, underscoring the need for new antimicrobial agents. In this study, a novel series of 1,2,4-triazole derivatives was synthesized from methylpiperazine intermediates via esterification, hydrazide formation, thiourea condensation, and Mannich-type reactions. Structural characterization was performed using FT-IR, 1H, 13C NMR, and EI-MS techniques. Antimicrobial activities of the synthesized compounds were evaluated via broth microdilution. One derivative displayed remarkable broad-spectrum activity with MIC values <0.24 µg/mL against E. coli, S. aureus, M. smegmatis, and C. albicans. Molecular docking against E. coli DNA gyrase B (PDB: 4PRV) revealed strong binding affinities for two derivatives (–9.9 and –9.8 kcal/mol), correlating well with in vitro results. Key interactions included hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and halogen bonding. SAR analysis emphasized the role of electron-withdrawing and hydrophobic groups in enhancing activity. These triazole derivatives show promise as potent antimicrobial candidates targeting DNA gyrase B.Öğe Molecular diversity of lupane hybrids in drug design and materials science(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2025) Lipson, Victoria V.; Shirobokova, Maria G.; Gümüş, Mustafa Kemal; Öztürkcan, Arda; Chebanov, Valentyn A.The need for new, more effective drugs to treat cancer, infectious diseases, various parasitic infestations, and metabolic disorders requires innovative approaches to the design of promising molecules. One of these areas is the creation of hybrid structures. Lupane triterpenoids are of significant interest for such research due to their high abundance in natural sources and their renewable nature, their molecular architecture, presence of several easily modifiable functional groups, enantiomeric purity, broad spectrum of biological activity, and low toxicity. Active research into the biological properties of new pentacyclic triterpenoid derivatives, not only of the lupane series but also of the oleonane and ursane series, is evidenced by the large number of reviews and experimental studies devoted to this topic. Our interest in the modification of lupanoids stems not only from the search for biologically active compounds but also from the development of functional materials. However, the materials science aspects of lupanoid applications are virtually unknown in literature. We have tried to fill this gap and examined the possibility of using betulin derivatives to create advanced materials. The high lipophilicity and nanoscale molecular structure of these compounds make them highly promising as chiral dopants in liquid crystal compositions and organogel components.Öğe Taguchi based parameters optimization in electrospray cooling with mixed working fluids(Pushpa Publishing House, 2025) Kabakuş, AbdüssamedThe rapid increase in power density of modern electronic devices has made compact and effective cooling strategies indispensable. In this work, the Taguchi experimental design method was employed to optimize electrospray cooling performance. Experiments were conducted with a constant nozzle diameter and a fixed nozzle-to-heat sink distance, using three different working fluids (100% ethanol, 90% ethanol-10% water, and 80% ethanol-20% water), flow rates between 0.3-0.5 ml/min, and applied voltages ranging from 6-10 V. The temperature difference (ΔT) was used as the primary evaluation parameter. Analysis of variance indicated that fluid composition and flow rate significantly influence cooling efficiency, whereas voltage plays a relatively minor role. The most favorable operating condition was identified as 80% ethanol-20% water at 0.5 ml/min and 6 V.Öğe Morphological, linear and geometric morphometric differences of Anatolian Sorex (Mammalia: Soricidae) species(Elsevier GmbH, 2025) Selçuk, Ahmet Yesari; Kaya, Alaettin; İbiş, Osman; Tez, Coşkun; Kefelioğlu, HalukThe taxonomic complexity of Sorex species is largely due to their morphological similarity. The different approaches used in taxonomic studies have both advantages and disadvantages. In this study, Sorex volnuchini, Sorex raddei and Sorex satunini specimens were compared using morphological features (molar teeth), mechanical potential (bite force), linear morphometric and geometric morphometric analysis. No pigmentation was detected in the hypoconic region of the first upper molar in the samples of S. volnuchini. In contrast, the pigmentation in the hypoconic region showed variability in the samples of S. raddei and S. satunini. In linear morphometric analyses, the linear measurement results of craniodental and mandibular characters for S. raddei and S. satunini overlapped many characters. However, regarding linear measurements, S. volnuchini was separated from these species (p < 0.01). Based on both linear morphometrics and centroid size (geometric morphometrics), it was determined that S. volnuchini was smaller than other the Sorex species, and similarly, it was also determined that S. volnuchini had a lower bite force (mechanical potential) than other Sorex species. There was no correlation between bite force and centroid size (CS) within the species. However, pairwise comparisons determined a statistically significant difference among the species. The Jackknifed classification rate was over 92 % in linear morphometric analysis. As a result of geometric morphometric analysis, the order of the centroid size for the skull (ventral and dorsal) and the mandible was Neomys milleri > S. raddei > S. satunini > Sorex volncuhini. No significant difference was found between S. raddei and S. satunini in centroid size for only dorsal skull. Allometric growth, which varies in shape with size, was not observed in the skull (ventral and dorsal) and mandible. N. milleri, S. raddei, S. satunini and S. volnuchini differed according to the Procrustes and Mahalanobis distance (p < 0.05). Three dendrograms of morphological (ventral and dorsal skull, mandible) proximity showed a similar topology.
