dc.description.abstractThe forests of the world have been decreasing since the earliest known date in a continuous manner. Although the main thing that is responsible for this decrease is considered as human behaviors; insects, fungi, and other similar harmful pests also cause significant destruction. While the forestry organization struggles with other biotic pests, it is also trying to avoid anthropogenic (human-induced) damage. Being informed about the fires, insect outbreaks etc. that occur in forest areas as soon as possible and running the fight by taking the support of people are of crucial importance in this respect. In this context, it is necessary to increase the level of knowledge and awareness of all parts of the society. In addition, facilities built in forest areas to fight the pests must be preserved by-or at least not damaged by- the people who live in these areas, such as traps and birdhouses and similar equipment and tools. In this study, firstly, the knowledge level of the people living in the study area on forest pests was questioned. In addition, it was also questioned whether the forestry organization has efforts to inform people and involve them in the processes. Again, the facilities and equipment built in forest areas for protection purposes and the possible damage to them were also determined in the context of the present study. It was determined that only half of the people living in the rural areas of Artvin in Turkey where damages of pests have been seen for more than 60 years had information about the forest pests. According to the participants, the forest administration does not work in an effective manner to inform people; and even worse than this, 70% of the people think that forestry management is damaging state forests. Though in a small number, some people also believe that the lack of knowledge of the people cause damage to the equipment established by the forest administration. In order to be successful in protecting the forests, firstly the authorities of the forest administration should act together with the people of the area. The people of the area should be informed about the fight performed by the forest administration; and the contribution of this administration must be considered important. In this way, the level of success will increase in the fight against pests.
