This study aims to examine the working conditions and the health and safety risks faced by workers in Türkiye’s plastic recycling sector. Recycling has become a political obligation in many countries. Türkiye’s status as a major importer of plastic waste, along with the illegal influx of such waste, has contributed to the rapid expansion of the plastic recycling sector. The uncontrolled growth of this sector has created an informal plastic recycling economy. This situation causes plastic recycling workers to work in unhealthy and unsafe conditions. In this sector; occupational accidents and occupational diseases, long working hours, low wages, unskilled labor demand, migrant and child labor and informal work are common. Plastic recycling, which is offered within the scope of green business, has started to rise as an environmentally friendly application. However, the mixing of toxic chemicals contained in plastics into the atmosphere during recycling increases greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, a fair transformation that protects both the environment and workers should be planned for the solution of the climate crisis. Before the green transition, it is necessary to take into account the needs and opportunities as well as the risks. The most important way to eliminate the harms of plastic waste is to permanently reduce plastic production and consumption.
