    Renewable energy production in Artvin Çoruh University ANG Botanical Garden: Potential, application and challenges

    This study evaluates the capability of renewable energy sources (wind, solar and biomass) to meet the energy needs of Artvin Coruh University Ali Nihat Gokyigit Botanical Garden. As a result of the study, it has been determined that the wind speed in the region is insufficient for electricity generation from wind energy, as 0.0845 kW/h. In the analyses performed on the PVsol environment for the potential of a PV system, it has been concluded that 256.9 MWh of energy could be generated annually. The economic analyses resulted in the payback period of the PV system being calculated as 8.8 years. It was also suggested that the annual average of 3500-5000 kg of pruning waste could be utilised by elemental analysis and incineration or used for biogas production by anaerobic digestion together with food waste (27 tonnes/year). The study aims to raise awareness for on-site energy production by using local resources and thus reducing energy costs.

    Comparison of reba, rula and owas ergonomic risk assessment methods: An example of a car tire business

    Ergonomics has an important place in the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. In order to prevent musculoskeletal disorders, it is necessary to identify all risk factors that occur during work. This study was conducted to examine and compare the working postures of employees in an auto tire company in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey while changing tires with REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment), RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment) and OWAS (Owako Working Position Analysis System) ergonomic risk analysis methods. The data of the study were obtained by the researcher by taking photographs of the employees and written consent of the employees was obtained. It was determined that auto tire workers exhibit seven different working postures due to their work. When the ergonomic risk assessment results of the employees for seven different working postures were analyzed, it was seen that REBA, RULA and OWAS ergonomic risk assessment methods did not give the same results. In addition, in this study, OWAS and REBA final scores were lower than RULA final scores. It is thought that this study will be a sample guide for occupational physicians, occupational safety specialists, and graduate and doctoral students working with the musculoskeletal system.

    Effects of unionization on work accidents: Türkiye example

    Unions are one of the important non-governmental organizations that negotiate between employers and employees, such as providing protective equipment to employees and participating in joint health and safety committees. In this study, it is aimed to examine the relationship between the level of unionization and occupational accidents in Turkey. The data were obtained from the Statistical Yearbooks of the Social Security Institution between the years 2014-2021 and the work life statistics book of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. JAMOVI 2.3.28 software program was used in the statistical analysis of the data. The significance level was taken as 0.05. It has been determined that there is a linear increase in unionization rates and the number of insured workers from 2014 to 2021. While a positive, statistically significant and strong relationship was found between the number of unionized workers and the number of occupational accidents (r=0.952; p˂.001), no statistically significant relationship was found between the total number of unionized workers and fatal occupational accidents (-0.398; p=0.239). In addition, it has been found that the number of unionized workers is dependent on occupational accidents and there is a linear relationship. As a result, it was concluded that unionization did not have a positive effect on occupational accidents.

    Sürdürülebilir kalkınmanın göz ardı edilen aktörleri: Türkiye’de plastik geri dönüşüm işçileri

    Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de plastik geri dönüşüm sektöründe çalışan işçilerin çalışma koşullarını ve sağlık ve güvenlik risklerini açığa çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Geri dönüşümün pek çok ülkede politik bir zorunluluk haline gelmesi, Türkiye’nin önemli bir plastik atık ithalatçısı olması ve yasa dışı yollarla Türkiye’ye gönderilen plastik atıklar, plastik geri dönüşüm sektörünü giderek büyütmüştür. Bu sektörün kontrolsüzce büyümesi, kayıt dışı bir plastik geri dönüşüm ekonomisi oluşturmuştur. Bu durum, plastik geri dönüşüm işçilerinin sağlıksız ve güvensiz şartlarda çalışmasına neden olmaktadır. Bu sektörde; iş kazaları ve meslek hastalıkları, uzun çalışma saatleri, düşük ücretler, vasıfsız işçi talebi, göçmen ve çocuk işçiliği ve kayıt dışı çalışma yaygındır. Yeşil iş kapsamında sunulan plastik geri dönüşümü çevre dostu bir uygulama olarak yükselişe geçse de plastiklerin içerdikleri toksik kimyasalların geri dönüşüm esnasında atmosfere karışması sera gazı emisyonlarını da artırmaktadır. Bu bağlamda iklim krizinin çözümü için hem çevreyi hem de işçileri koruyan adil bir dönüşüm planlanmalıdır. Yeşil geçiş öncesinde ihtiyaçların ve fırsatlar kadar risklerin de göz önünde bulundurulması gerekmektedir. Plastik atıkların zararlarını ortadan kaldırmanın en önemli yolu, plastik üretimi ve tüketiminin kalıcı olarak azaltılmasıdır.

    Zamansız ve mekânsız çalışma: Özel ve kamusal alan kıskacındaki akademisyen kadınların üretkenlik krizi üzerine nitel bir araştırma

    Toplumsal cinsiyete dayalı işbölümünün kadınları ücretsiz ev içi emeğin merkezine alması, istihdama katılan kadınların ikili bir emek sürecine maruz kalmalarına yol açmaktadır. Akademisyenliğin zamandan ve mekândan bağımsız çalışma ile zihinsel ve entelektüel üretkenlik gerektirmesi ise akademisyen kadınların emek sürecini daha da yoğunlaştırmakta ve üretkenlik krizine neden olmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, akademisyen kadınların ücretli ve ücretsiz emek faaliyetlerinin neden olduğu aşırı çalışmaya bağlı olarak yaşadıkları sorunların ortaya çıkarılması amaçlanmaktadır. Bu bağlamda 10 akademisyen kadınla yüz yüze derinlemesine görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Akademisyen kadınların aşırı mesai nedeniyle üretkenlik krizi, annelik ve zaman baskısı, özel ve kamusal alanda verimsizlik ve kariyer sorunları yaşadıkları anlaşılmıştır. Tüm bunlar akademisyen kadınların yaşam kaliteleri ve sağlıkları üzerinde olumsuz etkiye neden olmaktadır.

    Exploring innovation in healthcare: the mediating role of safety perception between organizational climate and innovative work behavior

    A more suitable organizational climate needs to be created for healthcare workers to be able to exhibit innovative work behaviors. Employees who meet their professional and work requirements in a safe workplace in peace will be able to exhibit more innovative behaviors. In this context, this study investigates the impact of healthcare personnel's perceptions of organizational climate in public hospitals on their innovative work behaviors. Furthermore, it seeks to determine whether perceptions of safety indirectly influence this relationship. The study used convenience sampling and a survey method to collect data from 202 healthcare workers employed in Artvin Province, Türkiye. The results of the analysis revealed, that perceptions of organizational climate positively and significantly influence innovative work behaviors (ϸ = 0.529, 95 % CI [0.425, 0.685]). A notable finding of the study is that perceptions of organizational climate exert a significant and substantial indirect effect on innovative work behaviors (ϸ = 0.184, 95 % CI [0.055, 0.2966]) through safety perceptions.

    Measuring zero waste consciousness: Development and psychometric properties of a multidimensional scale

    Escalating waste generation and resource depletion necessitate zero waste (ZW) approaches rooted in circular economy (CE) and sustainability. Successfully implementing these requires measuring individual ZW consciousness, yet valid, multidimensional scales are limited. This study addresses this gap by developing and validating the Zero Waste Consciousness Scale (ZWCS). The systematic process involved: (1) item pool creation from literature; (2) expert content validation (N = 6); (3) data collection from two distinct samples (pilot N = 462, validation N = 500) using a 5-point Likert scale and (4) exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for psychometric evaluation. EFA revealed a novel six-factor structure (‘Motivation and Awareness’, ‘Existing Infrastructure’, ‘Knowledge’, ‘Behaviour’, ‘Intention’, ‘Practice’) with 34 items, explaining 64.75% of total variance. CFA confirmed good model fit (χ²/df = 3.00, RMSEA = 0.07, CFI/TLI/IFI = 0.90). Reliability analyses showed high internal consistency. The ZWCS is a psychometrically sound, valid and reliable multidimensional instrument, filling a distinct gap for measuring ZW consciousness. This novel tool offers potential for research, evaluation and policy-making related to ZW, CE and sustainability.

    The state of the art of nuclear energy: Pros and cons

    Nuclear power plants, which started to be used in the military field in the 19th century, began to be used in electricity generation due to the oil crisis and increasing electricity need. It has many advantages as well as some disadvantages. Commonly used fossil, hydraulic, wind and solar energy systems likewise have both advantages and disadvantages. The emission of nuclear radiation is the most important risk. If there is no radiation emission, it will cause a less bad impact even if an accident happens. Also, waste management will be easier. With the development of technology, the production of new generation reactors can ensure that some disadvantages are eliminated or minimized. When looking at the studies carried out in WOS, studies on nuclear energy are more than environmental issues (waste management and occupational health). However, more studies should be carried out on two problems (waste management and occupational health) that are important in the operation of nuclear power plants.

    Genetic variations of renin-angiotensin and fibrinolytic systems and susceptibility to coronary artery disease: A population genetics perspective

    BACKGROUND: Genetic predisposition is an important risk factor in coronary artery disease (CAD).This study was conducted to determine the polymorphism frequencies of the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1(PAI-1) gene 4G/5G, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene I/D, and angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1) gene A1166C genotypes and to examine the role of these polymorphisms in CAD. METHODS: Genomic DNAs obtained from 260 subjects (130 CAD patients and 130 control) were used in the study. ACE I/D and PAI-1 4G/5G polymorphism genotypes were determined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electrophoresis. AT-1 A1166C polymorphism was determined using the PCR, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and electrophoresis. The products amplified from AT1 gene by PCR were cut with HindIII restriction endonuclease and then analyzed by 2% agarose gel electrophoresis. The results were statistically analyzed with the chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and independent two-sample t-test. RESULTS: Allele frequencies showed statistically significant differences between the patient and control groups. There was no statistically significant difference in ACEI/D genotype frequencies between the twogroups. Likewise, no statistically significant difference was found in the AT1 A1166C genotype frequencies; however, a statistically significant difference was found in allele frequencies. The PAI-1 4G/5G genotype frequency was significantly higher in the patient group. CONCLUSIONS: While there is a relationship between of PAI-1 gene 4G/5G polymorphism and CAD, ACE gene I/D and AT1 gene A1166C polymorphisms are not related. PAI-1 gene homozygous genotypes may be considered as a prognostic marker for CAD patients.

    Determination of the gynogenetic reproduction character of carassius gibelio in Uluabat Lake

    The purpose of this study was to examine the status of ginogetic population Uluabat Lake Carassius gibelio. In this study, 466 individuals were caught per month between March 2006 and February 2007. It has been determined that 65% of the obtained samples are comprised of females, 34% is comprised of males and 1% is comprised of individuals, which are not mature sexually. Chromosome photographs were shoot by preparing chromosome preparations from the gills of 5 female individuals caught in the lake and in the chromosome remuneration based on these photographs it has been observed that 4 individuals has 2n = 100 chromosomes whereas one individual has 3n = 156 chromosomes. This result indicates that the C. gibelio population in Uluabat Lake is comprised of different colonies including diploid and triploid individuals.

    Sound level measurement and spectrum analysis in full and empty various social spaces

    The noise seen in different areas throughout human history has turned into a frequently complained problem with the increasing industry and technology. Unfortunately, the problem of noise has become a part of social life today. Noise pollution, which is a side effect of urbanization and industrialization, threatens society's mental and physical health. However, knowing the noise level makes it possible to take precautions. In some cases where the sound limit levels set by laws and/or regulations of many countries are not exceeded, people may complain about the noise. Noises that occur in different places in educational institutions such as universities can cause adverse effects on both students and the administrative and academic staff working there. The noise in the places where the staff and students spend their time both for relieving their hunger and resting and socializing during their rest periods prevents people from relaxing. This situation causes people not to feel rested when returning to their lessons or work. In this analysis, the Artvin Coruh University staff dining hall's sound levels, the student dining hall, and the cafeteria/bowling alley spaces used by the students were measured when they were empty and full. Besides, the bandgap of the sounds complained about by the users was determined by spectrum analysis. As a result of the study, noise levels of 29.43 dB(A), 30.75 dB(A), and 32.94 dB(A) were obtained in the measurements made in empty spaces, and 56.10 dB(A), 57.56 dB(A)and 69.76 dB(A) in the measurements made in filled areas.

    Waste paper inventory study within the scope of zero waste for public institutions: an example of Artvin Çoruh University

    The paper was discovered and spread to the world by the Chinese Civilization about 2000 years ago. Although electronic media is used instead of paper, the use of paper continues to be used for magazines, journals, essential documents, records, and books. Besides, the use of paper for various packages is quite high. The raw material of the paper consists mainly of wood. Hence, the use of waste paper as the raw material in the manufacture of paper is growing nowadays. As a consequence, the storage, transportation, and recycling of waste paper have become an issue of waste management. The amount of paper waste in universities, one of the public institutions, was investigated in this study. Waste papers collected from the Seyitler and City Campuses of Artvin Coruh University was tracked for one year. It was calculated from the study that a total of 2,179 kg of paper waste was obtained in one year. It was found that the monthly average per person was 0.045 kg and the annual average was 0.49 kg. It was observed that the papers were collected in a temporary storage area and given to scrap paper collectors at certain periods. This study is aimed to be a pioneering study of waste paper inventory studies to be carried out in public institutions aiming at zero waste.

    Determining the disaster preparedness of university staff: The case of Artvin Coruh University, Turkey

    This research undertaking ascertains the preparedness and perception of academic and administrative personnel at Artvin Çoruh University regarding disaster risk. For this study, a descriptive and cross-sectional research approach was used. The study population comprises academic and administrative personnel employed at the university. The sampling methodology did not apply any specific method, and the study comprised 218 employees who willingly agreed to participate. However, because of the presence of individuals who provided partial responses in the questionnaires, the total number of participants included in the study sample was reduced to 215. A statistically significant correlation was identified, as measured by the DPS total score, between the gender of the faculty and staff and their knowledge of emergency action plans at the university. A statistically significant link was discovered between the DRPS total score and the likelihood of experiencing a disaster, material loss, and the consideration of relocation to avoid disaster risk. A statistically significant relationship was found between the DPS total score and the status of receiving disaster training, compulsory disaster insurance of the house of residence, and disaster preparation. This study also investigated the correlation between the DRPS and DPS total scores of university workers and their age. A statistically insignificant correlation was observed between the DRPS and DPS total scores. In this regard, it is advised that staff members of the institutions participate in frequent repetitions of disaster awareness training and drills.

    Investigation of the relationship between disaster risk perception and sustainable earthquake awareness of nursing students

    This study aimed to assess the perception of disaster risk and the level of earthquake awareness among students enrolled in the Department of Nursing at Artvin Çoruh University, Faculty of Health Sciences. The study sample comprised 274 students enrolled in the Department of Nursing at Artvin Çoruh University, Faculty of Health Sciences. The data were gathered utilizing the Sociodemographic Characteristics Form, Disaster Risk Perception Scale, and Sustainable Earthquake Awareness Scale. The data was obtained using the SPSS 24.0 program and analyzed using t tests, One-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analyses. The study's findings indicate that most students have yet to undergo disaster training, yet most are interested in such training. Furthermore, it was ascertained that most students had not encountered any calamity. However, they wanted to participate actively and voluntarily in disaster scenarios. A statistically significant difference was observed between the students' class and the average total scores of disaster risk perception scale and sustainable earthquake awareness scale. Courses on disaster management should be added to nursing education curricula. In order to provide disaster risk perception and sustainable earthquake awareness to nursing students, they need to take part in different activities in the field of disaster management.

    The effect of ergonomics training given to office workers on musculoskeletal disorders and working postures

    Objectives. This study aimed to determine the impact of ergonomics training given to office workers on their risk scores for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and their working postures. Methods. The study was conducted in a university located in a province in the east of Turkey’s Black Sea region, with a total of 60 office workers randomly assigned to two groups (30 in the experimental group, 30 in the control group). The results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Friedman tests. Results. After the training, there was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the average scores of rapid office strain assessment (ROSA), rapid upper limb assessment (RULA), and spine and upper extremity discomfort, whereas no significant change was found in lower extremity discomfort (p > 0.05). In pairwise comparisons, 1 week after the training there was a decrease in the average scores of ROSA and RULA compared to before the training (p < 0.001), and this trend was maintained in the RULA score average after 12 weeks (p < 0.001), while it could not be maintained in the ROSA score average (p > 0.05). Conclusion. The ergonomics training intervention provided to the office employees was effective in improving their working postures and reducing MSDs, thereby creating awareness.

    Preventing organ injury with carvacrol after renal ischemia/reperfusion

    In this study, antioxidant enzyme activities and the histopathologic structure of rats were examined in order to determine the injury that occurs in the liver after renal I/R. There were 5 groups: Group I (Control), Group II (Right nephrectomy + untreated control), Group III (Right nephrectomy + I/R and olive oil treated), Group IV (Right nephrectomy + I/R and 25 mg.kg -1 carvacrol + olive oil treated group), Group V (Right nephrectomy + I/R and 50 mg.kg -1 carvacrol + olive oil treated group). 45 min of Ischemia and 24 h of Reperfusion were applied to all groups of rats except Group I. Liver CAT, SOD, Gpx enzyme activity and AST, ALT levels were evaluated at the end of the experiment and values close to the control group were obtained for rats to which 50 mg.kg -1 of carvacrol was administered. Significant injuries such as cellular degenerative changes, sinusoidal congestion and cytoplasmic vacuolation were determined for Group II in light microscopic examinations of liver sections. 25 mg.kg -1 of carvacrol dose was found to be protective in Group IV.

    Effects of wooden and plastic toys on indoor air quality in kindergartens

    This study was conducted in a kindergarten classroom in the Ayancik district of Sinop province, Türkiye, and examined indoor air quality under five scenarios. The measured parameters included formaldehyde, TVOC(total volatile organic compounds), PM10 and PM2.5 (particulates),humidity, temperature, airflow velocity, and illumination level. The study found that using wood and plastic materials, such as toys, tables, andchairs, significantly influenced the indoor air quality in the kindergarten environment. Wood materials reduced formaldehyde, TVOC, and particulate matter (PM) levels. Formaldehyde levels ranged from 0.03 to0.22 ppm, TVOC values from 0.001 to 0.003 mg/m³, PM10 levels from 16to 52 µg/m³, and PM2.5 levels from 15 to 46 µg/m³. In Scenario 5, the lowest levels of formaldehyde and TVOC were recorded. These findings offer important insights for improving air quality in kindergartens and provide a foundation for future research. Careful selection of toys, design elements, and materials in kindergarten classrooms is critical for protecting children’s health and promoting development. Prioritizing high-quality indoor air in these environments is essential for enhancing children's learning, health, and overall well-being.     Assessment of lighting in medical facilities from an occupational health perspective

    Although workplace lighting improves employee satisfaction and performance, it may also harm health. It has been established that the lighting in hospitals influences the productivity of the staff. and patient healing ability. This study aimed to assess hospital lighting conditions and determine their impacts. During the first part of the study, lighting measurements were taken and evaluated in compliance with the TS EN 12,464-1: 2021-09 criteria in October and November of 2021. In the second step, 360 people were surveyed to evaluate employee opinions on lighting conditions. The maximum and minimum lighting levels were recorded at different hospital locations. Most participants worked in night shift, with an average age of 36.19 years and an average working time of 9 years. Overall, it was reported that the working and circulation spaces were well-lit. However, falls, cuts, fractures, sprains, bruises, and contusions were the most common lighting-related problems reported by the participants. According to the results, 15.5% of the participants experienced an occupational accident due to lighting. Therefore, modifying hospital lighting standards and implementing steps to protect personnel health are critical.

    Assessing the risk and effect of climate change with two-layer fuzzy logic-SWARA: A comparative practice in Turkiye

    Many factors such as population growth, development of industry/technology, and increase in production-consumption disrupt the ecological balance and cause climate change, which is a global problem. Determining the criteria that cause climate change is very important in finding effective solutions to the problem. In the study, the criteria were determined, weighted with a new method, Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA), and ranked according to their priorities with two-layer fuzzy logic model. The Fuzzy SWARA method allows the evaluation process, which becomes complicated due to the difficulties and factors experienced in decision-making, to be carried out more effectively and realistically. The risk and effect of climate change in Turkiye were evaluated regionally. However, the developed model also has a wide application area. Research findings revealed that the highest risk/effect of climate change have the Marmara and Central Anatolia regions. The lowest risk region is the Eastern Anatolia. Air pollution, population growth and deforestation have the highest weights. Important suggestions have presented especially for priority criteria. In this way, the factors that should be prioritized in climate change environmental problem solutions have been revealed and will make it easier for researchers and managers to provide more effective management.
