This paper presents a comprehensive mixed-methods analysis of the perceptions of ethnolinguistic vitality among speakers of Khalaj, an endangered language spoken in Central Iran. Iran’s adoption of a monolingual policy that promotes Persian across nearly all social domains has led to a significant reduction in the social spaces where Khalaj is used, ultimately impacting its ethnolinguistic vitality. Grounded in Giles & Bourhis & Taylor’s (1977) ethnolinguistic vitality theory, this study aims to explore whether Khalaj-speaking communities perceive the vitality of their language as low or high. Through this theoretical framework, the research seeks to uncover the community’s attitudes and perceptions regarding the current state and future prospects of the Khalaj language. The quantitative data was gathered via a “subjective vitality questionnaire” (Bourhis & Giles & Rosenthal 1981). This questionnaire was administered to 249 Khalaj participants. The findings revealed that the Khalaj participants believed the ethnolinguistic vitality of the Khalaj language to be as low, while they perceived the vitality of Persian, the socially-dominant language, as high.
