Öğe Academic procrastination, school attachment, and life satisfaction: a mediation model(Springer, 2020) Çıkrıkçı, Özkan; Erzen, EvrenThe aim of the current study was to investigate the associations between school attachment, academic procrastination and life satisfaction and the mediating efect of academic procrastination. The mediation model was tested with 324 adolescents [173(53.4%) female, 151(46.6%) male, Mage=17.07, SD=2.28]. School Attachment Scale, Academic Procrastination Scale, and Satisfaction with Life Scale were flled out. The results indicated that there were signifcant associations among school attachment, academic procrastination, and life satisfaction. Mediation analysis revealed that academic procrastination partially mediated the school attachment-life satisfaction association. Additionally, school attachment had a signifcant indirect efect on life satisfaction through academic procrastination. Overall, the results show that school attachment contributes to a reduction in academic procrastination and an increase in life satisfaction. In this respect, it can be said that attachment to school has a therapeutic value for students.Öğe Attitude toward Computers and Critical Thinking of Postgraduate Students as Predictors of Research Self-Efficacy(Routledge Journals, 2021) Odacı, Hatice; Erzen, EvrenThe purpose of this study was to examine to what extent the attitude toward computers and disposition to critical thinking of postgraduate students in the field of educational sciences predicted their research self-efficacy and to investigate the difference in these variables on the basis of students’ postgraduate education levels. Participants were 197 postgraduate students in the field of educational sciences in eight different public universities in Turkey: 105 (53.3%) doctoral students, 92 (46.7%) master’s students. The results revealed a significant positive attitude between research self-efficacy and critical thinking. The results also showed that attitude toward computers and critical thinking accounted for 3% of total research self-efficacy variation; and that of these two variables, critical thinking made a significant contribution to the model. Based on ongoing levels of education, there was a significant difference between the research self-efficacies of master’s and doctoral students. The source of this variation was attributed to doctoral students’ research self-efficacy scores being significantly higher than those of master’s students. Additionally, results showed a significant difference between attitudes toward computers of master’s and doctoral students.Öğe Determinants of phubbing, which is the sum of many virtual addictions: A structural equation model(Akademiai Kiado Zrt, 2015) Karadağ, Engin; Tosuntaş, Şule Betül; Erzen, Evren; Duru, Pınar; Bostan, Nalan; Şahin, Berrak Mızrak; Çulha, İlkayBackground and aims: Phubbing can be described as an individual looking at his or her mobile phone during a conversation with other individuals, dealing with the mobile phone and escaping from interpersonal communication. In this research, determinants of phubbing behavior were investigated; in addition, the effects of gender, smart phone ownership and social media membership were tested as moderators. Methods: To examine the cause-effect relations among the variables of the theoretical model, the research employs a correlational design. Participants were 409 university students who were selected via random sampling. Phubbing was obtained via the scales featuring mobile phone addiction, SMS addiction, internet addiction, social media addiction and game addiction. The obtained data were analyzed using a correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and structural equation model. Results: The results showed that the most important determinants of phubbing behavior are mobile phone, SMS, social media and internet addictions. Discussion: Although the findings show that the highest correlation value explaining phubbing is a mobile phone addiction, the other correlation values reflect a dependency on the phone. Conclusions: There is an increasing tendency towards mobile phone use, and this tendency prepares the basis of phubbing.Öğe The effect of loneliness on depression: A meta-analysis(Sage Publications, 2018) Erzen, Evren; Çıkrıkçı, ÖzkanBackground: Negative emotions, which have a common, chronic and recurrent structure, play a vital role in the development and maintenance of psychopathology. In this study, loneliness as a negative emotion was considered to be a predisposing factor in depression.Öğe The effect of the attachment styles and self-efficacy of adolescents preparing for university entrance tests in Turkey on predicting test anxiety(Routledge, 2016) Erzen, Evren; Odacı, HaticeThe purpose of this study was to determine the effect of attachment styles and self-efficacy of adolescents preparing for university entrance exams in Turkey on predicting test anxieties. The study group consisted of 884 final-year high school students (423 female and 461 male) attending different types of high school, preparing for university entrance exams and aged between 16 and 19. Participants were administered the Relationship Scales Questionnaire, the Self-Efficacy Scale and the Test Anxiety Inventory in groups in a classroom environment for data collection. Results showed that test anxiety is significantly correlated with self-efficacy and attachment styles. Dismissing, fearful and secure attachment styles and self-efficacy have the potential to predict test anxiety. In addition, the variable of gender was determined as influencing factors in test anxiety.Öğe Effects of personality traits, social support and self-efficacy on predicting university adjustment(Sage Publications, 2021) Erzen, Evren; Özabacı, NilüferThe current study examined the relationship between personality traits, social support perceptions, academic selfefficacy and the adjustment to university. Participants were 992 university students (615 [62%] female, 377 [38%]) male. Results showed that social support, conscientiousness, extraversion and at low levels agreeableness predicted friendship adjustment, while academic self-efficacy and conscientiousness predicted academic adjustment. Academic self-efficacy, social support, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness traits were determined to affect prediction of general adjustment to university. The significance and limitations of the results are discussed.Öğe Gender differences on academic procrastination: Meta-analysis(Hacettepe Univ, 2016) Çıkrıkçı, Özkan; Erzen, EvrenIn current meta-analysis study, the effect of gender on academic procrastination was tested. First of all, studies obtained by literature review were collected in a pool (N = 97). At the end of the investigations in line with the criteria determined by researchers, 25 studies were included in the analysis. The results of random effect model revealed that gender has a low-level effect on academic procrastination (f=25, d= .25, p<.001, SEd= .05). Research groups (high school and university), research country (Turkey, others) research types (thesis or article) were determined as moderator variables within the present study. Only research country variable was determined as moderator variable (Qb= 15.48, df= 1, p<.05). According to the research results, gender is a variable that causes an effect on academic procrastination. In addition, there is a significant difference between research in Turkey and others with regard to the effect of gender on academic procrastination.Öğe Gender roles and personality predictors of life satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic: A crosscultural analysis(Erzincan Üniversitesi, 2024) Erzen, Evren; Martskvishvili, Khatuna; Karaduman, Muhammet Ali; Laghidze, NatoCOVID-19 is a global pandemic that has had significant effects on societies, even though its effects have largely diminished. The psychological state of individuals who cannot leave their homes for long periods during the lockdown practices implemented in many countries is a special situation that needs to be examined. Women and men who stay together at home for long periods may experience conflict with other people. The extent to which this situation is related to the personality traits and gender roles of individuals is a subject of research. For this reason, this study investigates the predictive power of personality traits and gender roles on life satisfaction during the lockdown period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study group consists of 571 participants (Female: 327, 42.73%; Male: 244, 57.27%) selected from Türkiye and Georgia, aged between 18 and 50 (Meanage: 21.89, df: 4.09). The results show that adopting feminine and masculine gender roles in both cultures contributes to an increase in individuals' life satisfaction levels, while having neurotic personality traits causes individuals' life satisfaction levels to decrease. However, in Georgia, being extraverted, conscientious, emotionally stable, and exhibiting the characteristics of feminine and masculine gender roles were seen as predictors of life satisfaction, while in Türkiye, being emotionally stable and adopting the feminine gender role were determined as variables that increased life satisfaction. The results obtained were discussed in line with the literature.Öğe Phubbing: Which personality traits are prone to phubbing?(Sage Publications, 2021) Erzen, Evren; Odacı, Hatice; Yeniçeri, İlknurSmartphones play an important role in our lives thanks to the opportunities they offer in terms of access, interaction, and communication. However, in addition to these positive aspects, smartphones have transformed into objects of dependence due to gaming, social media, and access to the Internet and are beginning to harm the quality of face-to-face communications that take place between different individuals. The current study examined the relationship between Big Five Personality Traits and phubbing. Participants were 545 university students (383((71%)) female, 156((29%)) male, M (age) = 18.84, SD = 1.18) who completed the questionnaire package of the Big Five Personality Inventory and the Phubbing Scale. A hierarchical regression analysis was used with Big Five Personality Traits to explain variance in phubbing. The results showed that neuroticism and conscientiousness were significant predictors of phubbing, which account for 7% of the total variance. In the study, it was determined that the participants consisted of individuals with high levels of income, daily access to the Internet and social media users. Results are discussed in light of the literature.Öğe Predictors of phubbing: Interpersonal relationships and family relationships(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Odacı, Hatice; Erzen, Evren; Yeniçeri, İlknurThe present study examined the interpersonal relationship styles and the predictive power of family relationships on phubbing. The sample consists of 8 teachers from different branches. These teachers were selected from two schools with the best and the worst professional development conditions in line with extreme or deviant case sampling. Semi structured interview form was employed as the data collection tool. Firstly, the study analyses self-development opportunities of the teachers within the education system and the schools. Secondly, it addresses the perceptions of the teachers about the teacher development roles in the schools. Lastly, it investigates the professional development problems of the teachers that should be resolved and the difficulties encountered in this process. Within the qualitative research framework, the data obtained was analysed via descriptive analysis, content analysis and constant comparison method. The findings illustrate that professional development of the teachers is largely unsystematic and varies from one school to another. The implications of the interviews are that the number, accessibility and quality of the inservice trainings should be enhanced.Öğe Testing the mediating role of phubbing in the relationship between the big five personality traits and satisfaction with life(Springer, 2022) Çıkrıkçı, Özkan; Griffiths, Mark D.; Erzen, EvrenPhubbing refers to an individual giving more attention to their mobile phone when in face-to-face communication with another individual. Research in the area of phubbing is relatively new and is often related to habitual mobile phone use. The aim of the present study was to explore the relationships between phubbing, the Big Five personality traits, and life satisfaction. The mediating role of phubbing in the relationship between personality traits and life satisfaction was also investigated. The sample comprised 292 university students (192 females [65.8%] and 100 males [34.2%]). The age of the university students in the study group ranged from 17 to 28 years and the mean age was 20.05 years (SD = 2.33). Correlation analysis demonstrated that there were significant relationships between life satisfaction, phubbing, communication disturbances, and neuroticism. Phubbing was shown to have a non-significant relationship with life satisfaction. The study also examined the mediating role of communication disturbances in the relationship between neuroticism and life satisfaction. Neuroticism was shown to have a significant effect on communication disturbances, and communication disturbances had a significant effect on life satisfaction. Consequently, communication disturbances had a mediating role in the relationship between neuroticism and life satisfaction.Öğe The effect of anxiety on student achievement(Springer International Publishing, 2017) Erzen, EvrenThe effect of anxiety on student achievement was examined in this meta-analysis study. Of the moderators identified, such as the publication type, year of publication, sample group/sector, leadership style/approach, leadership scale and organizational justice scale, it was found that the publication type, leadership style/approach, leadership scale and organizational justice scale were moderating variables.Öğe Üç boyutlu bağlanma stilleri ölçeği(İnönü Üniversitesi, 2016) Erzen, EvrenBu çalışmanın amacı, bağlanma stillerinin belirlenmesinde alternatif bir ölçme aracının geliştirilmesidir. Güvenilirlik analizi sonucunda ise kaçınan, güvenli ve kaygılı-kararsız bağlanma stilleri için belirlenen Cronbach Alpha iç tutarlılık katsayıları .80, .69 ve .71 değerleri bulunmuşturÖğe The virtual world's current addiction: Phubbing(Turkish Green Crescent Soc, 2016) Karadağ, Engin; Tosuntaş, Şule Betül; Erzen, Evren; Duru, Pınar; Bostan, Nalan; Şahin, Berrak Mızrak; Culha, İlkay; Babadağ, BurcuThe aim of this work is to analyze both the reasons that young adults exhibit phubbing behaviors and the effects of these behaviors on their lives. Following a qualitative research approach, this study has been designed using a case study method. Selected using the criterion sampling method, participants consisted of a total of 9 university students studying in a School of Education in Turkey. The criterion used to include individuals into the sample group was 'using a smartphone instead of actively participating in an on-going discussion being had by one's surrounding peers' as well as a high score on the Phubbing Scale form. Data were obtained using a semi-structured interview form composed of 18 open-ended questions. Both a descriptive and content analysis were used to evaluate the data. The study's findings revealed that not only did smartphones negatively affect interpersonal relations, but also that phubbers lacked communication skills, experienced difficulty establishing and maintaining eye contact while using a smartphone, and misunderstood what was being discussed. Some participants even stated that they would become completely disconnected from the social environment while using a smartphone. It is argued in the discussion section that since smartphones have all the same features and abilities as traditional computers, they carry the same potential addictions as computers. Yet, instead of being restricted to a table, these addictions are now able to manifest in every aspect, environment, and moment of one's life. As such, since phubbing carries with it a type of addiction that is much more devious and pervasion than most previous virtual reality related addictions, it is recommended that further research be conducted before serious psychopathological and sociological problems begin to manifest themselves throughout the population.
