    The effects of bichronous professional development on teachers: Perceived barriers to teach online

    This qualitative, multicase study examined the perceived effect on teachers of an online professional development (PD) program supported by facilitators who provided extensive feedback to them. Our goal was to identify the barriers to teachers implementing their learning in their diverse contexts. Using inductive and deductive thematic analysis and cross-case analysis of interviews and reflections, we found that positive results are much more likely if the design of PD is contextual and facilitation is in place. However, for this external PD to be effective, barriers to implementation, such as administration or support, school policies, and context need to be considered. The nature of PD does not guarantee the implementation of what was learned in the classroom. Suggestions for improvements in terms of PD design and barriers are also discussed.

    Faculty development to design effective online courses: Responding to requirements

    Since the pandemic, the importance of faculty development has been taken much more attention and has gone from being an ‘expectation’ to a ‘requirement’.Therefore,universitieshavestartedtosteptowardfacultydevelopment, which is also necessary. A wide variety of professional learning activities has been used for faculty development purposes in universities, but the research examining its effectiveness is limited. Our goal is to investigate the experiences of faculty from diverse backgrounds regarding technology-based, high-quality professional development programs in terms of their effectiveness. The faculty working at a foundation university participated in high-quality professional development programmes implemented in this study. The data were collected through focus group interviews. Using a qualitative methodology, we have found that faculty improved their knowledge and skills in designing and teaching online courses, with some faculty even reporting active use of what they have learned in their class and finding it valuable and effective. Program features such as feedback, facilitation, and best examples are helpful for having faculty grow pedagogically. The faculty has demonstrated that they can participate in learning activities that are meaningful to them in their daily lives. For the professional development programmes designed for the faculty to be effective in future studies, it is recommended that the programmes should be designed in a meaningful way for the faculty.

    A new alternative quantile regression model for the bounded response with educational measurements applications of OECD countries

    This article introduces a new distribution with two tuning parameters specified on the unit interval. It follows from a ‘hyperbolic secant transformation’ of a random variable following the Weibull distribution. The lack of research on the prospect of hyperbolic transformations providing flexible distributions over the unit interval is a motivation for the study. The main distributional structural properties of the new distribution are established. The different estimation methods and two simulation works have been derived for model parameters. Subsequently, we develop a related quantile regression model for further statistical perspectives. We consider two real data applications based on the educational measurements of both OECD and some non-members of OECD countries. Our regression model aims to relate the desire to get top grades on certain young students in the OECD countries with some of their Education and School Life Index such as reading performance, work environment at home, and paid work experience. It is shown that the elaborated quantile regression model has a better fitting power than famous regression models when the unit response variable possesses skewed distribution as well as two independent variables are significant in the statistical sense at any standard significance level for the median response.

    Öğretmen adaylarının topluma hizmet uygulamaları dersine ilişkin görüşleri üzerine bir inceleme

    Bu araştırmanın amacı öğretmen adaylarının Topluma Hizmet Uygulamaları (THU) dersine ilişkin görüşlerini ortaya koyarak, onların bakış açısından uygulama sürecine ilişkin sorunları tespitetmek ve çözüm önerileri sunmaktır. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımlarından durum çalışması desenininbenimsendiği bu araştırmada veriler bir devlet üniversitesinde ilgili dönemde THU dersini alansınıf öğretmenliği programında öğrenim gören öğretmen adaylarından elde edilmiştir.Araştırmanın bulguları öğretmen adaylarının genel olarak THU dersinin amaç ve içeriğini doğru algıladıklarını göstermektedir. Ayrıca araştırma öğretmen adaylarının THU dersinin kendilerine toplumsal duyarlılık, farkındalık ve sosyal sorumluluk bağlamında önemli kazanımlar sağladığını düşündüklerini de göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte öğretmen adayları dersin planlama, uygulama ve değerlendirmesine ilişkin bir takım sorunlar yaşandığını da düşündükleri tespit edilmiştir.

Kuramsal bilgi, pek çok yönden uygulamaya hizmet eder, ona bakış açısı ve öngörü kazandırır, olasılıkların değerlendirilmesinde yardımcı olur. Öğretmenlik mesleğinin kuramsal temeli, sağlam bir yapıda olmalı ve öğretmenler, öğretim sürecinde, her türlü etkinliği kuramsal bir bilgi temeline dayandırmalıdırlar.

    On the arcsecant hyperbolic normal distribution. Properties, quantile regression modeling and applications

    This work proposes a new distribution defined on the unit interval. It is obtained by a novel transformation of a normal random variable involving the hyperbolic secant function and its inverse. The use of such a function in distribution theory has not received much attention in the literature, and may be of interest for theoretical and practical purposes. Basic statistical properties of the newly defined distribution are derived, including moments, skewness, kurtosis and order statistics. For the related model, the parametric estimation is examined through different methods. We assess the performance of the obtained estimates by two complementary simulation studies. Also, the quantile regression model based on the proposed distribution is introduced. Applications to three real datasets show that the proposed models are quite competitive in comparison to well-established models.

    Topluma hizmet uygulamalarının öğretmen adaylarının değer kazanımlarına etkisi

    Bu araştırmanın amacı, topluma hizmet uygulamalarının öğretmen adaylarının değer kazanımlarına etkisini incelemektir. Araştırmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden ön test-son test kontrol gruplu deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Topluma Hizmet Uygulamaları (THU) dersini alan 3. Sınıf öğretmen adayları oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak Schwartz ve arkadaşları (2001) tarafından geliştirilen ve Demirutku ve Sümer (2010) tarafından Türkçe’ye uyarlanıp geçerlilik güvenirlik çalışması yapılan Portre Değerler Anketi (PDA) kullanılmıştır. Verilerin çözümlenmesinde bağımsız gruplar için t testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre uygulama öncesi deney grubu ile kontrol grubunun sahip oldukları değer yönelimleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark yokken, uygulama sonrasında deney grubu ile kontrol grubunun değer kazanma düzeyleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur. Bu fark deney grubunun lehinedir. Araştırmanın sonucunda doğrudan değer kazandırmaya yönelik projelerinin öğretmen adaylarına değer kazandırdığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bu projeler sayesinde öğretmen adaylarının sorumluluk, sabır, sevgi, saygı, yardımseverlik ve merhametlilik gibi değerlerinde olumlu değişiklikler olmuştur.

    Transmuted unit rayleigh quantile regression model: alternative to beta and kumaraswamy quantile regression models

    In this paper, a new alternative unit distribution is presented. It consists of applying the quadratic transmutation scheme with the unit Rayleigh distribution. The quantile regression model of the proposed distribution is developed, as well as the maximum likelihood estimation of the unknown regression model parameters. We consider a real data application that links a measure of the educational attainment of OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries with some of their Better Life Index such as life satisfaction, homicide rate, and voter turnout. It is shown that the proposed quantile regression model provides a better fit than well-known regression models in the literature when the unit response variable has skewed observations and outliers.

    Türkiye'de medya okuryazarlığı üzerine bir değerlendirme

    Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye'de medya okuryazarlığı konusunun çalışıldığı makalelerin içerik analizini yapmak ve bu yolla medya okuryazarlığı konusunun nasıl ele alındığını ortaya koymaktır. İnternet üzerinden tam metin olarak ulaşılabilen toplam 66 makalenin içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Makaleler içerik analizi yapılarak, makalelerin yılları, konu alanları, yöntemi, veri toplama araçları, örneklemi, veri analiz yöntemi boyutlarını kapsayacak şekilde incelenmiştir. Elde edilen veriler, yüzde ve frekansa dayalı bir şekilde yorumlanıp tablolaştırılarak sunulmuştur. Elde edilen verilere dayalı olarak en fazla yayının 2013 yılında yapıldığı tespit edilmiştir. En fazla çalışılan konuların ülkelerdeki uygulamaların incelenmesi ve disiplinler arası çalışmalar olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Nitel ve derlemeye dayalı araştırmaların en fazla yayın olarak tespit edildiği çalışmada daha çok doküman incelemesinin veri toplama aracı olarak kullanıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Örneklem düzeyi olarak ilköğretim öğrencileri ve 101-300 kişilik bir örneklem aralığında çalışmaların yoğunlaştığı görülmüştür. Verilerin analizinde ise daha çok betimsel analizlerin yapıldığı, frekans yüzde dağılımlarının çalışmalarda yoğun bir şekilde kullanıldığı tespit edilmiştir

    The unit folded normal distribution: a new unit probability distribution with the estimation procedures, quantile regression modeling and educational attainment applications

    In this paper, we develop a continuous distribution on the unit interval characterized by the distribution of the absolute hyperbolic tangent transformation of a random variable following the normal distribution. The lack of research on the prospect of hyperbolic transformations providing flexible distributions on the unit interval is a motivation for the study. First, we study it theoretically and discuss its properties of interest from a modeling point of view. In particular, it is shown that the proposed distribution accommodates various levels of skewness and kurtosis. Then, some statistical work is performed. We investigate diverse estimation methods for the involved parameters and evaluate their performance through two simulation studies. Subsequently, the quantile regression model derived from the proposed distribution is developed. Two real-world data applications of interest are provided. The first application is about the univariate modeling of the percentage of the educational attainment of some countries, which is one indicator of the education topic of the Better Life Index (BLI) of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. The second application is to explain the relationship between the percentage of educational attainment of some countries with one indicator of the work-life balance, safety, and health topics of BLI via median quantile regression modeling. For the considered data sets, the proposed distribution and quantile regression models show that they have better modeling abilities than competitive models under some comparison criteria. The results also indicate that covariates are (statistically) significant at any ordinary level of significance for the median response.

    The unit log-log distribution: a new unit distribution with alternative quantile regression modeling and educational measurements applications

    In this paper, we propose a new distribution, named unit log-log distribution, defined on the bounded (0,1) interval. Basic distributional properties such as model shapes, stochastic ordering, quantile function, moments, and order statistics of the newly defined unit distribution are studied. The maximum likelihood estimation method has been pointed out to estimate its model parameters. The new quantile regression model based on the proposed distribution is introduced and it has been derived estimations of its model parameters also. The Monte Carlo simulation studies have been given to see the performance of the estimation method based on the new unit distribution and its regression modeling. Applications of the newly defined distribution and its quantile regression model to real data sets show that the proposed models have better modeling abilities than competitive models. The proposed unit quantile regression model has targeted to explain linear relation between educational measurements of both OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries and some non-members of OECD countries, and their Better Life Index. The existence of the significant covariates has been seen on the real data applications for the unit median response. Keywords

    The views of secondary school mathemetics teachers on their distance education experıences: the case of Turkey

    Distance learning process was initiated by the Ministry of National Education to allow equal opportunity and to improve accessibility, and the teachers provided online courses, exams or material. In the present study, conducted to determine the views of mathematics teachers, who are among the stakeholders in the process, on their experiences in online instruction of the mathematics course in secondary schools, phenomenology approach, a qualitative research method, was employed. The findings of the present study conducted with 105 secondary school mathematics teachers employed in seven regions in Turkey demonstrated that the middle school mathematics teachers considered distance education an obligation to continue mathematics courses and to maintain the communication with their students. It was also observed that the teachers believed that it would be difficult to instruct the mathematics course online due to its nature. It was determined that the predominant view argued that distance education allowed instruction of the course independent of the time and the place, and hence an advantage of the process, but the teachers also stated that distance education had certain cognitive, affective, technical and social disadvantages. The teachers complained that technical problems such as internet access and lack of tablets led to a difficult process.

    Yenilenmiş bloom taksonomisine göre analiz örneği: 2017 taslak ortaöğretim kimya dersi öğretim programı

    Bu çalışmanın amacı T.C. Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı Ortaöğretim Genel Müdürlüğü tarafından yayınlanan 2017 yılı Taslak Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı'nda yer alan kazanımların yenilenmiş Bloom taksonomisinin bilgi ve bilişsel süreç boyut basamaklarına göre hangi basamaklarda olduklarını tespit etmektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda çalışma, nitel araştırma metodolojisi içerisinde yer alan doküman incelemesi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Taslak Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim programında yer alan 129 kazanım betimsel analiz kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Verilerin analizinde güvenirlik hesaplamaları yapılmış ve güvenirlik katsayıları .70’den büyük bulunmuştur. Analiz bulgularına göre 2017 Taslak Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı kazanımlarının bilgi boyutlarına homojen olarak dağılmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Bilgi boyutunda; en çok kavramsal bilgi düzeyinde kazanıma, en az ise üstbilişsel bilgi düzeyinde kazanıma yer verildiği belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca kazanımların genel olarak bilişsel süreç boyutu basamaklarına da homojen olarak dağılmadığı belirlenmiştir. Bilişsel süreç boyutunda; en çok anlama düzeyinde kazanıma, en az ise değerlendirme düzeyinde kazanıma yer verildiği belirlenmiştir. Taslak Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı kazanımlarında üst düzey bilişsel süreç boyutlarına ve öğrenci öğrenmelerini aktif kılıcı üst düzey bilgi boyutuyla ilgi kazanımlara yeteri kadar yer verilmediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır
