Therapeutic uses of the medicinal plants growing in the villages of Yakutiye district, Erzurum, Türkiye

dc.description.abstractIntroduction: This research was conducted to document the usage of medicinal plants and methods of preparation by the local people of Yakutiye district in Erzurum, Türkiye. Methods: Information about the ethnobotanical usage of plant taxa were obtained through face-to-face interviews with local people in the Yakutiye district and recorded with a questionnaire form between 2019–2020 years. A total of 185 informants (72 males and 113 women) participated to the study for collecting ethnomedicinal data. Plant samples were prepared and deposited at Herbarium of Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Forestry (KATO). Results: At the end of the research, according to the questionnaire form, it was determined which plants were used for the treatment of ailments. Sixty-three plant taxa belonging to 27 families were recorded as folk medicines in the villages of the Yakutiye district. The most commonly used plant taxa for medical purposes by local people are Urtica dioica (6.32%), Rosa canina (5.37%), Rumex crispus (5.01%), Plantago major (4.42%), P. lanceolata (4.18%), and Malva neglecta (4.06%). Local people mostly used plants for the treatment of haemorrhoids (13.85%), rheumatism (10.77%), diabetes and stomach ailments (9.23% each), urinary disorders (6.92%), stomachaches (6.15%), gynaecological diseases and wounds (5.38% each), and cold, skin disorders, and gastric ulcers (4.61% each). Discussion/Conclusions: The most popular plant taxa in the area have been used for similar purposes as described in other studies within the Erzurum province and its surroundings. The traditional medicinal plants used in Yakutiye district might help to obtain valuable information for modern medicine.
