| dc.description.abstract | Bu makalede, dil felsefesi alanında merkezi bir öneme sahip olan “denotation” ve “reference” kavramları arasındaki ayrım ele alınmakta ve bu ayrımın felsefi kökenleri tartışılmaktadır. Türkçeye her iki terimin “gönderim” olarak çevrilmesi, söz konusu terimler aralarındaki semantik farklılığın göz ardı edilmesine yol açmaktadır. Makalede, öncelikle Bertrand Russell’ın erken dönem gönderim teorisi üzerinden niceleyicilerin gönderim problemi açıklanacak ardından Russell’ın özel ad ve belirli betimleme ayrımına yer verilecektir. Bir sonraki bölümde gönderimi bulunmayan ifadeler içeren cümlelerin doğruluk-değeri problemi; Frege, Russell ve Strawson’un görüşleri üzerinden tartışmaya açılacaktır. Ardından, Keith Donnellan’ın belirli betimlemelerin niteliksel ve gönderimsel kullanımlarını ayırdığı yaklaşım merkeze alınacak ve bu ayrımın “denotation” ve “reference” kavramları arasındaki farkı daha da belirgin kıldığı gösterilecektir. Sonuç olarak, makale Türkçede yaygın biçimde her iki kavram için de “gönderim” terimi kullanılmasının, İngilizcedeki ayrımı yansıtmadığını; bu nedenle “reference” için “gönderim”, “denotation” için ise “gösterim” terimlerinin kullanılmasının daha doğru olacağı tezini savunmaktadır. Böylece makale, söz konusu iki terim arasındaki ayrımın Türkçe terminolojiye de taşınmasının gerekliliğini vurgulamaktadır. | |
| dc.description.abstract | In this article, the distinction between the concepts of “denotation” and “reference,” which hold a central place in the philosophy of language, is examined and the philosophical roots of this distinction are discussed. Translating both terms as “gönderim” into Turkish leads to the neglect of the semantic difference between them. The article first addresses the problem of the reference of quantifiers through Bertrand Russell’s early theory of denoting, and then presents Russell’s distinction between a proper name and a definite description. In the following section, the truth-value problem of sentences containing non-referring expressions is discussed in light of the views of Frege, Russell, and Strawson. Subsequently, Keith Donnellan’s approach, which differentiates between the attributive and referential uses of definite descriptions, is taken as a focal point, and it is demonstrated how this distinction further clarifies the difference between “denotation” and “reference”. In conclusion, the article argues that the common practice of translating both terms into Turkish as “gönderim” does not reflect the distinction present in English; therefore, it is more appropriate to use “gönderim” for “reference” and to introduce “gösterim” as the Turkish equivalent for “denotation”. In this way, the article emphasizes the necessity of incorporating this conceptual distinction into Turkish terminology. | |
