What are the roles of personality, family, and school in the non-suicidal self-injury behaviors among adolescents?

Özet
This study examines significant factors that contribute to the non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents including personality, family, and school. Based on the correlation design, this study consisted of 648 adolescents studying at high school. Of these students, 330 were found to have displayed non-suicidal self-injury, and analyses were performed using the data collected from these students. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Results indicated that demographic variables as well as personality traits, parental relationships, and school climate had a significant relationship with non-suicidal self-injury. Moreover, the predictor model explained 26% of the variance in the non-suicidal self-injury. This study provides results that will make it easier to understand adolescents’ self-harming behaviors from many aspects.
