This study examines classical educational institutions that operated in the district of Balıkesir from the late 17th century to the mid-19th century using data derived from hurufat registers. It analyzes the administrative structures, personnel profiles, and waqf-based financial mechanisms of madrasas, darülkurras, muallimhanes, and mekteps, and evaluates their roles within the local educational net- work. Records concerning appointments, dismissals, salary allocations, and berat renewals reveal the institutional continuity of provincial education and the central role of waqf structures in sustaining these institutions. The findings indicate that institutional density increased significantly during the 18th century, largely driven by the restoration of existing structures and new constructions. The findings also demonstrate that muallimhanes and mektebs formed the core of the educational system. The study contributes to the understanding of Balıkesir’s classical educational system by highlighting its socio-eco- nomic and administrative characteristics, and emphasizes the significance of hurufat registers as key archival sources for the study of Ottoman provincial education.
