| dc.description.abstract | The Artvin region is rich with underground mines and this value was known during the period of Ottoman rule. Copper mine is one of the abundant mines in this geography. In the Murgul Valley, where copper mining is still carried out today, production started with the construction of a large plant at the beginning of the 20th century. Caucasian Copper Company, a British-American joint venture company, has wanted to maximize its profitability by using the most advanced machinery of the period since it started production.. The company also carried out road construction works in this challenging geography in order to achieve its goal. The company improved the surrounding area and constructed buildings such as hospitals and schools. The company employed Turkish, Iranian, Georgian, Armenian and Greek workers. More than half of these workers were Ottoman subjects. The fatal accidents experienced by expatriate workers in the mining company were the subject of correspondence of the Ottoman Empire due to their nationality. In this study, the activities of the Caucasian Copper Company in the Murgul Valley and the occupational accidents experienced by the Ottoman citizens were analyzed using the sources of the period and Ottoman archive documents. | |
| dc.description.abstract | Artvin bölgesi yer altı madenleri bakımından zengin olup Osmanlı hâkimiyetinde olduğu dönemde de bu değeri bilinmekteydi. Bakır madeni bu coğrafyada bol miktarda bulunan madenlerden biridir. Günümüzde de bakır işletmeciliği yapılan Murgul Vadisi’nde 20. yüzyıl başında büyük bir tesisin inşa edilmesi ile üretime başlanmıştır. İngiliz Amerikan ortak sermayeli bir şirket olan Kafkas Bakır Kumpanyası, üretime başladığı dönemden itibaren zamanın en gelişkin makinelerini kullanarak kârlılığını azami düzeye çıkarmak istemiştir. Yine hedefine ulaşmak maksadıyla bu zorlu coğrafyada yol yapım işleri gerçekleştirmiş, tesisin etrafını bayındır hâle getirip hastane, okul gibi binalar inşa etmiştir. Şirkette Türk, İranlı, Gürcü, Ermeni ve Rum işçiler çalışmaktaydı. Bu işçilerin yarıdan fazlası Osmanlı tebaası amelelerdi. Gurbetçi olarak şirkette çalışan işçilerin maden şirketinde yaşadığı ölümlü kazalar tabiiyetleri sebebiyle Osmanlı Devleti’nin yazışmalarına konu olmuştur. Bu çalışmada Kafkas Bakır Kumpanyası’nın Murgul Vadisi’nde gerçekleştirdiği faaliyetler ile Osmanlı tebaası işçilerin yaşadığı iş kazaları dönemin kaynakları ve Osmanlı Arşiv belgeleri kullanılarak incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. | |
