dc.description.abstractDuring the Tanzimat Period, there were changes in the legal status of Christians in the Ottoman society. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of the changes that occurred during the Tanzimat Period on Christian Armenians in Adana. While the Christian sects recognized by the Ottoman Empire until the Tanzimat period were Orthodoxy and Gregorianism, Catholicism and Protestantism were also recognized during this period and members of these sects were given the right to represent and govern themselves. The recognition of new sects by the state caused political, social and economic conflicts between Armenian communities belonging to different sects in Adana. Adana, as a city that deeply felt the effects of Ottoman modernization, was a city where these conflicts intensified. In the study, the reasons why Armenians changed their sect and what kind of struggles these changes caused among Armenian communities were examined. The importance of the study is that it deals with what happened among the Christian Armenian communities in Adana in order to understand the change in Ottoman society. Archival documents, and literature of the period are the sources of the study. As a result, it has been determined that sectarian changes caused serious political and social struggles among the Armenian communities in Adana.
