Özet

This study aims to examine preschool children's views on fire. The phenomenology method used in the qualitative research approach was utilized in the study. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 12 preschool children studying in a primary school in the district of Rize in the province of Güneysu in the second semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. The 11-question “Fire Interview Form” created by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. As a result of the research, it was determined that preschool children mostly created metaphors of burning event and color for the concept of fire. It was determined that children generally expressed the feeling of fire with negative emotions. In case of a fire, it was revealed that children mostly focused on the spread of fire and the emergency situation that may occur. Children stated children mostly focused on the spread of fire and the emergency situation that may occur. Children stated that the fire was usually caused by kitchen utensils and flammable materials. Participants stated that fire can occur in closed areas such as homes and schools as well as in open areas such as forests. Most of the preschool children thought that living beings could be harmed in case of a fire. All of the children stated that the fire department should be called in case of a fire and almost all of them knew the number of the fire department correctly. While preschool children gave opinions under various themes such as extinguishing, evacuation, precautions and calling to stay safe in case of fire, most of the sources of information about fire were family and teachers. It was found that most of the participants had knowledge about the function and operation of the fire escape ladder and the fire alarm button. Finally, it was determined that the majority of the children had seen fires before and these fires were mostly at home, news and school. As a result of the study, suggestions were made to increase the awareness and knowledge levels of students about the concept of fire and for future studies to be conducted by researchers on the concept of fire.
