Since 2013, the level of Turkish democracy has steadily declined (Çınar 2023, pp. 505–514). The power struggle within the state apparatus, the further victimization of large segments of society in terms of basic human rights practices, and the deepening social crisis led Turkey to move further away from the modern world. On 15 July 2016, Turkish politics witnessed a failed coup attempt by a religious group (Fettullahists) organized within the military (Duman 2016, pp. 103–118). In the period following July 15, state and social life changed radically.
